"The Alpha Who Carried His Enemy's Baby" Chapter 3 — Three Buttons, One Terrible Secret
By noon, the Northern Palace knew three things.
The king had returned with the vanished war commander.
A silver-eared child was eating strawberries in the royal nursery.
And every adviser who had ever spoken Ethan Ravenscroft's name with contempt had suddenly discovered an urgent reason to be elsewhere.
Ethan did not care about any of it. He wanted Leo.
He found his son seated on a rug beside a mountain of wooden blocks, explaining military strategy to a bewildered royal nurse. Leo's little tail wagged so hard that the blocks trembled.
"Papa!"
Ethan dropped to his knees. Leo crashed into his arms, milk-scented and warm and gloriously alive.
"You left without telling me," Ethan said into his curls.
"I left a picture."
"That's not the same."
"I was helping."
"I know, sweetheart. But you frightened me."
Leo leaned back and studied him. "You look tired again."
"I'm fine."
"You always say that when you're not fine."
Ethan closed his eyes. His son had inherited far too much intelligence from both parents.
"Did the big wolf hurt you?" he asked.
Leo shook his head. "He gave me toast cut into stars. And he didn't shout. Except at a man who tried to take my backpack."
Ethan looked up.
Fenrir stood in the doorway, watching them with an expression Ethan had never seen him wear in public. Not pride. Not possession. Something more fragile.
"The boy is safe," Fenrir said.
"He'll stay that way."
"Yes."
Leo reached toward the king. "Daddy, Papa needs a nap."
Ethan's face heated. "Leo."
"And his tummy is grumpy."
The silence that followed was so precise Ethan could hear the fire crackling in the hearth.
Fenrir's gaze flicked to him. Ethan stood, lifting Leo onto his hip despite the strain.
"We'll discuss this privately," Ethan said.
"Of course."
"And nobody takes him anywhere without asking me."
Fenrir nodded. "You have my word."
Ethan handed Leo to the nurse only after the boy agreed to stay and build a castle. Then he followed Fenrir down a corridor lined with portraits of rulers who had never learned the difference between loyalty and obedience.
The king's study had changed since Ethan last entered it. The walls were still paneled in dark redwood, but the heavy curtains had been drawn back. Sunlight poured through floor-to-ceiling windows onto the snow-covered pines beyond. A fire burned behind glass. On the desk stood a photograph Ethan had never expected to see: two young men in military uniforms, laughing after a training victory.
Fenrir had kept it.
Ethan turned the frame facedown.
He remembered the day it had been taken. Fenrir had been twenty-seven and already burdened with royal duties. Ethan had beaten him in a war-game exercise by using the palace kitchens as an imaginary supply route. Fenrir had complained that no honorable commander would invade through a bakery. Ethan had replied that a hungry army cared little for honor.

The photographer had caught Fenrir laughing at that exact moment. Ethan had kept a copy in his locker until the night he fled. Seeing it here, carefully dusted, felt like finding a door he had nailed shut from the other side.
He refused to let nostalgia decide what happened to Leo.
"Why did you bring my son into this palace?"
"Because he came here alone and needed protection."
"You could have called me."
"I had no number."
"You found my address quickly enough."
"Through his gift. Not through a surveillance order."
Ethan crossed the room. "Do you expect me to thank you for that distinction?"
"No. I expect you to listen."
"That's what you always expect."
Fenrir planted both hands on the desk. "The council has already heard rumors. If they learn Leo is mine, they'll try to use him against us. I can protect him here."
"And when they decide I have no right to raise a royal heir?"
"They won't."
"You can't promise that. You couldn't promise it four years ago."
Fenrir's wolf ears flattened. "I was not king enough then."
"You were king enough to let me disappear."
Ethan seized Fenrir's tie. The old gesture came as naturally as breathing. They had fought shoulder to shoulder as young soldiers; they had fought each other over tactics, promotions, and the boundaries neither dared name. Fenrir had always been stronger. Ethan had always been faster.
"Listen carefully," Ethan said. "Leo is not a crown, a weapon, or an heirloom. He is my son."
"I know."
