"Blacklisted for Three Years, I Returned with My Genius Son." Chapter 6
The Invitation
The sender agreed to contact Mara but didn't identify himself.
Claire forwarded the exchange to Tessa, who responded with a message consisting entirely of suspicion.
At least let Mara establish who he is before you trust anything.
I trust the files to be checked, Claire replied. Not the person.
The distinction mattered more the following afternoon, when the hotel desk called about a delivery.
The envelope contained a letter from Adrian's attorneys proposing a formal process to establish paternity and discuss parenting arrangements. It referred to his wish for meaningful involvement in the child's life. A second section requested extensive information about Noah's medical history, education, and residence.
Claire read it once standing up, then again at the small desk.
Noah worked on a math puzzle on the bed. He had pushed two pillows behind his back and removed one sock for reasons he hadn't shared.
"Is that bad mail?"
Claire lowered the pages. "It's grown-up mail."
"You read the same bit three times."
"Sometimes grown-ups use too many words."
"Like the juice rules."
"Exactly like the juice rules."
He returned to his puzzle. She took photographs of every page and sent them to Mara.
The letter wasn't an order. She knew that. Mara had already warned her to distinguish a demand from a decision someone had the power to enforce. But Adrian's name on the first page still made the room feel smaller.
He could afford to keep asking. She had to pay someone each time she answered.
That evening, Noah put down his pencil.
"Is the gray-coat man my dad?"
Claire had expected the question. Expecting it didn't help.
She moved from the desk to the bed.
"Why do you ask?"
"People stop talking when I come near. And Ben told someone not to say things about my dad in front of me."
Claire closed her eyes briefly.
"Yes," she said. "Adrian is your father."
Noah rubbed the eraser with his thumb.
"Does he know?"
"He didn't before. He does now."
"Why didn't he know?"
She chose the words slowly.
"We stopped being together before you were born. I didn't tell him I was going to have you. Things between us were very difficult, and I didn't trust him to be kind to me."
"Was he kind before?"
"Sometimes."
Noah absorbed this with a seriousness that hurt to watch.
"Do I have to go somewhere with him?"
"Nothing is happening tonight. You're staying here with me. If there are decisions to make, I'll explain them. I won't let people surprise you."
"I don't know him."
"I know."
"He doesn't know about my marble."
Claire brushed his hair back.
"No. He doesn't."
Noah leaned into her hand, then asked if they could finish the puzzle together. She stayed until he found the missing pattern and fell asleep wearing the remaining sock.
At eleven, Ethan knocked.
Claire stepped into the corridor and pulled the door almost closed behind her.

He held no folder this time.
"Mr. Blackwell would like to avoid an adversarial process," he began.
"Then he can tell his attorneys that."
"His mother is hosting a family dinner on Saturday. He'd like you and Noah to attend. An opportunity to speak without production around you."
"No."
Ethan's gaze flicked toward the door.
"He said he'd be willing to pause the legal correspondence while you talked."
Claire looked at him for a long moment.
"Do you hear how that sounds?"
He didn't answer.
"Bring my child to dinner, and the expensive letters stop for a while."
"I can take back your concerns."
"Take back my answer."
Ethan nodded.
Before he left, she asked, "How long have you worked for him?"
"Seven years."
"Then you were there when I called about the video."
His expression changed.
"Yes."
"You told me to contact counsel."
"Yes."
Claire waited for an explanation. He seemed to consider several, then offered none.
"Good night, Ethan."
She went inside and locked the door.
The next morning, Rachel confirmed that the family dinner was unrelated to the show's schedule. Claire had asked because she wanted the answer in writing, not because she believed the two worlds were separate.
Mara replied to Adrian's attorneys. Claire read the draft before approving it, relieved by the absence of threats or pleading. Their questions would be addressed through an appropriate process. Noah's routine and welfare came first. Unannounced approaches were unwelcome.
It was the first document with Adrian's name on it that had made her breathe more easily.
On Friday, she and Noah were leaving the studio when Eleanor Blackwell stepped out of the reception lounge.
Claire recognized the pearl brooch before she registered the woman's face. Eleanor had worn it to a charity dinner years ago, the night she introduced Claire as a young actress Adrian was helping.
Helping. As though Claire hadn't been sleeping beside him for two years.
Eleanor's driver remained near the exterior door. Daniel hovered behind her with a strained expression.
"Claire."
"Mrs. Blackwell."
Eleanor looked down at Noah. Her composure shifted, just enough that Claire saw it. Her eyes moved over his forehead, the shape of his mouth, his hand wrapped around his mother's fingers.
"Goodness," she said quietly.
Noah stepped closer to Claire.
Eleanor recovered. "We should speak privately."
"You can contact my attorney to arrange a conversation."
"Surely we don't need attorneys for every exchange."
"Your son seems to think we do."
Daniel found something urgent to inspect on his phone.
Eleanor's mouth tightened. "You kept Adrian's child from him for five years. Now you bring him onto a television program financed by Adrian's company. You must understand how that looks."
Claire felt Noah's fingers tense.
"Not in front of him."
"Then come with me."
"No."
Eleanor straightened. "I'm trying to resolve an unfortunate situation with some dignity."
"Then stop calling my son a situation."
For a moment, even Daniel stopped pretending to read.
Eleanor glanced at Noah again. "I didn't say that."
"You came here to discuss him, and you're speaking as though he can't hear you. He can."
Claire crouched.
"We're going to the car now. Maya's waiting by the door."
"Together?" Noah asked.
"Together."
She stood and faced Eleanor.
"I entered this program for paid work. Not to announce a relationship with your family. If Adrian wants to discuss Noah, he has a way to do that. Cornering us at work won't replace it."
"You always did mistake resistance for self-respect."
Claire remembered how that voice could make a roomful of people doubt the person it addressed.
"And you always expected me to agree before I was allowed to leave."
She walked past her.
Outside, Noah took three quick steps to keep up. Claire slowed immediately.
"Sorry, baby."
He looked back through the glass doors.
"She's his mom?"
"Yes."
"She said you hid me."
Claire knelt beside the low planter, out of the flow of the entrance.
"You weren't hidden. You had a home and a school and people who loved you. I didn't tell Adrian about you. That's something between me and him."
Noah looked at her for a long time.
"If he wanted us," he asked, "why did he make you stop working?"
Claire had answers she could give a lawyer. She had explanations she could offer a friend.
For her son, kneeling beside a planter with one shoelace coming undone, none of them felt sufficient.
