"My Maid’s Daughter Gave Me a Christmas Gift." Chapter 3
The Brother I Had Stopped Looking For
I pushed my chair back too hard.
Nora flinched at the sound.
I stopped with my hands on the table.
"Afterward?"
"Three nights after the story appeared in the paper."
For four years, I had pictured Luca leaving the city in a car. Angry, defiant, taking whatever life he had chosen over us.
Three nights later, he had still been here.
"How badly was he hurt?"
"A cut above his eye. Blood on his shirt. He said most of it wasn't his, but he wouldn't let me call anyone."
"What did he tell you?"
"That he had to go away. That people might ask about him."
She sat down again, as though her knees had finally given up.
"He wanted me to take Maisie to my aunt in Indiana. He left money for tickets. I was furious. I thought he was in trouble and trying to disappear before I could ask him anything."
"Did he say where he was going?"
"West. Nothing more."
I reached for my phone and called Caleb.
"Bring the original search file downstairs. Not the summary. Everything."
Nora watched me put the phone away.
"He left his coat," she said. "There was a blanket in my car, and I made him take it because it was freezing. His coat was wet. I kept thinking he'd come back for it."
Her mouth trembled once before she pressed it still.
"The scarf?"
"Torn. He gave me the loose piece because Maisie was pulling at it. I put it in the tin with the key."
I picked up the key by its plain brass bow.
"Did he say what this opens?"
"A room near the river. He said if anyone came for it, I should make them tell me his real name first."
"Anyone?"
"He said you might come."
I closed my fingers around the metal.
Outside the breakfast room, Maisie laughed. Something clattered, followed by Mrs. Porter's patient voice telling her that a saucepan wasn't a Christmas bell.
My brother had expected me to come.
I had stayed in this house and waited for him to apologize.
"Why didn't he call?"
Nora lifted her eyes.
"He did."
"Not me."
"He said he called you."
I remembered the final argument in my father's office. Luca arriving without an appointment. His face gray with exhaustion. Our father telling him to sit down.
He had looked at me instead.
Come outside with me. Ten minutes. Please.
I had been preparing for a meeting that could not wait. Or so I had told him.
There had been a call the next afternoon. I had let it go to voicemail.
By evening, our father had shown me transfer records and said Luca had emptied an account.
"I need to get something," Nora said.
I looked at her.
"It's in my locker. I brought the tin to keep Maisie occupied while I worked. That's how she found everything. There's something else in it."

"A letter?"
She nodded.
I wanted to demand why she hadn't started with that.
Instead, I moved my chair out of her way.
While she was gone, Caleb arrived with a thick folder and a tablet.
"Original reports," he said. "I've asked for the call records from the old archive."
"Why did we stop searching?"
He set down the folder.
"Your father produced proof Luca had crossed into Canada."
"Proof you verified?"
His face changed.
"Photographs. Hotel charges. A statement from a border contact."
"Verified by you?"
Caleb held my gaze.
"No. By your father's men. You told me to close the active search and keep a watch on his accounts."
I remembered signing the instruction. Luca was alive. Luca was spending our money. Luca would return when he wanted something.
Our father had made it sound so familiar that believing him felt like recognizing my brother.
I opened the folder.
The hotel photograph showed a man outside a glass doorway. Dark hair. Similar height. His face turned away.
Four years earlier, I had looked at it for less than a minute.
"He broke his right wrist at sixteen," I said.
"I remember."
"He never carried a heavy bag in that hand afterward."
The man in the picture held a suitcase in his right hand.
It proved nothing on its own.
It should have made me ask.
Nora returned carrying a biscuit tin with a faded robin on the lid. She placed it beside the search file and took out a cream envelope.
My first name was written across the front.
I knew the handwriting before she pushed it toward me.
"He left it in the coat," she said. "I didn't find it until I packed his things away."
"You never opened it?"
"I wanted to. More than once."
"Why didn't you?"