"Then stop looking at him like you've discovered something that belongs to you."
Fenrir's expression sharpened. "I look at him and see three years I can never get back."
Ethan's grip faltered.
Fenrir caught his wrist as Ethan stumbled against the desk. It was a reflex, meant to steady him. Ethan braced a palm against the polished wood and pulled away too quickly.
The edge of his white shirt snagged on a carved brass corner.
Pop.
One button struck the floor.
Pop. Pop.
Two more bounced across the redwood boards.
The fabric parted at his middle.
Beneath it, unmistakable in the bright winter sunlight, was the rounded curve of a pregnant abdomen.
Ethan froze.
For one dreadful second, he was no longer a decorated commander or the man who had survived four years alone. He was simply someone whose most guarded secret had been torn into the open.
He dragged the shirt closed with both hands.
"Don't look at me."
Fenrir had gone utterly still.
The room seemed to tilt around him. He remembered Leo's newborn cry inside the child's memory. He remembered the border house months earlier, the one night Ethan had returned to him voluntarily, the tenderness that had briefly outlived their anger. He remembered waking to an empty bed and a note that said only: This changes nothing.
It had changed everything.

"Ethan," he said.
"Don't."
"Is it mine?"
Ethan stared at him with open fury. "You think I'd come here and let you question my honor?"
"No." Fenrir swallowed. "I think I am terrified of hoping."
The answer took the fight out of Ethan for half a breath.
Fenrir stepped back, giving him room. "You don't owe me an explanation this minute. You don't owe me proof. But you need a physician. Your scent is unstable, and you nearly collapsed in the rain."
"I know what I need."
"Then tell me."
Ethan's fingers trembled as he tried to fasten the surviving buttons. He could not make them meet. Rage rose in his throat—not at the shirt, not even at Fenrir, but at a body that had betrayed every certainty he once possessed.
"I need you to stop treating me like I broke," he said.
Fenrir's face changed. "You didn't break."
"Your people think I did."
"Then my people will learn otherwise."
"You can't fix this with an order."
"I know."
Ethan looked at him. "Do you?"
Fenrir unfastened his own black jacket and placed it on the desk between them. "Wear this if you want. Or don't. I won't decide for you."
Ethan took the jacket after a long silence. It was warm from Fenrir's body, familiar with cedar smoke and winter air. He hated the relief that came with putting it around his shoulders.
Fenrir's gaze dropped once more to the curve beneath the loose fabric. His hand lifted, stopped, and lowered again.
"May I?" he asked.
Ethan shook his head.
Fenrir withdrew at once.
The refusal should have ended the moment. Instead Ethan watched the king's hand tremble. Fenrir Blackthorne, who could stare down armies without blinking, was afraid to touch him.
"You really didn't know," Ethan said.
"I suspected in the rain. I didn't know."
"I wasn't going to tell you."
"I understand."
"No. You don't."
"Then help me understand when you're ready."
Ethan shut his eyes. He could hear the palace clock and the faint shouts of soldiers training in the courtyard. For four years, he had told himself that returning here would mean surrender.
Yet Fenrir stood in front of him without reaching, ordering, or claiming.
Ethan caught his hand.
Fenrir looked startled.
"One moment," Ethan warned.
He guided Fenrir's palm to the place where the child had been moving all morning.
Warmth passed between them.
A small, unmistakable kick met Fenrir's hand.
Fenrir's breath left him. He bowed his head, not in conquest but in wonder.
"Hello," he whispered to the life beneath Ethan's heart.
Ethan's eyes stung. He pulled the jacket tighter with his free hand but did not let go.
Then something answered from deep within him.
A pulse of silver light crossed the room. The wolf crest above the fireplace flared. Every pane of glass shuddered in its frame.
Outside, the snow fell from the branches in a single violent wave.
Fenrir lifted his head.
He knew that power.
It was royal. Ancient. And far stronger than it should have been in an unborn child.
The windows shook again.
A hairline crack appeared across the largest pane.
Ethan stared at the silver light beneath his skin.
"Fenrir," he whispered, "what is happening to our baby?"
