"The Alpha Who Carried His Enemy's Baby" Chapter 1 — The Little Wolf Who Called the King Daddy
The first thing Leo Ravenscroft stole from the Wolf King's headquarters was a biscuit.
The second was the silence of an entire kingdom.
He was three and a half years old, barely tall enough to reach the reception desk, with a blue backpack shaped like a whale and a bottle of warm milk clutched to his chest. Two small silver ears poked through his dark curls. He had hidden them beneath a knitted cap on the bus, just as Papa had taught him. But the cap had fallen off somewhere between the security gates and the marble staircase.
That was unfortunate. Papa said people became frightened when they saw his ears.
Leo thought people were frightened far too easily.
The guard at the first gate had asked where his parents were. Leo had told him that his father was upstairs. It wasn't exactly a lie. His tablet had found the photograph: a very tall man with silver-blue eyes, black hair, and an expression like the thunderclouds Papa watched through their apartment window.
Leo had found the address inside the wolf-pack navigation network. He wasn't supposed to touch Papa's laptop. He especially wasn't supposed to borrow the little metal key that made the encrypted maps work. But Papa had been coughing blood into a towel that morning, and Leo had heard him whisper, "Not again. Please, not another one."
Leo knew what "another one" meant. Papa's shirts were getting tight around his middle. Papa had begun falling asleep at the kitchen table. Last night, Leo had pressed his ear against Papa's stomach and heard a tiny heartbeat that wasn't Papa's.
So he had come to find the other grown-up responsible.
The route to the throne chamber had been harder than the map suggested. At the service entrance, Leo had discovered a scanner that refused to recognize his face. He had waited until a cook carrying six trays of pastries opened the door, then slipped behind the cart. When a cleaner asked whose child he was, he had answered, "My daddy works here," with such conviction that she pointed him toward the administrative wing.
He passed a room full of monitors showing the kingdom's mountain roads. One screen displayed a photograph of a missing war commander. Leo stopped in front of it. Papa looked younger, with short hair and a fierce expression, but there was no mistaking him. Under the picture was a red warning: SUBJECT UNLOCATED.
Leo did not know what "unlocated" meant. He knew only that the adults had been looking for Papa and had failed. He made a face at the screen.
"You're not very good at finding things," he informed the empty room.
Then he followed the smell of breakfast and the sound of many frightened heartbeats.
The throne chamber was at the top of a staircase wider than the street outside their apartment. Golden wolves stood carved into the banisters. Armed guards lined the walls. Hundreds of adults knelt with their heads bowed before a black stone throne.

Leo stepped around their knees.
On the throne sat Fenrir Blackthorne, King of the Northern Packs.
He had sentenced three traitors before breakfast. The fourth, a council courier named Halden, trembled beneath the king's gaze. Fenrir wore a black uniform without medals, as if his authority required no decoration. His silver wolf ears stood motionless above his dark hair. When he spoke, his voice carried to the farthest door without rising.
"You sold the eastern patrol routes to men who hunt our children. Give me one reason you should see another sunrise."
Halden's mouth worked uselessly.
Fenrir rose. Every guard straightened. The prisoner folded to the floor.
Then a small voice said, "Excuse me."
Nobody moved.
Leo squeezed between two kneeling advisers and approached the throne, leaving damp little footprints across the polished stone. A guard reached for him, then froze when the king's eyes flicked toward his hand.
"I need to talk to you," Leo announced.
Fenrir looked down.
The child looked up.
It was like staring into a mirror that had somehow remembered a softer version of his face. Those silver-blue eyes belonged to the Blackthorne bloodline. So did the stubborn tilt of the chin. The boy's ears were pale silver, and a small fluffy tail escaped the back of his coat.
"Who brought you here?" Fenrir asked.
"The bus. And a lady who gave me a biscuit." Leo considered him gravely. "Daddy, why did you make Papa cry?"
The chamber went utterly still.
One adviser dropped his ceremonial staff. Somewhere beyond the windows, a raven shrieked.
Fenrir did not hear either sound. The word had struck a place inside him that four years of war had failed to destroy.
Daddy.
He descended the steps slowly. Every witness expected him to order the child removed. Instead, he crouched until their eyes were level.
"Tell me your name."
