"The Alpha Who Carried His Enemy's Baby" Chapter 8 — The King on His Knees
The old king's letter contained three instructions.
Trust neither the council's physicians nor its genealogists.
Find the records beneath the northern tower.
And never let Elder Varrick learn that both royal bloodlines survived.
Ethan read the last sentence twice.
“Both?”
Fenrir stood beside him in the chapel, his face unreadable. “My father believed there was more than one line capable of carrying the old wolf's power.”
“Mine?”
“Perhaps. He didn't say.”
The letter offered no comfort, only the certainty that someone had known Ethan was in danger before the night of the coup.
By dawn, the Elder Council had summoned an extraordinary tribunal.
The throne chamber filled with clan leaders, officers, physicians, and representatives from the outer settlements. Banners hung from the vaulted ceiling. Sunlight poured through the high windows, making the polished floor shine like ice.
Ethan entered in a plain dark uniform. His pregnancy was visible beneath the fitted jacket, but he refused the ceremonial cloak offered to royal mates. Leo remained in a protected family gallery with Dr. Soren and two guards Ethan had chosen himself.
Fenrir waited beside the throne.
Elder Varrick opened the hearing without bowing.
“The kingdom faces a crisis of succession,” he announced. “A former commander, now classified Omega, has compromised the king's judgment and concealed an heir for years.”
Murmurs spread through the chamber.
“He has further obstructed the lawful transfer of the child to the Sanctum,” Varrick continued. “We therefore petition to strip Ethan Ravenscroft of all remaining military privileges and place the heir under council guardianship.”
Ethan felt the old rage rise, clean and familiar.
Varrick looked at his rounded stomach. “And any unborn heir must be registered immediately under the same protection.”
Fenrir's hand tightened on the arm of the throne.
Ethan spoke first.
“You've called it protection every time you've wanted to take something from me.”
Varrick raised a brow. “You are not recognized as a military officer.”
“Then you should have no trouble answering a civilian.”
A few officers concealed smiles.
Ethan placed the forged adoption record on the tribunal table. “Why did you change my father's agreement?”
Varrick glanced down, and for the first time his composure flickered.
“That document is unauthenticated.”
“Then call the surviving witnesses.”
“I will not have this hearing diverted.”
“Of course not,” Ethan said. “A lie is easier to defend when no one asks questions.”
Varrick turned to Fenrir. “Your Majesty, command your mate to be silent.”
The entire chamber held its breath.
Fenrir rose. The royal crown glittered in the sunlight, black silver set with a single pale stone. He removed it and placed it on the throne.
“No,” he said.
Varrick stared. “Your Majesty?”
“You will not use my authority to silence him.”
“The law—”
“If the law requires me to surrender my family, then the law is wrong.”
The words traveled through the chamber like a crack opening in winter ice.

Fenrir stepped down from the dais and stood beside Ethan, not in front of him.
“I will submit a repeal of the compulsory mate statutes,” he announced. “Effective immediately, no child of this kingdom may be removed from a parent without an independent finding of danger. No mate will be confined by status alone.”
Varrick's face reddened. “You would dismantle the foundations of the realm for one man?”
“For every person those foundations have crushed.”
Ethan looked at Fenrir, surprised despite himself. He had expected anger. He had expected threats. He had not expected the king to name the harm so plainly.
But the chamber was still watching him as if he were a rescued prisoner.
Ethan stepped forward.
“I don't need the king to give me my rank,” he said. “I earned it.”
He laid his old commander insignia on the table. “Under Article Seventeen of the Military Charter, I challenge the council's finding of unfitness. I request an open military review, with evidence and witnesses.”
Varrick smiled thinly. “A pregnant Omega intends to stand trial before the army?”
“Yes.” Ethan met his eyes. “And I intend to win.”
Captain Rook stepped forward from the Black Guard. “I will testify to Commander Ravenscroft's service.”
Another officer followed. Then a third.
By the time the chamber quieted, more than twenty soldiers had volunteered to testify.
Varrick withdrew with the other elders, promising to reconvene the tribunal at first light.
