"The Alpha Who Carried His Enemy's Baby" Chapter 2 — The Runaway Alpha
Ethan Ravenscroft knew his son was missing before the school called.
The empty milk bottle on the kitchen counter told him first. Then the blue backpack was gone. Then he saw the little wolf-shaped drawing beside his laptop: a tall black wolf, a smaller silver wolf, and a scribbled arrow pointing north.
"Leo," he whispered.
His phone rang. The school secretary asked whether Leo would be absent that morning. Ethan ended the call and opened his computer with shaking hands.
Someone had accessed the old Northern Pack network using his retired military credentials.
Someone three feet tall.
"You impossible little genius."
Ethan was already reaching for his motorcycle keys when nausea seized him. He braced himself against the kitchen table until the room steadied. For weeks he had blamed the exhaustion on overtime at the garage. He had avoided the obvious explanation because accepting it meant remembering a night at the northern border, months earlier, when he and Fenrir had met by chance and failed, for a few hours, to remain strangers.
He had left before dawn.
He had told himself it was the last time.
Now the loose sweater he wore at home no longer concealed the shape beneath it, and the narrow white work shirts in his wardrobe had become instruments of torture. He pulled on a black sleeveless top and a heavy jacket, then ran down the stairs.
Rain lashed the street.
Ethan had learned to live in two worlds without belonging entirely to either. In the human city, he was simply Ethan, the mechanic who stayed late for customers with no money and knew which diner would give his little boy an extra pancake. At home, he locked the curtains before Leo's ears emerged, stitched secret openings into the backs of his trousers for a restless tail, and told bedtime stories about wolves who lived among the stars.
The hardest questions came after the lights went out.
Why did Leo have silver eyes when Papa's were green? Why did the wolves in his dreams call him prince? Why did Papa sometimes wake up saying a name he refused to explain?
Ethan always found a way to answer without lying. Yet each answer had become smaller, less convincing, until Leo began searching for the truth himself.
At the garage, his employer, Mara, stepped from beneath a raised truck as he entered.
"You look awful," she said.
"My son's gone."
Her wrench hit the floor. "What?"
"I know where he went. I need the van."
Mara threw him the keys without asking another question. Ethan had worked for her for nearly four years, never missing a shift unless Leo was ill. She knew he had secrets. She also knew he could repair an engine by touch and spot a dangerous stranger before the stranger opened the door.
"Call me when you find him," she said.
Ethan nodded, then stopped.

Outside, three black vehicles turned into the street.
His blood went cold.
The lead car stopped opposite the garage. Armed men emerged in disciplined silence. Black Wolf Guard. Ethan recognized their spacing, their hands, their habit of scanning rooftops before doorways. He had trained half of them.
And then Fenrir stepped into the rain.
Four years had not softened him. If anything, kingship had sharpened every hard line of his face. He wore a dark overcoat, his black hair wet at the temples, his silver ears concealed beneath a hood. He looked at Ethan as if the whole city had disappeared.
Ethan crossed the distance in three strides and punched him.
The impact cracked across the empty street.
Fenrir did not retaliate.
"Where is my son?" Ethan demanded.
"Safe."
"You took him?"
"He came to me. Alone."
Ethan hit him again. This time Fenrir caught his wrist, more reflex than attack. Ethan twisted, drove a knee toward his ribs, and nearly succeeded. His body remembered every movement. But halfway through the turn, dizziness washed over him.
Fenrir felt the change at once.
"Ethan—"
"Don't say my name."
"You're ill."
"I'm angry. There's a difference."
Ethan wrenched his wrist free. The sudden motion made him stumble. Fenrir reached toward him, then stopped when Ethan's eyes flashed.
"Touch me again, and I'll break your hand."
"You taught me that threat when you were sixteen," Fenrir said quietly.
"I was serious then too."
Rain ran down Ethan's jaw. A cut had opened at the corner of his mouth where he had bitten it during the struggle. Fenrir's gaze caught on the blood, and something fierce moved behind his eyes.
A door slammed behind Ethan. Mara emerged holding a tire iron, her expression murderous. She looked from the armed convoy to Ethan's clenched fists.
"Ethan? Do you need me to call the police?"
"No," Ethan answered, then added, "Not yet."
