"Blacklisted for Three Years, I Returned with My Genius Son." Chapter 1
The Boy on the Screen
Three years after Adrian Blackwell ended Claire Bennett's career, her son appeared on his phone and sold a used toy truck for twice what it was worth.
Adrian almost scrolled past.
Then the boy looked up.
He stood behind a folding table at an outdoor flea market, wearing a blue sweatshirt with one sleeve slipping over his hand. A cardboard sign read NOAH'S SECOND CHANCE TOYS. Beside him, a little girl was shouting prices at anyone who passed.
Noah wasn't shouting. He was watching a boy examine a box of building blocks.
"Your spaceship doesn't have enough windows," he said.
The other child looked down at the bright plastic spaceship tucked under his arm. "It has three."
"These have twelve. You could build a space station."
"My mom just bought this."
"Then ask her first."
The camera swung toward a woman laughing behind her hand. A minute later, with parental approval and considerable excitement, the spaceship changed owners. Noah sold it to the next family for six dollars, put two dollars in a separate jar, and moved the jar beyond the edge of the table.
"Why are you putting that money over there?" the interviewer asked.
"Because that's what I started with. If I mix it up, I might think I earned more than I did."
Adrian sat forward.
It wasn't the answer. Clever children existed. Television producers knew how to make them look cleverer.
It was the small pause before the boy spoke. The narrowed eyes. The way he pressed his lips together while counting, as if he disliked anyone seeing him work something out.
Adrian played the clip again.
"Ethan."
His assistant stopped at the office door, coat over one arm.
"Find out whose child this is."
Ethan glanced at the screen. "Little Bosses? One of our production partners makes it."
"Then it shouldn't take long."
Outside the glass walls of the office, the remaining lights in Blackwell Media's Los Angeles headquarters went dark one row at a time. Adrian replayed the video without sound.
At the end, someone off camera said the boy had earned the most money in his group. Noah turned immediately, searching past the camera.
"Mom?"
A woman's hand entered the frame. He caught it.
The clip ended before Adrian saw her face.
Twenty-six minutes later, Ethan returned without his coat.
"His name is Noah Bennett. He's five."
Adrian looked up.
Ethan set a tablet on the desk. On the screen was a production publicity photograph: the boy beside a woman in a faded green sweatshirt, her dark hair tied back, one hand resting on his shoulder.
Claire.
Adrian's coffee struck the edge of the desk. He caught the cup too late to stop the spill.
Ethan reached for a tissue box.
"Leave it."
The photograph remained between them.
Claire looked thinner than Adrian remembered. Not fragile. There was nothing fragile about the straight line of her shoulders or the way she faced the camera. But she wasn't smiling with her whole face.

The boy leaned against her hip as though that was where he belonged without ever needing to think about it.
"Where are they?"
"The production campus in Burbank. They're filming pickups tonight and an outdoor challenge tomorrow. She's participating as a non-celebrity parent. Her old credits aren't included in the official biography."
Adrian touched the photograph, enlarging the child's face.
Five.
Claire had left him almost six years ago.
"Does she have a partner?"
"Nothing in the production information suggests one. I haven't verified anything beyond that."
"Get the car."
Ethan glanced at the clock. "It's after midnight. The child will be asleep."
Adrian looked at him.
For once, Ethan didn't immediately reach for his phone.
"I can arrange an early visit," he said. "Without waking an entire production."
Adrian's hand closed around the tablet.
"Seven."
"I'll let them know."
Across the city, Claire sat on a plastic chair outside a studio dressing room, trying to calculate whether the hotel laundry service cost more than buying Noah another pair of socks.
The answer was yes. By an insulting amount.
She crossed laundry off tomorrow's list.
Noah slept on a folding cot beside her, one fist closed around a green marble. He had acquired it at the flea market and refused three separate offers to buy it.
"Not everything is inventory," he'd explained.
Her phone vibrated.
Tessa had sent a link, followed by six exclamation points.
YOUR KID IS EVERYWHERE.
Claire watched the opening seconds of the clip. She had been standing ten feet away when it happened. On her small phone screen, Noah seemed even smaller.
A second message arrived.
Don't read the comments yet.
Claire already had.
That face. Isn't that Blackwell's kid?
Wait. Is his mother CLAIRE BENNETT?
I thought she got kicked out of the industry for what she did to Vivian.
Claire locked the phone.
For three years she had imagined being recognized again. Usually it happened in the frozen-food aisle or at a bus stop. Someone would stare, search her name, and decide they knew enough.
She had not imagined strangers putting her son's face beside Adrian's.
Tessa called.
Claire answered quietly. "He's asleep."
"Then walk away from him for a minute."
"I'm not leaving him in a hallway."
Tessa lowered her voice, though she was miles away. "Have you heard from anyone?"
"No."
"That won't last."
"I know."
There was a pause. Then, more gently, "You don't have to explain anything tonight. Not to a producer. Not to him. Call me before you sign anything."
Claire watched Noah's fingers loosen around the marble.
"I'm not signing anything."
"Good. And eat something. You get very reasonable when you're scared, and then you forget food exists."
"I had a sandwich."
"Today?"
Claire looked at the empty wrapper in her bag.
"Recently."
"Claire."
"I'll eat."
A production runner appeared at the corridor entrance, holding tomorrow's revised schedule.

Claire ended the call and accepted the pages.
"We're starting at seven instead of eight," the runner whispered. "Sorry. Also, an investor's visiting. They asked everyone to be camera-ready."
Claire looked down at the Blackwell Media logo in the footer.
"Which investor?"
The runner hesitated. "They didn't say."
He didn't need to.
Noah stirred when she lifted him. His head settled against her neck, hot and heavy with sleep.
"Did we miss the bus?" he murmured.
"No, baby. We're going back to the hotel."
"Marble."
"I've got it."
He relaxed immediately.
In the hotel bathroom, she rinsed his socks in the sink while he slept. Then she stood holding the wet fabric, remembering a different white sink and a pregnancy test laid beside it.
She had taken the hospital confirmation to Adrian's office the following afternoon. Vivian had been inside with him. Claire remembered the soft, relieved sound of her voice and Adrian saying, "I should have put you first a long time ago."
Claire had folded the report until it fit in her palm.
She never unfolded it for him.
At six the next morning, Noah inspected his damp socks hanging over the heater.
"We need a better system," he said.
"We need a washing machine."
"That's a system."
She laughed before she could stop herself.
At the studio, six families gathered beneath lights already warm enough to make her forehead prickle. Melissa Grant stood in the center with her daughter, Lily, adjusting a ribbon that needed no adjustment.
"Our little businessman," Melissa said when Noah arrived. "Quite a performance yesterday."
"He had fun," Claire replied.
Ryan Parker sipped coffee beside his son. "Let's see how everybody does without the editing."
Noah looked at him, then at Claire. She squeezed his hand once.
The director began explaining the grocery challenge. Each child would receive twenty dollars and choose ingredients for a family lunch, accompanied by a camera operator and a safety producer.
Noah accepted his envelope and checked that it contained the right amount.
The side door opened.
Two men entered first. The director stopped speaking.
Adrian followed in a charcoal coat, with Ethan half a step behind him.
Claire felt Noah's fingers shift in hers. Not frightened. Attentive.
Adrian looked at her, and the years between them contracted into the space beneath the studio lights.
Then his eyes lowered to her son.
Noah studied him for a moment.
"Mom," he said, clearly enough for everyone nearby to hear, "why is that man staring at us?"
No one answered.
Adrian came closer.
"Claire. We need to talk."
