"Blacklisted for Three Years, I Returned with My Genius Son." Chapter 4
Let Me Through
"Then stop the segment."
The assistant reached for his headset. Claire went past him before he finished speaking.
She pushed open the task-room door.
Noah's head snapped up. He left the blocks on the floor and ran to her.
Claire dropped to her knees and caught him hard enough that her bag slipped off her shoulder.
"What happened?"
His mouth pressed against her ear.
"She said if I don't listen, they'll send us home. She said you won't get another job."
Claire held him closer.
"You haven't done anything wrong."
Behind him, Vivian rose slowly, palms open.
"Claire? Is something the matter?"
The camera light was still red.
Claire looked at her over Noah's shoulder. Her first thought was so sharp she couldn't have put it into words without shouting.
She felt Noah's breath against her neck.
"We're taking a break," she said.
"Of course. He was doing beautifully. Weren't you, sweetheart?"
Noah didn't turn around.
Claire picked up her bag and stood with him in her arms. He was getting too big to carry comfortably. His shoe struck her thigh, and the strap dug into her wrist.
She didn't put him down.
Rachel caught up with them outside.
"Claire, can you tell me what—"
"Not here."
She walked into their dressing room, shut the door, and sat with Noah on her lap.
For a while, she only rubbed his back.
He wasn't crying. Somehow that made it harder. He sat stiffly, holding his watch as though he had broken it.
"I couldn't hold the button long enough," he said.
"That's all right."
"She kept looking at my hand."
Claire swallowed.
"You don't have to use a button perfectly for me to come. I saw you weren't comfortable."
"Are we leaving?"
"Do you want to?"
He looked down at his shoes.
"I didn't finish the bridge."
"We can build another bridge."
"That's not what I mean."
She waited.
"If we leave, is it because I didn't listen?"
Claire turned him gently so she could see his face.
"No. Look at me, Noah. Adults make decisions about work. You are not responsible for my job. Not if you win a challenge, and not if you don't want to play anymore."
His mouth trembled once.
"She said people don't like you."
Claire felt something inside her give a hard, painful twist.
"Some people don't know me."
"I know you."
"I know you do."
He put his forehead against hers. Only then did his body begin to relax.
Someone knocked softly.
Claire let Rachel in but kept Noah beside her.
"I want this incident documented," she said. "He says she threatened to have us removed and told him I wouldn't work again. I want the complete camera and microphone recordings preserved. All angles. Not just what goes to the editor."
Rachel's eyes moved to Noah.
"I'll speak to Daniel."
"Please do it now. And there will be no more solo segments with Vivian."

"We'll need to discuss the schedule."
"Discuss it. He won't be alone with her."
Rachel nodded, less confidently this time, and left.
Noah watched the closed door.
"Is she in trouble?"
"I don't know yet."
"She'll say she didn't."
Claire looked at him.
"Then she'll be saying something that isn't true. That won't make what you told me less true."
He considered this. "I still want lunch."
Claire laughed, a small broken sound that startled her.
"Good. Me too."
They ate in the room. Noah picked every pea out of his rice and lined them along the lid.
"You negotiated for zucchini yesterday," she said. "But peas are where you draw the line?"
"I didn't buy peas."
She couldn't argue with that.
By late afternoon, Daniel had invited her to the production office.
Claire took Noah to Ben, who was setting up a ring-toss game with two other children, and told him exactly where she would be.
"You can come get me," she said.
"Even if you're talking?"
"Even then."
In the office, Daniel gestured toward a chair.
"Vivian is very upset."
Claire remained standing. "So is my son."
"She says he misunderstood an instruction about completing the challenge."
"Then preserve the audio."
"Some of the microphones were having interference."
"All of them?"
Daniel's eyes shifted toward Rachel, seated beside him.
Claire took out her phone.
"I'm emailing you what I requested. A written incident record, preservation of all original footage, and no unsupervised contact between Vivian and Noah. Until that's confirmed, he isn't filming with her."
"You're making this very formal."
"Yes."
He leaned back.
"You understand we have a production schedule. A sponsor agreement. Six families whose time matters too."
"My son needed an adult to stop. Your schedule didn't do that for him. I did."
Rachel looked down at the table.
Daniel tapped his pen twice.
"We can keep you in the room for future group work. Off camera. We'll revise the schedule."
"And preserve the recordings."
"I'll speak to post-production."
"Put that in your reply."
By the time Claire returned to Noah, an email confirmed the revised supervision arrangement. It referred to her complaint as a misunderstanding. It did, however, acknowledge the request to retain source recordings.
She saved it.
That night, the official account posted a behind-the-scenes clip.
It began with Vivian smiling beside the model city. It cut to Claire entering the room, her face tight, gathering Noah into her arms. His whispered words were inaudible.
Then Vivian, alone on screen.
"She's probably just worried about him. I completely understand. I was so enjoying our time together, but a mother's feelings come first."
The caption asked whether parents sometimes found it difficult to let their children become independent.
Claire watched it twice.
The second time, she noticed the cut between her opening the door and reaching her son. They had removed the moment he ran to her.

Tessa called before she finished scrolling.
"Please tell me you're not sitting there reading that garbage."
"They cut his reaction."
"I know. You can see the jump. I'm saving the clip. Don't reply in the comments."
"I wasn't going to."
"What happened? Tell me properly."
Claire moved into the bathroom, leaving the door partly open so she could see Noah on the bed.
She told Tessa about the threat, his watch, the production meeting, the email. Halfway through, her voice stopped cooperating.
"He thought we'd lose the job because of him."
Tessa went quiet.
Claire gripped the edge of the sink.
"He stood there trying not to upset her because he thought I needed it. He's five, Tess."
"I know."
"I put him in that room."
"And you got him out. Now we work out the next step."
Claire pressed her lips together until she could breathe evenly.
"Can you help me find someone independent to look at the contract? Not connected to Blackwell."
"Yes. Send everything tonight."
After the call, Claire sat beside Noah. He was drawing a bridge on hotel stationery, his concentration fierce.
"Better than the other one?" she asked.
"This one has a path underneath for people. So they don't have to cross where the cars go."
"Good idea."
He pushed the paper toward her.
"You can keep it."
She smoothed the folded corner with her thumb.
When he was asleep, she removed the watch from its charger and opened the activity log. She had set it to record task sessions when she paired it the night before, hoping never to need the feature.
There was a file from that morning.
For a few seconds, she couldn't make herself press play.
Then she put in her earphones.
Blocks clicked together. Vivian asked about the hospital. Noah explained a road. Fabric brushed the microphone, producing a thick rushing noise.
Then Vivian's voice, much closer.
"You need to listen to me. Your mother's already very lucky they're letting her stay."
Claire stopped breathing.
"If you keep being difficult, they'll send you both home. She won't get another chance. Do you want that to be your fault?"
A long silence.
Then Noah, so quietly she had to turn the volume up.
"I want my mom."
Claire took out the earphones.
Across the room, her son's drawing lay beneath the bedside lamp. A bridge, a path, two small figures safely underneath.
She copied the original file to her computer, then to a separate backup. She kept the watch unchanged. She sent Tessa a short message asking her to arrange a careful review of what they had.
Only after that did she open the official clip again.
Vivian smiled at the camera. The comments called her patient, generous, kind.
Claire saved the post, its caption, and the time.
Then she put the phone down and pulled her chair closer to Noah's bed.
She would not make him sit through another private lesson. She would not ask him to repeat those words for a camera.
But somewhere, beneath the version they had chosen to show, there was a little boy asking for his mother.
This time, she had his voice.
