"The Alpha Who Carried His Enemy's Baby" Chapter 7 — The Brother He Was Forbidden to Love
By morning, every surviving record of Ethan's adoption had vanished from the palace archive.
The registrar claimed a plumbing accident had flooded the lower vault. Fenrir looked at the perfectly dry shelves and dismissed him before he finished the lie.
Ethan stood at the archive table, a slim leather case open before him. Inside lay the few documents he had kept from his childhood: his father's service medal, a faded photograph, and a letter with the royal crest.
“My father died protecting yours,” Ethan said. “That much is true.”
Fenrir nodded.
“The rest?”
Fenrir did not answer quickly enough.
Ethan closed the case. “What do you know?”
Fenrir had faced assassins without fear. He had walked into rebellions knowing he might not return. But Ethan's steady gaze made the floor seem suddenly uncertain.
“Varrick altered the adoption registry,” Fenrir said. “The household decree called you my brother. The blood registry never did.”
“Because we were never related.”
“No.”
“And you knew?”
“I found the original record after you disappeared.”
“Four years ago.”
“Yes.”
Ethan took one step back. “You let me believe the council could destroy us with a blood scandal.”
“I was trying to find you first.”
“You could have released the truth.”
“Varrick controlled the registrars. I needed proof that would survive a tribunal.”
“Did you ever consider telling me?”
“I couldn't reach you.”
Ethan's expression sharpened. “You found me at the border six months ago.”
Fenrir's silence answered him.
The secret meeting returned to both of them in fragments: a mountain inn, snow beating against the shutters, Ethan's hand on Fenrir's chest, the terrible tenderness of knowing they would separate again. They had agreed to meet without guards or promises. Fenrir had held the truth in his mouth and swallowed it.
“Were you protecting me,” Ethan asked, “or protecting your throne?”
Fenrir looked at the crest carved into the archive wall. For years it had seemed inseparable from his body, as if the crown had grown through bone and skin.
“I was afraid,” he said.
Ethan laughed without joy. “The great Black Wolf King?”
“Afraid that if I told you everything, you'd see how badly I'd failed you. Afraid you'd leave before I could make it right.”
“So you kept one more thing from me.”
“Yes.”
Ethan turned toward the door. Fenrir did not stop him.
The silence was worse than a fight.
Ethan walked through the palace until he reached the old training gallery. Sunlight spilled across the empty practice floor. He remembered being eleven, arriving with a trunk of secondhand clothes after his father died. Fenrir had been older, taller, and impossible to impress.
The first time Ethan challenged him, Fenrir had won in less than a minute.
The second time, Ethan lasted three.
By winter they were fighting shoulder to shoulder against boys who mocked the orphan from the servants' quarters. The king had called Ethan a son of the house, but the two boys had always known they came from different families. Later, when friendship grew into something neither could name, the council had weaponized the word brother until it became a threat.

Ethan had hated the lie. He hated even more that Fenrir had tried to defeat it alone.
“Commander?”
Captain Rook stood at the entrance, holding a sealed envelope.
“This was left in the old armory,” he said. “Addressed to you. The handwriting matches your father's service records.”
Inside was a copy of the original adoption agreement. It named Ethan's father, Tomas Ravenscroft, as a royal deputy commander. It explicitly stated that Ethan was a ward of the household, not a blood descendant or legal sibling of Fenrir.
Beneath it lay a second page bearing Varrick's signature. The words had been altered to read adopted royal son, equal in family status to the heir.
“Why change it?” Ethan asked.
Rook hesitated. “A ward can leave. A royal son can be bound by dynastic statutes.”
Ethan's fingers tightened around the paper.
The council had not merely tried to shame them. It had prepared the legal machinery to keep him inside the palace long before he became an Omega.
Rook had one more piece of information before Ethan left the gallery. The altered registry had not been filed at the time of the adoption. Its ink was newer. The amendment had been made the year Ethan turned eighteen, shortly after his appointment to the officer corps.
