"I Hid Beneath a Mafia Boss's Desk. He Refused to Give Me Back." Chapter 3
YOUR FATHER SAVED MY LIFE
Alexander called a doctor from the intercom beside his desk. Then he brought me water and sat in an armchair across from the sofa, leaving the space between us clear.
"Is there someone you'd like to call?"
I thought of my mother, dead two years. Of friends whose numbers I could no longer remember because Derek had replaced my phone and organized my contacts for me.
"No one," I said.
He didn't tell me that couldn't be true. "All right. We can think about that later."
I held the glass with both hands. My green dress had a tear near the knee, and one strap had slipped down my arm. I pulled the blanket over myself.
"He'll tell everyone I went home with you."
"You didn't. You're in an office with two security cameras outside it and a doctor on her way."
"That won't stop him saying it."
Alexander considered that. "No. It probably won't."
His honesty was oddly comforting. Derek always promised things would be fine, usually while arranging the reason they wouldn't be.
The doctor arrived carrying a worn leather bag. She introduced herself as Helena Price and asked whether Alexander should leave.
I looked at the door. "Could he stay?"
"Of course."
She pulled a chair close, washed her hands in the adjoining bathroom, and examined my heel. A small piece of glass had lodged beneath the skin. I gripped the blanket as she removed it.
"Nearly done," she said. "You can tell me to stop."
When she reached for my wrist, I flinched. She paused with her hand in the air.
"May I look?"
I nodded.
She turned my arm carefully. Red marks lay beneath the bracelet Derek had bought me for our anniversary.
"How long has this been happening?"
"I don't know."
She waited without making my answer seem foolish.
"Three years," I whispered. "It wasn't always like this."
"Do you want to tell me about tonight?"
I described the corridor. Halfway through, I heard myself explaining that Derek had been stressed about work.
Dr. Price looked up. "You don't need to explain his work to me. I'm asking about your wrist."
My throat closed.
"Has he ever put his hands around your neck?"
"Once."
Alexander, standing near the window now, turned. I couldn't look at him.
She asked when it had happened, whether I had trouble breathing afterward, and whether I was in pain now. Her questions were practical. I didn't have to make my marriage sound better or worse than it had been.
When she asked to document the injuries, I glanced at Alexander.
"It's your decision," he said.
I said yes.
Afterward, she gave me her card and the number of a woman named Sarah who could help me make arrangements beyond this room.
"For tonight," she said, "eat something, rest that foot, and call if anything worries you."

Marco returned with slippers and a paper bag from a hotel shop. The slippers were too large.
I looked down at them. "Do you usually keep these in your office?"
"No," Alexander said.
"They were the only size," Marco added, sounding so offended by the shop's inventory that a laugh escaped me.
It was tiny, almost painful. Both men pretended not to notice.
Marco set down soup and bread before leaving.
"There's a guest suite upstairs," Alexander said. "You can stay tonight."
"Did you hurt Derek?"
"No."
Relief came first. Then shame, because some part of me had wanted someone to make him afraid.
"He's outside the building," Alexander continued. "He won't be allowed back in tonight."
I ate a little soup. He answered a message, put his phone facedown, and waited until I set the spoon aside.
"Why are you doing this?"
His eyes moved toward the cabinet beside the window.
"Because someone once did it for me."
He took out a worn wallet and withdrew a photograph. Before handing it over, he held it for a moment between his fingers.
My father stood outside a brick building with his arm around a blond teenage boy. The boy was unsmiling, thin in the face, and unmistakably Alexander despite the different hair color.
"It darkened when I got older," he said when I glanced from the photograph to him.
I turned it over. My father's handwriting filled the back.
For the boy who deserved better.
"Your father saved my life," Alexander said.
I traced the letters without touching the ink. "How?"
"He worked as an accountant for a transportation company my father owned. He thought it was ordinary work when he took the job. By the time he realized it wasn't, leaving was complicated."
"Your father is Vittorio Moretti?"
He nodded.
I knew that name from newspapers my mother used to fold facedown.
"Daniel found me in a storage room one afternoon. My father had broken my nose. I was fourteen."
Alexander touched the scar near his eyebrow.
"He didn't ask me to stop crying. He sat down and gave me half his sandwich."
I smiled through the tears that had started again. "Turkey and mustard?"
"On rye. Too much mustard."
"He always did that."
For a moment, we shared something small and ordinary. Then Alexander looked down.
"He started bringing extra food. Asked about school. Remembered when I had exams. You don't understand how strange that was to me."
"I think I do."
He raised his eyes, and I knew he understood what I meant.
"When I was fifteen, I overheard something I shouldn't have. My father wanted me involved. Daniel helped me leave. Clothes, money, somewhere to stay in Wisconsin."
I pictured Dad packing a bag for a frightened boy while coming home to make dinner for me.
"Why didn't you stay there?"
"My father found me. Daniel stopped him from bringing me straight back. He had records Vittorio didn't want anyone to see."
"Did he take them to the police?"
"He tried to find someone he could trust."
Alexander looked at the photograph in my hands.
"Later, he was preparing to testify."
The soup settled heavily in my stomach.
"When?"
"The year he died."
I shook my head. Dad had been driving home. Rain, a truck, a terrible accident. I knew the words because I had repeated them whenever anyone asked.
Derek's voice returned so clearly that I almost looked toward the door.
Don't forget what happened to your father.
I gripped the photograph.
"My father died in an accident," I said. "Didn't he?"
