"Everyone Feared Me. Then My Maid Climbed Into My Bed." Chapter 9
EIGHT YEARS AT THE DOOR
Daniel Carter lowered the envelope.
"All right," he said.
It was such a small response to eight years that I understood why Emma's face hardened.
Her mother looked between them.
"Daniel?"
He turned toward her.
"Yes, Margaret."
Recognition brightened her face, then faltered.
"You're from the office."
"I used to be."
"There's a report missing."
He closed his eyes briefly.
"I know."
Emma stepped into the room.
"Why are you here?"
"I wanted to see your mother."
"You had eight years."
"Yes."
"You left a note saying a week."
"I know."
"Stop saying that."
Her voice rose enough that Margaret looked worried. Emma immediately lowered it.
"Tell me something I don't already know."
Daniel glanced at me, then at Luke.
"You're Danny Moretti."
"Apparently everyone has found time to identify me. Answer your daughter."
He nodded and put the envelope on the small table.
"Northstar's accounts were being altered. Equipment invoices, contractor payments, money moved through companies that didn't provide anything. When the investigation started, the signatures made it look like I arranged it."
Emma folded her arms.
"Did you?"
"I approved things I should have examined. I trusted people because I didn't want to admit the business was beyond what I could manage alone. I didn't organize the fraud. That doesn't mean I was innocent of every failure."
Luke stood beside the door, listening.
"Who threatened you?"
"A contractor who worked with Maribel Ortiz. She handled supplier accounts. He showed me photographs of my wife and daughter outside their building. Told me what would happen if I spoke."
Emma's face went pale.
"So you left us in that building."
Daniel looked down.
"I thought if I disappeared, they wouldn't need to do anything to you. I thought I could find records that cleared the case, get someone trustworthy to listen, then come back."
"In a week."
"That's what I told myself."
"And after the week?"
He took a long breath.
"I was afraid. Then ashamed. Then I let those become reasons to stay away."
The answer lacked the heroism men often added to their worst decisions. I respected that much, though it didn't make Emma's hands stop shaking.
"I sent letters," he said. "And money through an old company contact. I found out later neither reached you."
"You could have called."
"Yes."
"You could have come home."
"Yes."
"You could have let me decide whether I was frightened enough to forgive you."
He looked at her.
"Yes."
Margaret reached for Emma's hand. Emma sat beside her immediately, anger giving way to the practiced gentleness of someone who had done that movement hundreds of times.
"Is he bothering you?" Margaret asked.
Emma swallowed.
"We're talking, Mom."
"Then he should sit. Guests shouldn't stand in doorways."
Daniel sat on the edge of a chair. He looked older once he wasn't holding himself upright.
Luke pointed toward the envelope.

"What's in there?"
"Copies of transfer records. Names of the accounts that received the money. Some of what I recovered over the years. The originals that matter most are elsewhere."
"The estate," I said.
Daniel nodded.
"In a service cabinet. Behind the third-floor maintenance panel. We installed the original controller there. When I first realized the accounts didn't match, I hid copies during a service visit."
"Why my house?"
"It was secure, and the contractor had already searched our office. I intended to retrieve them the next week."
Emma looked up.
"Everything was the next week with you."
He accepted it without answering.
"You entered my house," I said.
"Twice recently. Once before that, when I learned Emma was working there."
"Was the phone call yours?"
His face tightened.
"Yes. I wanted to know whether the old controller was still connected. I didn't know how to speak to her."
"So you pretended to be from an agency," Emma said.
"Yes."
"Even then, you could have told me."
"I could have."
Luke asked about the camera interruption.
"The old maintenance relay briefly disables that corridor feed during a diagnostic reset," Daniel said. "I used it. The credential was still active."
"Not anymore," Luke replied.
"Good. It should have been removed years ago."
"And my bedroom?" I asked.
Daniel looked toward Emma.
"That wasn't me."
Luke raised a hand before I responded.
"We have a man on the corridor camera entering through the service route. We don't have him at the bedroom. The controller reused the contractor account across several terminals."
"Maribel had the same information," Daniel said. "She kept old customer credentials when Northstar was sold. She's been using my profile."
"How do you know?"
"I followed her. I found her at this facility last year while trying to trace the company contact who handled my letters. Then I discovered Margaret was here."
Emma stared at him.
"Last year?"