Fenrir inclined his head toward her. "Thank you for looking after him."
"I don't know who you are," Mara replied, "but if he comes back with so much as a bruise, I'll find out."
For a heartbeat, the feared Wolf King looked almost impressed.
Ethan said, "Mara, lock the shop. I'll call you when Leo and I are safe."
She did not move until he nodded again. Then she went inside, leaving the door open just enough to watch.
"Your son is in my private quarters," he said. "He ate breakfast. He has a warm blanket and two guards outside the door. He believes I've stolen his papa's bus money."
Despite himself, Ethan pictured Leo delivering this accusation with grave outrage. The image almost broke him.
"I want to see him. Now."
"You will."
"Then move."
Fenrir glanced at the Guard. "Everyone back to the cars."
Soren hesitated. "Your Majesty, the area isn't secure."
"It is now."
The soldiers obeyed. Fenrir and Ethan stood alone beneath the rain, surrounded by the smell of wet asphalt and engine oil.

"You should have told me," Fenrir said.
Ethan laughed once, bitterly. "Told you what? That I survived? That I was pregnant? That your council would have taken my rank and locked me in a royal nursery?"
"I never ordered that."
"You wore the crown that made it possible."
The words landed harder than the punches.
Fenrir's gaze lowered. "I searched for you."
"I know."
"I buried men who lied about your death."
"I know that too."
"Then you know I never stopped—"
"Don't." Ethan's voice cracked. "Don't say something you can't undo."
Fenrir took off his overcoat and held it out. Ethan refused with a look. Fenrir placed it on the hood of the van instead, where Ethan could choose whether to take it.
That simple restraint hurt more than any command.
For years Ethan had built his survival around an image of Fenrir as an unchanging tyrant. It was easier to hate a man who never learned.
A gust of wind carried a familiar scent between them. Ethan hated the way his wolf responded. Four years of separation had not erased the instinctive recognition of Fenrir's presence. His body wanted to step closer even while his mind counted escape routes.
He remembered a winter campaign when Fenrir had carried him three miles after an ambush shattered his ankle. Ethan had cursed him the entire way. Fenrir had listened, expressionless, and refused to put him down until a healer arrived. They had argued about that incident for months. Ethan had called it arrogance. Fenrir had called it logistics.
Now Ethan could see how often their arguments had hidden things neither man knew how to say.
"I was there when your father took me in," Ethan said. "I wore your family's colors. I fought at your side. The moment I changed, your council spoke about me as property."
"They were wrong."
"You said nothing."
Fenrir's jaw tightened. "I was trying to keep the pack from tearing itself apart after my father's murder."
"And I was the part you let them tear away."
Neither moved.
A truck passed at the far end of the street, splashing water through the gutter. Ethan shivered. Fenrir's hand rose instinctively toward his face, then paused.
"You're bleeding," Fenrir said. "May I?"
Ethan could have refused. Instead he stood still.
Fenrir brushed the blood from the corner of his mouth with his thumb. The contact was brief and careful. Ethan caught his wrist, not to push him away immediately, but because the memory of another touch had risen between them: a ruined chapel, a storm, Fenrir's forehead resting against his, the impossible relief of being found.
Ethan released him.
"Leo doesn't know everything," he said.
"Then we'll tell him only what he needs to know. Together, if you'll allow it."
Ethan looked toward the vehicles. "I ride with you. No handcuffs. No guards touching me. And if Leo asks to leave, we leave."
"Agreed."
"You don't get to make decisions about my body."
Fenrir's expression changed. "Agreed."
Ethan hated how much he wanted to believe him.
He reached for the coat on the van, but a sharp ache beneath his ribs stopped him. He covered it quickly. Not quickly enough.
Fenrir had already noticed his shallow breathing, the exhaustion beneath his defiance, the protective angle of his hand.
Then the rain shifted.
A scent reached Fenrir through the wet air: cedar and winter mint, the familiar trace of Ethan's altered nature—and underneath it, faint as a heartbeat heard through stone, something new.
Something impossibly familiar.
Fenrir went motionless.
Ethan saw the recognition arrive in his eyes.
"Don't," Ethan whispered.
Fenrir did not move closer. He simply stared at the man he had lost, then at the hand Ethan had pressed against his abdomen.
The second heartbeat answered his wolf.