That timing disturbed Ethan more than the forgery itself.
At eighteen, he had begun winning campaigns that older generals could not finish. He had been promoted on merit and had spent the next decade building loyalty among soldiers who cared little for council politics. He remembered Varrick watching from the gallery at his first command ceremony, smiling as if proud.
“He knew I would become a problem,” Ethan said.
“Or he knew something about your blood,” Rook replied.
Ethan glanced at the old photograph in his case. His father stood beside the late king, both covered in snow, both laughing at something outside the frame. Tomas Ravenscroft had always been described as loyal, ordinary, expendable. Ethan had accepted those words because they were repeated by powerful men.
He wondered what else had been made to seem ordinary.
“Find the original medical examinations from my first enlistment,” he told Rook. “Not the copies in the palace. The field surgeon's records.”
“That surgeon retired to the eastern settlements.”
“Then send someone who remembers serving under me. Not someone the council can intimidate.”
Rook inclined his head. “You sound like my commander again.”
“I never stopped being your commander in my head.”
As Rook departed, Ethan felt the baby move. It was a small, undeniable flutter beneath his palm. He steadied himself against the gallery wall and waited for the sensation to pass.
This child had been conceived during a brief reunion neither he nor Fenrir had been brave enough to make permanent. Ethan had believed another separation would spare them both. Instead it had made another secret.
He was finished letting other people write his life in hidden ink.

Before leaving, he placed his father's medal around his neck. The metal was cold against his skin, but its weight steadied him. His father had taught him to read a battlefield by noticing what the enemy wanted hidden. For years Ethan had treated his own history as settled ground. Now he saw the gaps, the altered records, the conveniently lost witnesses. This was not simply a love story twisted by law. Someone had planned the trap long before he knew it existed.
And Ethan intended to find out why.
He took the papers to the empty royal chapel, where Fenrir was waiting beside the unlit ceremonial brazier. The king had removed his crown. Without it, he looked tired enough to be human.
“I should have told you at the border,” Fenrir said before Ethan spoke.
“Yes.”
“I can't undo that.”
“No.”
“What can I do?”
Ethan placed the forged record on the altar. “Stop deciding which truths I can bear.”
Fenrir read the altered clause, his face growing harder with each line.
“I'll have Varrick arrested.”
“Not yet. If he has allies, they'll destroy the evidence.”
“You're already planning a campaign.”
“I never stopped being a commander.”
Fenrir looked at him then, really looked, as though seeing the man beneath every title the council had tried to impose.
“Tell me the plan,” he said.
They spent the next hour mapping the council's influence. Ethan named old military contacts. Fenrir identified financial records and witnesses. Their arguments were fierce, their compromises reluctant, and their shared purpose almost painfully familiar.
When the plan was finished, Fenrir lifted a thin volume from the altar: the ancient decree governing royal mates.
“This is the instrument they used against you,” he said.
Ethan opened it. The language was colder than he remembered. It reduced a mate's freedom to permissions, possessions, and supervised movements.
Fenrir held the book over the brazier.
“Burning one copy won't change the law,” Ethan warned.
“I know. Tomorrow I'll begin repealing it.”
“Then why burn it?”
“Because you should see me reject it before I ask you to believe me again.”
Ethan took the candle from his hand and lit the pages himself.
Flames curled around the old seal. Fenrir stood beside him without trying to direct the gesture.
Ethan turned. “I am still angry with you.”
“You should be.”
“I may be angry tomorrow.”
“I'll be here tomorrow.”
Ethan reached for his collar and pulled him down into a kiss. It was an answer to longing, not forgiveness. When he stepped back, Fenrir did not follow.
“No more secrets,” Ethan said.
“No more.”
Something crackled in the brazier. A narrow metal capsule rolled from the burning book's spine and struck the stone floor.
Fenrir picked it up with a cloth. Inside was a letter in his father's handwriting, sealed with black wax.
To the sons of my household, it began. If this reaches you, the change in Ethan's blood was no accident.