That night, Ethan stood in his old quarters before a mirror. The dark military uniform had been altered to fit his changing body. Its insignia had been cleaned, and the silver thread on the cuffs still caught the light.
Fenrir entered carrying a folded commander's cloak.
“Rook found it in storage,” he said.
“I thought they burned everything.”
“Not everything.”
Ethan touched the worn fabric. It smelled faintly of cedar and old leather.
Fenrir lowered himself onto one knee to fasten the cloak's clasp at Ethan's waist. The gesture was practical, but it still startled Ethan. This was the man who had once made generals tremble by merely lifting a finger.
“You don't have to kneel,” Ethan said.
“I know.”
“Then why?”
“Because you spent years being told that standing beside me meant standing below me.” Fenrir secured the clasp and looked up. “I want you to know I never believed it.”
Ethan's throat tightened.
“You did act as though you believed it,” he said.
“I know.”
Fenrir rose only when Ethan offered his hand. They stood close, their reflections side by side in the mirror: a king without his crown and a commander whose body carried a future neither had imagined.
“I don't know whether I can forgive everything,” Ethan said.
“I'm not asking tonight.”
Ethan touched Fenrir's face. He had imagined doing so a hundred times in the years apart, always with anger, always with longing.
He kissed him. Fenrir answered carefully, his hands resting at Ethan's waist, and Ethan drew him closer. When they parted, the silence between them felt less like an accusation and more like a place where something new might grow.

A soft knock came at the door.
Leo stood in his pajamas, one ear drooping with sleep. “Are you two being nice?”
“We're trying,” Ethan said.
“Good.” Leo lifted his arms. “Story.”
Fenrir picked him up, and together they read a book about a stubborn little wolf who insisted on climbing the highest mountain. Leo declared that the wolf should have taken a bus.
For a few minutes, the palace was simply a home.
Before the morning hearing, Ethan asked to inspect the arena himself. Rook met him at the western gate with a roster of witnesses and a map of the examination stations. The review would measure judgment, command skill, and field knowledge rather than physical combat. Ethan had insisted on that distinction. He would not allow the council to turn pregnancy into a spectacle or pretend that a general's worth depended on how hard he could strike.
“The northern companies have submitted their statements,” Rook said. “Every captain who served under you signed.”
“Even Dain?”
“Especially Dain. He wrote six pages about the avalanche rescue.”
Ethan remembered that winter: thirty soldiers trapped beyond a broken bridge, a blizzard advancing, no chance of reinforcements. He had chosen an impossible route through the cliffs and brought them home. He remembered the cold more clearly than the praise.
“What about the examiner?”
“Appointed by the charter, not the council. He served before Varrick's rise.”
“Good.”
Across the arena, Fenrir stood speaking to the civilian delegates. He had spent the night reviewing petitions from Omegas who had been denied travel permits, employment, and custody of their children. His desk had filled with names. Each represented a life constrained by the same laws Ethan had fled.
Ethan watched him hand the petitions to the royal clerk, demanding they be entered into the public record.
It was not enough. It was a beginning.
Leo appeared at the gallery railing wearing a little blue scarf. He waved with both hands, his silver ears bouncing.
“Papa! Win your homework!”
Ethan grinned and saluted. “I'll do my best.”
Fenrir did not wave until Ethan caught his eye. Then he raised two fingers in the old soldiers' signal: I have your back.
Ethan answered with the matching sign: Hold your position.
For once, Fenrir obeyed.
At sunrise, the military tribunal assembled in the training arena. Ethan walked into the center with his cloak moving behind him. Fenrir watched from the royal gallery, resisting every instinct to follow.
Ethan had asked him not to intervene. This battle belonged to the commander.
The chief examiner raised a silver staff. “Ethan Ravenscroft, do you affirm that you enter this review of your own free will?”
“I do.”
The staff touched the ground.
A sharp pulse of ancient magic crossed the arena. Ethan stopped breathing.
Deep inside his body, the unborn child answered.
The stones beneath his boots glowed with a second pattern of royal silver—one no physician had recorded, and no living Alpha should have been able to produce.
The entire arena began to shake.
From the council gallery, Varrick whispered a single word.
“Impossible.”