His shoulders lowered.
"I didn't know how to face you."
"You keep saying you were trying to find us. You found us."
"You're right."
The admission made the silence harder, not easier.
Margaret began humming, turning toward the window. Emma adjusted the cardigan around her mother's shoulders before asking the next question.
"Why did Maribel come to Danny's house?"
"She was looking for the service cabinet key. She knew records had been hidden somewhere, but the compartment has a separate lock. I believe she thought your mother had kept it, or given it to you."
I remembered the pendant.
"Her necklace?"
Daniel looked surprised.
"Margaret used to keep a small emergency key on the chain when she worked late. Not the cabinet key. Maribel remembered the habit."
Emma pulled the pendant from beneath her collar.
"There isn't a key on this."
"No. There hasn't been for years."
The similar necklace in the footage had made a blurred shape look meaningful. Maribel had relied on older information, just as we had.

"What was in the envelope she gave Emma?" Luke asked.
"I didn't see the contents. I saw Maribel leave. Emma was sitting in the hallway afterward, half asleep. I took the envelope from the cart beside her. It had instructions asking her to bring any company keys or papers her mother still had. There was a blank return envelope inside."
Emma stared at him.
"You were that close to me."
"Yes."
"And you took something instead of saying my name."
Daniel's eyes filled.
"Yes."
I knew men who would have defended themselves until everyone in the room was exhausted. His refusal to defend himself didn't repair what he had done, but it gave Emma something solid to be angry at.
"Where is it?" Luke asked.
"In my bag. I'll give it to you."
"The warning note?"
"Not mine."
I looked at Emma.
She looked back. Neither of us needed to say who benefited from making her leave my house.
Luke stepped into the corridor to make a call. Daniel took an old key from his coat and placed it on the table.
Blue paint marked its edge.
"I dropped the duplicate near the staircase tonight," he said. "Someone moved in the hall. I panicked and left before opening the cabinet."
"What brought you here?" I asked.
"Maribel was packing records into her car. I followed her from the estate area. I thought she might have got what she wanted from Emma, or come for something Margaret remembered."
"She hasn't," Emma said immediately.
"I know that now."
Margaret turned toward him again.
"Daniel."
He leaned forward.
For a moment, she looked at him with full recognition.
"You're late."
His face crumpled.
"I am."
She considered that, then looked at Emma.
"Your father came home. Make tea."
Emma laughed once, and the sound broke into tears.
I moved closer while she bent over her mother's hand. I didn't touch her until she reached toward me.
When she did, I took her fingers and stayed.
Luke returned several minutes later. His expression had changed.
"Maribel was in the rear office, not off the property. Staff found her collecting an old document case. Police are on their way."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Our men haven't searched her things," Luke continued. "Rosa has secured the office. Maribel admitted she sent Emma the note, said she was trying to protect Margaret from us. Her badge and the visitor footage will make that explanation difficult."
Emma looked at the table.
"And the records in the cabinet?"
"Security found the compartment," Luke said. "We'll open it with witnesses and preserve what's inside. The police will compare it with what your father brought."
There would be statements, verification, and questions we couldn't answer that night. I was grateful he didn't pretend otherwise.
Emma looked at Daniel.
"Will you disappear again?"
"No. I'll give them everything. If you don't want to see me afterward, I'll accept that. But you'll know where I am."
"I don't know what I want."
"I understand."
"I don't think you do yet."
He nodded slowly.
"Then I'll listen until I do."
A staff member brought fresh tea. Emma poured her mother's cup first. She let Daniel remain in the chair, but didn't offer him reassurance with it.
I moved toward the doorway. This was a family wound, and I had no right to decide I belonged beside it.
Emma stopped me.
"You can stay."
"If you want me to."
She looked tired, tearful, and completely certain about this one thing.
"I do."
I stayed through the tea and the first police questions. I stayed while she told her father she would need time. I stayed until Margaret fell asleep and Emma finally put on her coat.
In the car, she took my hand without waiting for me to offer it.
"The night you investigated me," she said quietly, "I wasn't only angry because you'd looked into my life."
I turned toward her.
"I was angry because I'd started caring what you thought of me."
The rain slid down the window behind her.
For once, I had no reason to hide what her words meant to me.
"I care too," I said.
She leaned closer until her shoulder rested against mine.
I held her hand all the way home.
