"The Coldhearted Billionaire Took Orders from My Little Girl." Chapter 2
The Man in the Photograph
"Daniel was an electrician," Elena said. "He had keys for buildings all over Brooklyn. I used to complain that his pockets sounded like a hardware store."
Adrian waited.
She stood beside the tray, rubbing the place where the cold glass had dampened her uniform.
"But that one was different. He kept it in his desk at home. He told me he'd found it behind an electrical panel at a warehouse."
"Which warehouse?"
"Near the waterfront. I don't remember the address."
Mia tugged her mother's skirt.
"Was it Daddy's?"
Elena crouched immediately.
"We don't know yet, sweetheart."
"Can I have my crayon?"
Adrian retrieved the orange crayon from beneath his chair.
Mia accepted it with the relief of someone whose actual emergency had finally received attention.
"Rosa's making little sandwiches," Elena told her. "Will you ask her to save me one?"
"Two. You eat the edges."
She hurried away.
Elena watched until Rosa appeared at the end of the corridor and took the small hand reaching for hers.
Only then did she turn back.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make this strange."
"You didn't put a key inside my furniture."
He knelt beside the desk and ran his fingers over the carved panel.
One wooden flower moved under pressure.
A compartment opened beneath the center drawer.
He stared at it.
He had owned this desk for eleven years.
"Did you know that was there?" Elena asked.
"Apparently not."
Inside was an empty felt-lined recess. At its deepest edge, a strip of paper lay wedged behind a wooden lip. He could see it, but his fingers could not reach it.
He left the panel open and stood.
"When did your husband find his key?"
"He mentioned the warehouse about eight years ago. We weren't married yet."
Adrian checked the number again.
"My father used that building twelve years ago."
Elena looked up sharply.
"Your father?"
"Possibly. I need to make a call."
He telephoned the bank, expecting a correction, an apology, some ordinary clerical explanation.
Instead, after several transfers, his father's former account manager asked him to come in with identification and the key.
Box 417 had never been closed.
Someone had continued paying the annual fee.
Adrian ended the call.
Elena had moved toward the door.
"I'll leave you to it."
"Come with me."
She turned.
"To the bank?"
"You may recognize something."
Her eyes flicked toward the corridor.
"I can't just leave Mia."
"Then we'll ask Rosa whether she can stay with her. Ask, Elena. I'm not suggesting we abandon your child in a cupboard."
A tiny crease appeared between her eyebrows.
"You say things like that with a very straight face."
"It helps in negotiations."
She looked at the key again.
"All right. But I need to change."
Twenty minutes later, she came downstairs wearing jeans, low boots, and a cream sweater beneath an old wool coat.

Without the uniform, there was nothing to tell a stranger why she was in his house.
Adrian noticed that more than he should have.
In the car, she kept her bag on her knees.
"Did you work for my father?" he asked.
"No. I knew his name. Everyone knew the company. But Daniel never said he'd met him."
"Did he often keep things from you?"
Her face closed.
Adrian heard the question again as she must have heard it.
"That came out badly."
"Yes."
"I meant whether his work was something you discussed."
She looked out the window for a moment.
"He told me when clients refused to pay. He told me when somebody's grandmother fed him three lunches because she thought he was too thin. I thought he told me most things."
Adrian said nothing.
"Apparently that wasn't your question either," she added.
"It's the one I should have asked."
She turned back toward him.
The driver stopped at a light. For several seconds, neither looked away.
At the bank, the manager greeted Adrian by name and led them through a sequence of doors.
Elena walked beside him without touching his arm. When the manager referred to her as Mrs. Moretti, she stopped.
"Rossi," she corrected. "Elena Rossi."
Adrian felt an unreasonable flicker of disappointment.
The manager apologized and continued.
After the identification checks and paperwork, they were left in a private room with the metal box between them.
Adrian lifted the lid.
A photograph. An inspection report. A small digital recorder in a padded sleeve.
Elena reached for the photograph first.
"That's Daniel."
He stood beside an electrical cabinet, sleeves rolled to his elbows, a toolbox at his feet. Vittorio stood next to him. Gabriel Moretti leaned against a workbench, and Julian Mercer held a folder near the edge of the frame.
Adrian named them.
"Your father, your uncle, and his lawyer," Elena repeated.
Her thumb rested beneath Daniel's face.
"He looks so young."
On the back, someone had written a date twelve years earlier.
"Four years," she whispered.
"What?"
"Four years before he told me about the warehouse."
She laid the picture down with exaggerated care.
The inspection report bore Daniel's signature. Several items had been crossed out in red. Beside them, in Vittorio's handwriting, was one word.
Overruled.
"Your father changed his report?"
"I don't know."
"But that's his handwriting."
"I recognize the handwriting. I don't yet know what it means."
The edge in his voice made her withdraw her hand.
Adrian put the report down.
"I'm not angry with you."
"You sound angry with someone."
He almost denied it.
Instead he picked up the recorder.
The bank manager provided batteries. The screen flickered awake, displaying a single file.
Adrian pressed play.
A chair scraped. Someone cleared his throat.
Then his father spoke.
"If we're recording this, Daniel, keep the machine away from Gabriel's coffee."
Adrian's hand tightened around the device.

Eleven years since he had heard that voice outside his own memory.
"One spill," Gabriel complained. "A man makes one mistake."
Another man laughed softly.
Elena stopped breathing.
Daniel.
Adrian reached toward the button.
She caught his wrist.
"Please don't."
Her fingers were cold. He let his hand settle on the table beneath hers.
The recording continued.
Daniel described an altered inspection and repeated invoices. Names he had never approved attached to work he had never signed off.
Gabriel interrupted. Julian asked a question.
Vittorio said, "Then the original report goes in. Repairs first. We can argue about the accounts afterward."
Elena leaned toward the little speaker.
Adrian watched a tear fall onto her sweater.
He pushed the water glass closer without speaking.
"What about Adrian?" Julian asked on the recording.
Adrian looked back at the machine.
His father exhaled.
"He's twenty-six. He already thinks kindness is what people ask for when they cannot win."
Adrian's jaw tightened.
Of course. Even here.
Even twelve years later, his father had found a way to evaluate him.
Then Vittorio added, "He learned that from me."
The room seemed to become smaller.
"You could tell him," Daniel said.
"I could tell him many things."
"That isn't the same as doing it."
Elena made a small, broken sound that might have been laughter.
Adrian paused the file.
He could not listen to another word yet.
For a while, there was only the hum of the ventilation.
"Daniel used to do that," Elena said at last.
"What?"
"Say the thing everyone else stepped around. It was incredibly annoying when he was right."
Adrian looked down at her hand. She had not noticed she was still holding his wrist.
"My father generally paid people to agree with him."
"Then this must have been expensive."
A breath escaped him. Almost a laugh.
She heard it and looked at him, startled.
Neither smiled for long.
When he resumed the recording, Vittorio was discussing where to keep the original papers.
"The bank copy stays here," his father said. "The workshop key goes in the desk until Gabriel has finished organizing the records."
"Your desk?" Julian asked.
"The lower compartment."
Gabriel laughed once.
"You mean the flower? Nobody's found that since Adrian was small enough to crawl underneath."
Adrian looked at Elena.
She sat straighter.
"The compartment," she said.
He remembered the narrow recess. The paper beyond his reach.
The first key had not been the only thing hidden under his desk.