"Leo. Leo Ravenscroft. I'm three and a half." He displayed three fingers, then struggled to raise a fourth halfway. "Papa says halves count."
Ravenscroft.
Fenrir's heart gave one violent beat.
Ethan Ravenscroft had vanished on the night the old king was buried. Fenrir had searched border towns, mountain passes, hospitals, and human cities. Every lead had dissolved. Every official report had said Ethan was dead or determined never to be found.
Fenrir had never believed either conclusion.
"Where is your papa?" he asked.
Leo hugged his milk bottle. "Are you going to shout at him?"
"No."
"You shout at everybody."
Several advisers stared at the floor with sudden fascination.
"Sometimes," Fenrir admitted.
"Papa says you're a bad wolf."
Fenrir's mouth tightened. "Your papa has reasons."
"He says you break things when you're angry."
"I used to."
"He says you broke his heart."
The king could have endured another blade through his chest more easily.
In the years since Ethan vanished, Fenrir had forbidden the court to remove his name from the military rolls. Every winter, a fresh uniform had been delivered to the empty commander's quarters. Every spring, the household staff quietly asked whether they should clear the room. Fenrir always said no.

He had once found an old training glove beneath Ethan's bed and stood holding it until dawn. His advisers believed the king's fury came from a wounded pride that could not forgive desertion. They did not know he still remembered Ethan at seventeen, laughing with snow in his hair after knocking the future king into a frozen lake.
They did not know how often he had wondered whether that laughter was gone forever.
A silver light trembled in Leo's pupils. Fenrir felt it before he understood it: an untrained royal mind reaching instinctively for its own blood. The connection opened like a door in winter.
A memory struck him.
A cramped apartment. Rain hammering against a window. Ethan kneeling beside a narrow bed, his face white with pain, one hand pressed against his abdomen. No healers. No guards. Only a human midwife and a lamp that flickered every time thunder shook the building.
Then a baby's cry.
Ethan, shaking and exhausted, gathered a tiny silver-eared infant against his chest. Tears spilled down his cheeks as he whispered, "You're safe, little wolf. I'll keep you safe. Even if I have to do it alone."
Fenrir staggered.
A captain lunged forward. Fenrir raised one hand, and the man stopped.
The vision vanished. Leo swayed, suddenly pale.
"Easy," Fenrir murmured, steadying him by the shoulders. "Don't force your gift."
"Was that magic?"
"Yes."
"Papa says magic gives you headaches."
"He's right."
Leo examined him. "You look sad."
Fenrir could not explain what it meant to discover that the person you had mourned was alive, that a child had been born, and that both had lived beyond your reach because they feared you.
He glanced at Halden, still kneeling nearby. The courier's expression had changed. His fear now held calculation.
Fenrir recognized the danger immediately. News of a royal heir could become a weapon before sunset.
"Captain Soren," he said, "seal the chamber. Nobody leaves until I say otherwise. The prisoner goes into protected custody. No one speaks of this child outside these walls."
"Yes, Your Majesty."
Leo tugged his sleeve. "Am I in trouble?"
"No."
"Papa will be mad. I took his bus money."
"Then we'll give it back."
"And I took his computer key."
"We'll return that too."
"And I didn't eat my vegetables."
For the first time in years, a sound almost like laughter escaped Fenrir.
He removed his gloves. His hands, which had broken swords and ended rebellions, looked absurdly large beside the child's fingers.
"May I hold your hand, Leo?"
Leo thought about it. "Only if you promise not to hurt Papa."
Fenrir answered without hesitation. "I promise."
The boy placed his hand in the king's.
A second pulse moved through their joined skin. Not a memory this time, but a direction: rain, engine oil, a riverside road, and beneath it all the scent Fenrir had carried in his dreams for four unbearable years.
Cedar. Winter mint. The fierce, unmistakable presence of Ethan Ravenscroft.
Fenrir shut his eyes.
Far away, in a human city, someone who had once belonged at his side was alive.
And in terrible danger.
He opened his eyes and looked at Soren.
"Prepare the cars. Quietly. The boy stays under my personal protection."
Leo frowned. "Are we getting Papa?"
Fenrir's wolf stirred beneath his skin, not with triumph but with an old, aching recognition.
"Yes," he said.
Then, too softly for anyone but the child to hear, he added, "Found you."
