"Mafia Boss, Your Toddler is Here for Child Support!" Chapter 8 — THE OVERTHOUGHT RETRIBUTION
Dante Moretti had three rules for Lily's first day at preschool.
No strangers near her without permission.
No food unless the kitchen had been checked for allergies.
And absolutely no one was allowed to make her cry.
Luca read the list twice.
"Boss, she's going to preschool, not a summit with hostile heads of state."
"Children are unpredictable."
"They're four."
"Lily is three and a half."
"That doesn't make them more dangerous."
Dante looked at him.
Luca sighed. "I'll have security review the perimeter."
The preschool occupied a renovated mansion in an affluent Long Island neighborhood. Its director, Mrs. Harper, had welcomed Lily for a trial morning after Dante's lawyers completed the paperwork.
Lily wore a yellow dress, white sneakers, and a backpack containing crayons, a juice box, and Mr. Fluffington. Dante had reluctantly agreed to leave her pink wand locked at home.
"No consequence stick at school," he told her.
"What if someone is mean?"
"Tell your teacher."
"What if the teacher is mean?"
"Tell me."
"What if you're mean?"
Dante considered the question.
"Tell Luca."
Luca closed his eyes.
At nine fifteen, Lily entered the classroom without looking back.
At nine sixteen, Dante called the school to confirm she had arrived safely.
At nine twenty, he called again to ask whether she had eaten her snack.
At nine thirty, Mrs. Harper politely suggested he allow Lily to enjoy her morning.
Dante interpreted this as an attempt to restrict vital intelligence.
By ten forty, he had stationed a driver across the street and requested a written update every half hour.
Everything remained peaceful until eleven twelve.
A little boy named Oliver Grant wanted the blue castle Lily had built from interlocking blocks.
"Mine," he announced.
"I'm still playing," Lily replied.
Oliver grabbed the largest piece.
Lily held on.
The castle collapsed.
Oliver gave her a small shove. She stumbled backward onto a padded rug, surprised but unhurt.
"That's not nice," she told him.
Oliver stuck out his tongue.
Lily considered her options. She could cry. She could push him back. She could tell the teacher.
Instead, she picked up a red block and placed it on the rug.
"You can have the blue one," she said. "I'm building a rocket now."
Oliver blinked.
The teacher intervened, separated the children, and helped Oliver apologize. Lily accepted the apology on the condition that he help her find the rocket's missing window.
The incident should have ended there.
Unfortunately, a security aide watching from the courtyard had seen Lily fall.
He sent a message to Dante.
MINOR PHYSICAL ALTERCATION. CHILD PUSHED. NO VISIBLE INJURY.
Dante read the first four words.
He did not read the last four.
"Luca. Get the cars."
"Boss?"
"Someone attacked my daughter."
Luca checked the report. "It says she's not injured."
"That is not the point."
"It was another preschooler."
"Then where were the adults?"
"Probably teaching preschool."

Dante was already walking.
Twenty-eight minutes later, a convoy of black SUVs rolled up outside the school. Three company helicopters, redirected from a scheduled security exercise, approached a nearby private landing site. Moretti security personnel arrived in enough numbers to make the quiet neighborhood think a visiting president had taken a wrong turn.
Mrs. Harper stepped outside and nearly dropped her clipboard.
"Mr. Moretti!"
"Where is Lily?"
"She's in the classroom, perfectly safe."
"I received a report that she was assaulted."
"A classmate pushed her during a disagreement over blocks. We handled it immediately."
Dante's expression darkened. "Who was supervising?"
Mrs. Harper straightened. "I understand your concern, but these are children learning boundaries. Lily is fine."
"I want to see her."
He entered the classroom expecting tears.
Instead, Lily was standing on a chair, proudly displaying a red-and-yellow rocket built from plastic blocks.
"Daddy!" she squealed.
Dante crossed the room and crouched before her.
"Are you hurt?"
"No."
"Did someone push you?"
"A little."
His jaw tightened.
"Who?"
Lily pointed at Oliver, who was quietly coloring a picture of a dinosaur.
Dante looked at the boy.
Oliver looked back.
"Are you the big daddy?" Oliver asked.
Dante blinked.
"What?"
"Lily says her daddy is very big and grumpy."
Lily nodded. "But he gives good hugs."
The classroom went silent.
Dante turned back to his daughter. "You were pushed."
"He said sorry."
"That doesn't make it acceptable."
"I know. Teacher helped."
Dante looked at Mrs. Harper. The director met his gaze without flinching.
"Mr. Moretti, children need safety, but they also need room to solve small problems. Your daughter did remarkably well."
Dante glanced toward the rocket.
"She built that?"
"With Oliver."
Lily nodded. "He found the window."
Dante looked again at the little boy. Oliver offered him a green crayon.
"Want to color?"
For one surreal moment, the head of the Moretti organization considered the offer.
Then his phone rang.
Luca spoke quietly. "Boss, the Grant family owns a logistics company. Our analysts have already identified their contracts. Should I proceed with the financial restrictions?"
Dante stepped into the hallway.
"No."
Luca sounded relieved. "Understood."
"Cancel the restrictions. And recall the helicopters."
"Already doing it."
Dante paused. "But have our legal team review the school's safety procedures."
"That I can do."
By noon, the Moretti convoy had departed. Dante had also offered to fund improvements to the school's playground, on the condition that Mrs. Harper decide what was actually needed. She accepted a modest safety grant and firmly declined his suggestion of armored classroom doors.
Lily climbed into the car carrying her rocket.
"Daddy, did you buy my school?"
"No."
"Good."
"Why good?"
"Because then you'd tell everyone what to do."
Dante looked out the window.
Luca made a noise that might have been a cough.
Lily settled against her father.
"Can Oliver come to my birthday?"
"We'll discuss it."
"With interest?"
Dante closed his eyes.
"You are never going to forget that bill, are you?"
"Nope."
His phone vibrated again.
This time the caller was Marcus.
"Boss, we got inside the Westchester facility's records. Room 214 was occupied under the name Eleanor Blake. The patient was moved before our team arrived."
Dante's face hardened.
"Where?"
"We don't know yet. But the security archive contains something you need to see."
A video arrived on his phone.
It showed Elena lying in a hospital bed, pale but unmistakably alive. Victoria stood beside her, holding a tablet.
Elena's lips moved.
Dante increased the volume.
"If you touch my daughter," Elena whispered, "Dante will find out what you did."
Victoria leaned closer.
"He believed me four years ago," she replied. "Why wouldn't he believe me again?"
The video ended.
Dante's grip tightened around the phone.
Lily, half asleep against his chest, stirred.
"Daddy?"
He lowered his voice immediately. "I'm here."
"Don't let the snake lady get Mommy."
Dante looked at the frozen image of Elena.
"I won't."
But then another message arrived from an unknown number.
A photograph.
Elena lay in a different hospital bed, a fresh date displayed on the wall monitor.
Below it was a single line:
IF YOU WANT HER ALIVE, BRING THE RABBIT. COME ALONE.
Dante looked down at Mr. Fluffington, tucked beneath Lily's arm.
For the first time, he understood that the rabbit was not merely a weapon or a toy.
It was what the enemy wanted.
And someone was willing to kill for it.
