"Blacklisted for Three Years, I Returned with My Genius Son." Chapter 10

The Part They Cut

Daniel reached toward the drive, then stopped short of taking it.

"You can't walk into a live final and demand airtime."

"I demanded a correction days ago. You kept using the footage."

"There are procedures."

"Your legal department has the materials. Call them."

Rachel touched his elbow. "The package is nearly over. We need a decision."

He looked at the monitor beside the stage. On it, Vivian smiled as a prerecorded version of herself handed Noah a block.

Claire's phone vibrated. Tessa had brought it over without Claire noticing.

"Mara's on," she said.

Claire put the phone on speaker at a low volume. Mara asked to speak to the network lawyer responsible for the broadcast. Daniel said he would arrange that, then stepped away and made a call.

For several seconds, Claire stood with the drive in her hand while the studio continued around her. A crew member moved a stool. The host consulted his cards. Noah tried to see her past a camera.

She lifted her free hand so he knew where she was.

He lifted his back.

On the screen, the highlights package ended.

The host received an instruction and announced a short break before the results. The broadcast switched to commercials. In the room, the applause faded into an uncertain buzz.

Daniel returned with his phone pressed to his ear.

"They're reviewing the statement."

"They've had it since yesterday," Mara said through Claire's phone. "The source material came from your own production archive. My client is requesting that the false account you repeated today be corrected."

Daniel listened to the person on his call. His face changed, not into sympathy but into calculation.

"We'll play the relevant portion with an explanation," he said finally. "No unrelated allegations. No commentary on the old incident."

Claire looked at him.

"Don't cut his words out again."

Rachel took the drive to the technical supervisor. He already had a copy from the legal review, but checked the filenames against the list Mara supplied. Claire stayed beside the workstation while he prepared the playback.

"Picture from the fixed camera," he said. "Separate watch audio underneath, labeled. Then the continuous interview shot."

"Yes."

No miraculous recovery. No sound conjured from a silent ceiling camera. The image showed what the image had captured. The recording preserved what had been said close to her child's wrist.

Together, they showed enough.

Vivian's manager came over while the technicians worked.

"What's going on?"

Daniel drew him away. Vivian watched from the desk, one hand resting on her water glass.

Claire went to Noah.

"They're going to explain something about the earlier task," she told him. "Do you want to sit with Tessa in the quiet room?"

"Are you staying?"

"I'll be here. Ben can take you over, and I'll come get you."

He looked at Vivian, then nodded.

Claire kissed the top of his head. "You don't need to do anything."

He went with Ben, looking back once. Tessa followed, taking his water bottle and jacket.

When the broadcast resumed, the host stood near the judges' desk.

His voice was different now. Less bright.

"Before we announce the results, we need to correct a segment shown in our season recap. The child's parent disputed that account before today's broadcast. We have reviewed additional source material, which you will now see."

Vivian turned toward Daniel.

The screen changed.

Claire saw Noah on the floor beside the model city. Vivian touched her microphone. The main camera moved away. The fixed shot continued.

A caption identified the separate audio source.

"You need to listen to me. Your mother's already very lucky they're letting her stay."

Even knowing what came next, Claire felt her body resist hearing it in that room.

"If you keep being difficult, they'll send you both home. She won't get another chance. Do you want that to be your fault?"

Onscreen, Noah's hand moved toward the watch. Vivian's hand came down beside it.

"I want my mom."

The recording continued through the scraping chair and the opening door. Claire entered. Noah ran to her.

This time, nobody removed that part.

Somewhere in the audience, a woman said, "Oh, my God."

Vivian stood.

"That's not what happened."

The host looked toward the technical desk.

"We have received confirmation of the source files from production," he said. "The footage and audio were reviewed separately."

"Anyone can put sound over a picture. Claire has hated me for years. You're letting her do this on television?"

Claire stepped to the microphone Rachel offered.

"I reported it the day it happened. I asked you to preserve the recordings. I asked you to stop showing my son as though he was happy in that room."

She looked at Daniel, not Vivian.

"You had the complaint before you published the first clip. You had the supporting material before today's recap."

The host turned slightly, giving the camera a clear view of the producer standing beside the stage.

Daniel looked away.

Vivian's manager reached her chair. She pulled her arm out of his hand.

"She interrupted a scheduled task. I was trying to explain consequences. Children need boundaries."

The education specialist removed his glasses.

"Telling a five-year-old he'll cost his mother her employment is not an explanation of a game."

Vivian stared at him, then at Claire.

"You planned this."

"I planned to take my son home," Claire said. "You kept using him."

The next clip began: Noah and Lily at the fruit-drink stall, coins spread across the counter.

Vivian claimed she had taught the pricing strategy.

"We didn't talk yesterday," Noah said clearly.

Then his explanation about the cups. Then Vivian laughing it away. Then Noah insisting Lily had helped too.

The contrast needed no narration.

Vivian sat down abruptly. Her manager crouched beside her, speaking quickly. She wasn't listening.

Her gaze fixed on something beyond Claire's shoulder.

Adrian stood at the backstage entrance with Ethan. Claire hadn't seen him arrive. Perhaps he had been there all afternoon. She no longer cared to track his movements.

"Adrian," Vivian said into the microphone.

The host started to speak. She raised her voice over him.

"Tell them. You know what she's like. You know what she did to me."

Adrian didn't move.

Vivian's fingers tightened around the microphone.

"You said you wouldn't let her do it again."

Claire felt the familiar shape of that appeal. The injured voice. The invitation to choose before examining what was true.

For three years, she had remembered him choosing.

Adrian came to the side microphone. Ethan stopped behind him.

"The material shown today is consistent with what I've reviewed," Adrian said.

Vivian shook her head.

"No. You don't understand—"

"And I've reopened the review of the video released three years ago. The version used to justify ending Claire's contracts omitted material context."

The audience stirred again, louder this time.

Claire stood very still.

Adrian looked toward her, but she kept her eyes on the empty stool where Noah had been sitting.

"I authorized action against her without establishing the full facts," he said. "That was my decision."

Vivian rose so quickly her chair scraped backward.

"You believed me. You saw me afterward. You can't pretend you didn't."

"I'm not pretending that."

"Then say it! Say she hurt me!"

Her manager took the microphone from her hand. For a moment she fought him for it, and the studio heard a sharp burst of feedback.

Claire flinched before she could stop herself.

Rachel moved between Vivian and the stage steps. The host announced another pause. Vivian was guided away from the desk, still talking, her carefully gentle voice gone.

Claire turned toward the quiet room.

Noah stood at the doorway beside Tessa, wearing his jacket with one sleeve pushed up.

He didn't ask whether she had won.

He came straight to her.