"Because it was the last thing he asked someone to give you. I kept thinking I should let him have that."
I broke the seal.
The sheet inside had been folded twice. A small brown stain marked one corner.
Gabriel,
I don't know what Father has told you. I know you believe him. I used to think that meant you didn't love me, but I don't believe that anymore. I think it's easier for you to be angry with me than afraid of him.
I stopped reading.
Caleb looked away.
You asked what I did with the Northstar money. I moved it before Hale could get it. There are families whose names cannot go into a police report or a newspaper. Mother knew about them. Father knows too, whatever he tells you.
The key is for the blue service door at the old Northstar warehouse by the river. The address is on the card beneath this letter. There are copies there. Read them before you decide what I am.
Nora doesn't know about the accounts. Don't question her like she's one of Father's employees. She has already had enough people frighten her.

I glanced at Nora. She was staring at the empty tin.
I read the last paragraph.
If I don't make it back, check the departures Father arranged. Ask who bought the ticket. Ask whose name was printed on it. And if someone tells you I chose to leave you, remember I asked you to come outside with me first.
Your brother,
Luca
For several seconds, I could hear nothing except the clock.
There was an address card underneath. An old warehouse on the river. Nora had kept the key, the letter, and the piece of scarf together for four years.
I set them down carefully.
"Hale was dead before Luca vanished," I said.
Caleb frowned. "No. Hale died the following spring. Heart attack at his place in Florida."
I had been remembering the year we stopped doing business with him. Two separate dates had become one in my mind, filed among things I had left to my father.
"Check that report too," I said.
Caleb made a note.
Nora leaned forward.
"What did he say about us?"
I handed her the letter.
She read it slowly. When she reached the line about frightening her, she covered her mouth with her fingers.
"He knew," she whispered.
"Knew what?"
"That I was scared. I thought I'd hidden it."
She blinked hard, folded the page along its old creases, and returned it to me.
Caleb's tablet sounded.
He read the message and stepped closer.
"The travel archive is still intact. Your father's office bought a ticket from Chicago to Denver the morning after Luca came to Nora's apartment. Private expense account."
"Passenger?"
"Leo Mercer."
Nora drew in a sharp breath.
Caleb placed the tablet on the table. A scanned receipt filled the screen. Beneath it was a copy of a temporary identity document.
Luca's photograph.
A stranger's name.
"There's an authorization attached," Caleb said.
"Show me."
He swiped to the next page.
My father's signature sat at the bottom of a short instruction to his personal assistant. Arrange departure. Pay cash where possible. Notify no other family members.
I read it twice.
The search in Canada had begun two days later.
My father had watched me send men in the wrong direction. He had sat across from me at dinner while I asked whether anyone had heard from Luca. He had grown old in this house and let me believe my brother wanted nothing to do with us.
Something hot rose behind my ribs.
Caleb reached toward the tablet, but I put my hand flat beside it.
"Who still has his private papers?"
"His executor. Arthur Bell."
I called Arthur myself.
He answered on the fifth ring, holiday music playing somewhere behind him.
"Gabriel. Merry Christmas. Is everything all right?"
"You arranged my father's estate. Did he leave anything for me concerning Luca?"
The music became muffled. A door shut.
"What have you found?" Arthur asked.
I looked at Caleb.
"A train ticket."
Arthur exhaled.
"There is a sealed statement. Your father instructed me to release it if Luca contacted you, or if you uncovered the departure arrangements independently."
My grip tightened around the phone.
"You have had it for eight months."
"Those were his instructions."
"Send it. Now."
He began to say something about the original. I ended the call.
Nora stood beside me while we waited. Neither of us pretended to be interested in the tea Mrs. Porter brought to the doorway.
When the email arrived, I opened the attachment on Caleb's tablet.
Three pages. Signed and witnessed six weeks before my father's death.
At the top of the first page, in his own handwriting, were the words he had never said to my face.
Gabriel,
Your brother did not abandon this family. I sent him away.
