"Blacklisted for Three Years, I Returned with My Genius Son." Chapter 14
A Different Kind of Test
The first school Claire visited had a waiting list long enough that the admissions officer apologized before she finished saying her name.
The second could offer Noah a place but not the advanced work the clinic recommended. At the third, someone suggested he might enjoy helping the other children finish their worksheets.
"He does," Claire said. "He also needs something to learn."
She returned to the clinic report and called the number beside Westbridge Academy.
The admissions coordinator had read it before their appointment. That alone made Claire hopeful.
On the morning of the assessment, Noah insisted on his blue shirt. The collar had a crease she couldn't iron out, so she stopped trying.
They took the bus, then walked the final six blocks. Outside the school, a line of cars curved around a planted island. A uniformed attendant opened doors while children climbed out with new backpacks.
Noah looked at the fountain near the entrance.
"Do the fish go to school here too?"
"Those are leaves."
He peered closer. "Oh. Bad fish."
Claire was still smiling when they reached the sign-in table.
A woman in a camel coat glanced from her face to the name on the form.
"You're the television mother."
Claire finished writing her phone number.
"I was on a program, yes."
"My sister sent me that clip. Such a drama."
"It was a difficult situation."
The woman looked at Noah. "I suppose this is the school to try while everyone knows who he is."
Claire put down the pen.
Before she could answer, the admissions coordinator came around the table.
"Noah? I'm Ms. Rivera. We spoke on the phone, Claire. Thank you for bringing the clinic materials."
She crouched to tell Noah where he would be going and what his mother would do while he was there. He asked whether he could stop if he finished early.
"You can tell the teacher you're finished. She may have something else for you to try."
He approved of this arrangement.
At the classroom door, he leaned toward Claire.
"The coat lady thinks I can't do it."
"She doesn't know you."
"Should I tell her?"
"You have something more interesting to do."
He looked through the door at a table of wooden shapes.
"Yes."
Claire sat in the waiting area with the fee schedule on her lap. The program compensation and education award meant she could consider options she couldn't have considered two months earlier. They didn't mean every number had stopped mattering.
The award was restricted to approved educational expenses. Her program pay had already gone toward the apartment deposit, overdue bills, and a reserve she was trying very hard not to touch.
She could make Westbridge work for a while if the placement suited him. She could not pretend a place at an expensive school was the same thing as long-term security.

After an hour, Ms. Rivera invited her to the head's office.
Noah sat beside a globe, turning it with one finger. He stopped immediately when Claire entered.
"I didn't break anything," he said.
The head of school smiled. "An excellent opening statement."
Dr. Lawson invited Claire to sit. Noah's assessment papers lay on his desk.
"His reasoning is unusually advanced," he said. "That agrees with the clinic's findings. We also saw him explain an answer, reconsider an assumption, and ask for help when an instruction was unclear. Those things matter to us."
"Was anything difficult for him?" Claire asked.
Dr. Lawson glanced at Noah. "Waiting while I found the next set of materials."
"You had them in the wrong drawer," Noah explained.
"I did."
Claire relaxed a little.
They discussed Westbridge's mixed-age enrichment group, how it worked alongside ordinary classroom time, and the fact that an initial assessment wasn't a promise that every placement would fit forever.
"We'd like to offer a provisional place," Dr. Lawson said. "And with your permission, coordinate with Horizon. Their letter says he's invited to the Boston evaluation next month. We have a partnership with the foundation. A successful evaluation could open support beyond what we provide here."
Claire asked about cost before she could be embarrassed by needing to.
There was no assessment charge from Horizon. Travel and accommodation were separate. Any later funding depended on the program offered.
She made notes.
"You don't need to decide today," Dr. Lawson said.
"Could he visit a class before we do?" Claire asked.
"Certainly."
"And if he's unhappy after he starts, who do I speak to?"
Dr. Lawson gave her the classroom teacher's name and Ms. Rivera's direct number. Claire wrote both down. It felt different from asking whether a school would take him. She was asking whether it would suit him, and nobody at the desk seemed offended by the distinction.
Noah looked away from the globe.
"Can I see the library?"
"On your visit," Dr. Lawson said.
"The books in the waiting room were good, but one stopped halfway."
"Then we'd better let you finish it."
Noah had returned to the globe. He looked up at that.
Outside, Claire found him studying the fishless fountain again.
"What did you think?" she asked.
"The puzzles were good. There was a boy who knew all the flags."
"Would you like to come back?"
"Yes. Would you?"
She laughed. "They didn't offer me a place."
"You could help them find the right drawer."
They walked toward the bus stop. Halfway there, he said, "You were doing money in your head."
"Was I?"
"You squeezed your fingers together when he said Boston."
Claire loosened her hand.
"I'm working it out."
"We can use my jar."
The flea-market coins were on his bedroom shelf in a washed jam jar.
"Your jar is for something you want."
"I want to go."
She stopped walking.
Noah looked up, expecting an argument.
"Then we'll work out a contribution," she said. "A small one. You don't have to pay for being a child."
"Can my contribution buy the snacks?"
"Possibly one airport snack."
His eyebrows rose. "How expensive are they?"
"Terrible. We'll pack our own."
He nodded solemnly.
That evening, Mara forwarded an offer from Adrian's side to cover the Boston trip directly. Flights, hotel, and transfers had been outlined without consulting Claire about dates or preferences.
She asked for the offer to be declined in its current form.
Ethan called with her permission to clarify whether she objected to all assistance or the arrangements themselves.
Noah sat beside her on the kitchen floor, sorting groceries into categories that made sense only to him.
"He wants to give me things?" he asked.
Claire covered the microphone. "For the trip."
"Can I ask something?"
She told Ethan Noah had a question and put the call on speaker.
"Is it because he wants me to go," Noah asked, "or because he wants Mom to say yes to him later?"
Ethan was quiet for a moment.
"I can't answer for him," he said. "I can tell him what you asked."
"Okay."
After the call, Noah added three cans to a stack.
"If it's just for going, we could take it."
"We'll see what the actual offer is."
"It should say. On the paper."
Claire watched him steady the cans before they fell.
"Yes," she said. "It should."
