"Mafia Boss, Your Toddler is Here for Child Support!" Chapter 6 — THE 99.9% REALITY

The laboratory courier arrived at Moretti Manor carrying a sealed envelope and the expression of a man delivering a verdict to a king.

Dante met him in the library.

He had not slept. His coffee was cold. His staff had replaced the gallery's damaged controller, cleaned the muddy fountain water, and quietly agreed never to mention the morning's incident unless they wished to lose their jobs.

On the sofa, Lily was conducting a tea party for Mr. Fluffington and a plastic dinosaur named Attorney Steve.

"Attorney Steve says you still owe me money," she told Dante.

"Attorney Steve is negotiating in bad faith."

"He has a law degree."

"He's a dinosaur."

"That doesn't mean he can't read."

Luca turned away before Dante could see him smile.

Dr. Adrian Foster entered behind the courier. He set the envelope on the desk.

"The independent laboratory repeated the analysis using the samples collected last night. The results are conclusive to the stated statistical standard."

Dante did not reach for it.

For four years, he had survived by refusing to hope. Hope had once made him careless. Hope had once persuaded him that Elena would walk through his door and explain everything.

He had been wrong then.

He was terrified of being wrong now.

"Open it," he said.

Dr. Foster unfolded the report.

"The probability of paternity is greater than 99.9 percent. Dante, you are Lily's biological father."

No one moved.

A clock ticked above the fireplace.

Somewhere in the hall, a maid dropped a spoon.

Dante stared at the paper. The black letters blurred. He blinked and tried again.

PATERNITY: CONSISTENT.

PROBABILITY: >99.9%.

He had a daughter.

Three and a half years old.

A daughter who had learned to walk without him. Who had said her first word without him. Who had endured fevers and nightmares and birthdays while he had sat in this mansion convincing himself Elena had abandoned him.

Dante pressed his hand flat against the desk.

"How old?" he asked.

Dr. Foster hesitated. "You know her age."

"Exactly."

"Forty-two months, according to the medical history provided with her identification."

Forty-two months.

He had missed forty-two months.

Lily looked up from her tea party. "Daddy?"

He turned.

She held out a tiny cup. "Want some? It's pretend strawberry tea."

Dante walked toward her.

Every man in the room expected a solemn announcement, perhaps an order to celebrate, perhaps a threat against whoever had kept his child away.

Instead, Dante knelt beside the sofa.

"Lily," he said, his voice rough, "I'm your father."

She blinked. "I know."

"The test proved it."

"I told you."

"You did."

She patted his head with the solemn patience of a preschool teacher. "It's okay. Grown-ups learn slow."

Luca made a strangled sound.

Dante did not care.

He looked at the child, at the delicate curls around her ears and the little crescent mark beneath her collarbone. His eyes burned.

"I'm sorry I wasn't there."

Lily set down the cup.

"Did you get lost?"

He swallowed. "Something like that."

"Mommy says if you get lost, you find a safe grown-up."

Dante looked at the tiny hand resting on his sleeve.

"I should have found you."

Lily climbed into his lap without asking.

His entire body went rigid.

She smelled of baby shampoo, toast, and the chocolate cookie she'd stolen from the breakfast tray. Her fingers were coated in melted chocolate. She wiped them on his white shirt and settled against his chest.

Luca stared.

The man who had once ordered an entire conference room sanitized because someone sneezed had just allowed a child to smear chocolate across a custom-made shirt.

Then Lily sniffled and wiped her nose on his collar.

Dante looked down.

Luca braced for disaster.

Dante simply reached for a tissue.

"Your nose," he murmured.

"It's runny."

"I can see that."

He cleaned her face with absurd care.

Lily examined him. "You're good at that."

"It's my first time."

"You can practice."

Dante's throat tightened. "I'd like that."

Dr. Foster discreetly gathered the paperwork and left. Luca followed, but Dante called him back.

"Wait."

Luca stopped.

"Have the accounts department set up a trust in Lily's name. Fully protected. No outside signatories."

"Of course."

"And locate Elena. I want answers, not theories."

Luca nodded. "We're tracing the clinic transfers. The Vance Foundation paid for an ambulance under a false patient name."

Dante's hand stilled on Lily's back.

"Which patient name?"

"Eleanor Blake."

Lily lifted her head.

"That's Mommy's sleepy name."

Both men looked at her.

"What did you say?" Dante asked.

"The nurse said Eleanor. Mommy said that wasn't her real name."

Dante rose, holding Lily securely against him.

"Luca, get me the clinic's original intake records."

"Already working on it."

"And Victoria?"

"Her family lawyers are trying to block access."

Dante smiled without warmth.

"Let them try."

Lily tugged his collar.

"Daddy, can I have another cookie?"

He looked down at the chocolate covering his shirt.

"After lunch."

"Please?"

"No."

She widened her eyes.

He looked away.

"One."

"Two?"

"One."

"One big one?"

Dante sighed. "One big one."

Luca stared at him with open disbelief.

The Ghost had just lost a negotiation to someone who could not yet tie her shoes.

That evening, Dante found a small photograph tucked inside Lily's backpack. Elena sat on a park bench, visibly pregnant, one hand resting on her stomach. She was smiling toward the camera.

On the back, in Elena's unmistakable handwriting, were the words:

SHE HAS YOUR EYES. I HOPE ONE DAY YOU'LL SEE THEM.

Dante sat alone with the photograph until midnight.

Then his phone rang.

Luca's voice was tight. "Boss, we found the ambulance."

"Where?"

"Abandoned near the Hudson. No patient inside."

Dante stood.

"Any trace of Elena?"

"Only a bloodstained hospital bracelet."

A pause.

"And there's something else. Someone used your personal authorization code to order the transfer."

Dante looked toward the bedroom where Lily slept.

He had not authorized anything.

Someone was using his identity.
