"I Hid Beneath a Mafia Boss's Desk. He Refused to Give Me Back." Chapter 8
OUR FIRST SON
I picked up the key before anyone else could touch it. It was small, with a round head and two shallow teeth.
Lucy rested her hand on my shoulder.
"Do you want to read the letter here?"
I looked at the room where my father had stood so many years earlier.
"Not yet."
Marianne let us sit in her office while I called Rebecca. We photographed where the envelope had been found, recorded the details she asked for, and arranged to bring it to her.
It felt strange doing practical things while holding a message from someone I had spent eleven years missing. I wanted to tear it open and I wanted never to open it, because a sealed letter still contained a voice I hadn't heard yet.
At Rebecca's office, Alexander sat across the room. I had said he could come. I had also asked for space.
He gave me both.
I unfolded the paper.
My dearest Emily,
If you are reading this, something may have happened that I hoped to prevent. First, know that I love you. Not because you are clever or kind or because you have made me proud, though you have. I love you because you are you. There is nothing you could do that would make me stop.
I had to put the letter down.
Lucy handed me a tissue without speaking.
When I could see again, I continued.
Dad explained that he had copied records of crimes committed by Vittorio and people around him. He was trying to put them into trustworthy hands without exposing my mother and me. The material was hidden, and the key would help me reach it.
Then his handwriting changed slightly, the lines less even.
There is something else I need to ask you. If Alexander ever comes to you, please remind him that none of this was his fault. He was a child when I helped him. A frightened child who deserved help. I worry that he will mistake my choices for something he owes me.
Across the room, Alexander lowered his head.
"Did you know about this?" I asked.
"No."
I believed him. It didn't erase what he had concealed, but this grief wasn't something he was arranging for my benefit.
The letter ended with a confession of fear, an apology for waiting to explain, and one line beneath Dad's name.
0417. Where the birds sleep.
I looked at the key.
Not the book. Not a shelf. Something Dad had made with his hands.
"The birdhouse," I said.
When I was six, he had built a blue birdhouse and hung it outside my bedroom window. After he died, Mom took it down because the fixing had loosened. She kept it in the attic.
"Derek put it in storage," I said. "He said I could decide what to do with it later."
He had kept the thing I loved because he thought it wasn't worth examining.

The unit where the watch had been recovered contained boxes from my mother's house. Investigators had inventoried them. With the new description, they found the birdhouse beneath Christmas decorations.
Three days later, I watched Thomas place it on Rebecca's table.
The blue paint was chipped. Dad's little carved bird still sat over the entrance. I remembered complaining that it didn't look like a real bird, and him asking whether I would prefer to make it myself.
Thomas showed me a tiny keyhole under the base.
I turned the key. A panel opened with a soft click.
Inside was a sealed pouch holding a small storage device and an envelope. Thomas handled the device with care and arranged for it to be examined. The envelope contained photographs and another letter.
I lifted the first photograph.
Dad stood in our old kitchen, holding a baby. Mom leaned against his shoulder. The baby had fine fair hair and a white blanket tucked around him.
Alexander rose from his chair.
"That's me."
I stared at him.
"Are you sure?"
"I've seen a copy. Without them in it. My father kept a cropped version."
I turned the photograph over.
April 17, 1991. The day we brought him home.
Beneath the date, in my mother's writing, were three words.
Our first son.
Alexander stepped backward. His face had gone pale in a way I hadn't seen when Derek threatened him, or when I accused him of failing me.
I opened the second letter.
Dad had written that before I was born, he and Mom had cared for Alexander while Vittorio was imprisoned and the baby's mother was dead. They had hoped to adopt him. When Vittorio returned, he regained custody, and their household became quiet again.
Dad didn't claim the letter was a full record. He gave names, dates, and the name of a woman who had known them, so Alexander could find more than a story on a page.
"They had you for almost two years," I whispered.
Alexander sat down as if his legs had failed.
We spent the following days checking what could be checked. Rebecca found surviving records. A former colleague of Mom's remembered visiting them. Alexander spoke to her himself.
When he asked to meet me by the lake, I said yes.
He came alone in a dark coat. For a while we stood without speaking.
"When Daniel found me as a teenager, he told me he had known me when I was little," he said. "I thought he meant through work. He wanted to explain more, but I was angry at anyone who mentioned my childhood. Later he tried again. I kept putting him off."
"He should have told you."
"Maybe. I wish I'd listened."
The wind caught his coat. He looked at the water.
"I remembered a kitchen with yellow curtains. A man who smelled like peppermint. I thought I had invented them."
I took his hand.
"You didn't."
He looked at me, eyes wet.
"And a song. About a little bluebird trying to get home in the rain."
My mother had sung that song beside my bed every night.
I began the first line, barely above a whisper.
Alexander closed his eyes.
When I couldn't finish, he remembered the next one.
