"My Maid’s Daughter Gave Me a Christmas Gift." Chapter 5
The Blue Door
Nora came down the steps of a brick apartment building wearing a gray coat and a blue knitted hat. Through the ground-floor window, I could see Maisie waving with both hands while a woman beside her held a mug.
I raised my hand.
Maisie pressed her palm against the glass.
Nora opened the car door before my driver could reach it.
"She's making cookies with Denise," she said, settling into the back seat beside me. "Apparently Christmas Eve cookies taste different from regular ones."
"Do they?"
"They do if you're allowed to put twice as much frosting on them."
She pulled off her gloves and folded them together.
I had seen her do the same thing with the paper towel. Give her hands a small job so they wouldn't reveal what she was feeling.
Caleb drove. Another car followed us toward the river, far enough behind that Nora didn't have to watch it in the side mirror.
"You don't have to stay if you change your mind," I said.
"Neither do you."
I looked at her.
She kept her gaze on the window, but one corner of her mouth moved.
"He used to say you always needed an exit before you could walk into a room."
"He talked about me that much?"
"More when he was worried."
The warehouse stood beyond a chain-link fence, its upper windows dark. Old lettering had left pale rectangles on the brick where the Northstar sign had once been mounted.
Caleb parked by the service entrance.
The blue door was exactly where the address card said it would be.
While his men checked the outside, Nora stood beside me under the narrow overhang. Snow had collected in her hair.
"He said he could hear trains from here," she said.
Somewhere beyond the buildings, a freight horn sounded.
She looked toward it before turning back to the door.
The key resisted halfway into the lock. Caleb took a small bottle from his pocket, worked a little lubricant into the mechanism, and handed it back.
I tried again.
This time, it turned.
The building smelled of cold concrete and old wood. Our footsteps sounded too loud. A row of empty loading bays stretched into the dark, with an office raised above them behind dusty glass.
Caleb went first. He returned a few minutes later and waved us forward.
"No one here. The office door was unlocked."
On the desk sat a lamp with a cracked shade. Beside it lay a mug containing a pencil and two dried-out pens.
Nora stopped at the doorway.
"That's his."
The mug had a picture of a bear wearing sunglasses.
"I bought it at a thrift store," she said. "He kept stealing mine."
She touched the handle without picking it up.
I looked around the room again. My brother had sat here. He had drunk coffee while deciding what to save, what to carry, whom to trust.

On the wall above the desk, someone had drawn a crescent moon in pencil.
I remembered finding that same mark under the lid of our mother's sewing box. Luca had put it there when he was little, so she would have something to look at when he was at school.
"There's a cabinet," Caleb said.
He crouched beside it and slid open a low drawer.
A flat metal document box filled most of the space. It wasn't locked. Inside, beneath a layer of discolored plastic, were folders, a notebook, and another envelope bearing my name.
I recognized Luca's handwriting.
This time, I opened the envelope immediately.
Gabriel,
I came back here after I left Nora's apartment. Father says he can stop Hale coming after her if I leave. I don't know how much of that is true. I know what happened outside this building, and I can't ask her to take that risk.
The originals are divided between people who helped Mother. These copies are enough to show what the accounts were for. Don't release the names. They belong to people who were promised a chance to start over.
I looked through the first folder.
A woman and two children moved out of Chicago. Rent paid for three months. A mechanic given enough to take a job in another state. A hospital bill settled through a company I recognized from our mother's old correspondence.
Small, practical rescues, hidden among larger payments that nobody in our family would have questioned.
I had approved some of those transfers without knowing what they meant.
Nora read a page beside me.
"He wasn't taking money," she said.
"No."
"I knew he wasn't."
She said it quietly. I couldn't have resented her certainty if I had tried.
I returned to the letter.
Hale kept a second set of records through Daniel Rusk, his office manager. Father thinks he can buy them back. If he tells you this is settled, ask to see the records destroyed. Don't accept his word the way I did.
Caleb copied Rusk's name into his phone.
The final paragraph had been written more slowly, the ink heavier in places.
I'm going west to a clinic Dr. Samuel Ortiz recommended. He treated my chest pain last month. I didn't tell you because I was tired of being the person you expected to fail at something. That wasn't fair to either of us.
Bellweather Community Clinic. Outside Portland. Father doesn't know that part. If I can write again, I will.
On the back was a number.
I called it before I reached the end of the page.
Disconnected.
Nora watched my face.
"An old number," I said.
"Four years is a long time."
Caleb was already searching the clinic name.
I set down the phone and read the last two lines.
Tell Nora I meant to come back for my coat.
And bring that ridiculous reindeer if you ever come looking. I left it in Mother's kitchen because you said it didn't belong in your office.

I sat down in the chair.
Nora came closer.
"What is it?"
I handed her the page and pointed.
She read the lines. Her eyes filled, but she gave a short, incredulous laugh.
"He told me about the cuff link."
"He told everyone about the cuff link."
I could hear him laughing. My father's fury. My own warning that one day Luca would take a joke too far.
I had forgotten how often the house had been loud when he lived in it.
Nora sat on the edge of the desk.
"He bought Maisie a rabbit," she said. "One ear was shorter than the other. He said the imperfect ones needed homes too."
I looked at the repaired star in my memory.
"Does she still have it?"
"She sleeps with it. I had to put a new face on it last summer."
Caleb lowered his phone.
"Bellweather closed last year. Ortiz runs a small clinic in Willow Creek now. Same part of Oregon. There's a current office number."
I stood so quickly the chair rolled into the cabinet.
"Call."
"They're closed for the holiday. There's an answering service."
"Leave a number. Tell them it's his patient's brother. Leo Mercer. Luca Marchetti. Whichever name they know."
Caleb stepped into the corridor.
Nora and I remained beside the desk.
Through the window, the river reflected a row of yellow lights.
"Chest pain," I said.
She nodded.
"Did you know?"
"I knew he got tired. Sometimes he had to sit down after carrying groceries upstairs. He said he wasn't sleeping."
"He said the same thing to me."
I remembered snapping at him to get some rest before coming into another meeting unprepared.
Nora drew the mug toward her.
"He didn't like people fussing."
"There's a difference between fussing and noticing."
She didn't try to make that easier for me.
Caleb returned. He had left the message. There was nothing to do now except wait.
We packed the papers carefully. Caleb photographed where each folder had been stored, and I put the letter inside my coat.
I asked Nora if she wanted the mug.
"Not yet," she said.
She put it back beside the lamp.
We were at the blue door when Caleb's phone rang.
He answered, listened, then held it out to me.
"Dr. Ortiz."
I took the phone.
"This is Gabriel Marchetti."
"You've been asking about Leo Mercer."
The man's voice was cautious.
"My brother. His name is Luca. He came to you four years ago."
"I need to be careful about what I discuss."
"I understand. I don't want his records. I want you to tell him I'm looking for him."
Nora had stopped beside the car. Her eyes never left my face.
Ortiz asked for my number, then repeated it back.
"I'll pass on your message."
The words nearly went past me.
Then I gripped the phone with both hands.
"You can pass it on?"
A pause.
"Yes, Mr. Marchetti. Leo is alive."
