"The Coldhearted Billionaire Took Orders from My Little Girl." Chapter 4
The Letter He Left Behind
Elena unfolded the letter.
"Elena, I helped Vittorio Moretti establish the Harbor Fund after finding false invoices at Pier 8. I've kept its records and arranged repairs for neighborhood families ever since. I should have told you."
Her voice stopped.
Adrian remained crouched beside her, his shoulder against the cabinet.
She read the next lines silently before trying again.
"At first there were accounts to settle and other people's names to protect. Later, keeping quiet became easier than explaining why I'd kept quiet. That part is my fault."
Elena pressed her lips together.
"He knew," she said. "He knew exactly what I'd ask."
The letter shook in her hands.
Adrian reached behind him for the workshop stool. She sat without appearing to notice what he had done.
"There's more," she said.
He waited.
"The key I told you I'd found at the warehouse was one Vittorio lent me. I made a copy for my records. I returned his after the account review. The workshop key is different. Gabriel asked me to keep it when he started preparing the trust papers."
Adrian looked at the brass key in the cabinet door.
Two different keys. Two stories Elena had been left to assemble without the man who could explain them.
She kept reading.
"I met Adrian during the repairs. He was furious about the cost. We disagreed about almost everything. But when a worker cut his hand, Adrian drove him to the hospital himself and spent the rest of the afternoon pretending he hadn't."
Adrian remembered the blood on the passenger seat.
He had forgotten the worker's name.
He remembered Daniel standing beside the car with a clean towel.
"You knew him," Elena whispered.
"For an afternoon. I didn't connect the name."
"He remembered you."
She turned the page.
"If Adrian comes looking for these records, he may be angry. His father was good at making people feel as though they were being tested. You don't need to explain Vittorio to him. Just let him read the papers before everyone starts telling him what he ought to do."
Adrian looked away.
The sentence on the envelope had felt impossibly personal. Now he understood it. Daniel had imagined a widow and an estranged son sorting through a dead man's decisions. He had asked that neither be left outside.
He had not imagined this.
Elena in a cream sweater, sitting close enough to touch. Adrian knowing the exact shape her mouth made when she tried not to cry.
"When did he write it?" he asked.
"Four years ago."
Before Mia. Before the road accident. Before Elena had ever needed work in his house.
She lowered her eyes again.
"I want to tell you properly, over dinner, when there isn't a broken pipe or an emergency between us. If you found this instead, I'm sorry I waited. You deserved to hear it from me."

She folded the bottom of the page under her thumb.
"That's the end."
Adrian did not ask to see the last few lines she had chosen not to read aloud.
She stared at the bench across the room.
"All those evenings. I thought he was taking extra jobs. Sometimes I was angry because he came home late, and he'd say someone needed help."
Her laugh had no humor in it.
"Apparently he was telling the truth. Just not enough of it."
"You can be angry with him."
"I know."
Then, more quietly, "I don't know where to put it."
Adrian rested his forearms on his knees.
"I've had eleven years to work that out with my father. I can't recommend my method."
She looked at him.
"What was your method?"
"Work until I couldn't think."
"Did it help?"
"For several hours at a time."
She gave him a small, exhausted smile.
He would have stayed beside that stool all day for another one.
Instead he asked, "Do you want to leave?"
She shook her head.
"I want to know what he was doing."
They opened the ledger together.
There were heating repairs, emergency rent payments, invoices for a youth center, and names written in Daniel's narrow hand. No salary paid to him. No unexplained transfers into his household account.
Elena ran a finger down one page.
"Mrs. Alvarez. He fixed her boiler the winter I had the flu. He said she paid him in soup."
Adrian found the corresponding receipt.
"Apparently she did. The fund paid for the parts."
Elena touched her mouth.
For a moment, he thought she might laugh again.
Instead her face crumpled.
"He would have told me that part," she said. "He'd have told me about the soup."
Adrian got up immediately, then stopped, unsure what to do with his hands.
She caught his sleeve.
That was all the direction he needed.
He sat beside her on the edge of the workbench and let her lean against him.
At first it was only her forehead against his shoulder. Then her hand closed around his arm, and he put his palm between her shoulder blades.
She cried without trying to speak.
He watched the light move across the dusty floorboards and kept his hand where it was.
When she finally drew back, there was a damp mark on his shirt.
"I've ruined that."
"It's a shirt."
"It probably costs more than my refrigerator."
"Your refrigerator sounded expensive to repair."
She looked at him.
"You heard that?"
"The whole building heard it."
She laughed, and the sound eased something painful beneath his ribs.
He brushed a tear from her cheek before thinking better of it.
Her laughter faded.
His thumb remained beside her mouth for one suspended second.
Then his phone vibrated against the workbench.
He lowered his hand.
His assistant had found Julian Mercer.
Adrian answered, arranged a meeting for the following week, and explained where they were. Julian asked them to bring the document case and offered to organize copies for Elena.

"Why didn't you tell me about this?" Adrian asked.
The old lawyer was silent for a moment.
"I should have tried harder after Gabriel died. I sent letters through the company office. When you didn't answer, I let an old promise become an excuse."
Adrian remembered forwarding private estate correspondence to an administrator without reading it.
The thought did not absolve Julian. It made the years feel more wasted.
"We'll discuss that in person."
He ended the call.
Elena was putting the letter back in its envelope.
"Does he know everything?"
"Enough to stop making us guess."
They packed the records. One folder referred to the Harbor Community Trust and contained a list of waterfront properties. Adrian recognized several addresses his development team had discussed.
He closed it. There would be time for that with Julian.
Elena had already carried enough dead men's decisions for one morning.
At the house, Mia demanded an account of the treasure.
Elena sat on the kitchen chair and pulled her close.
"We found letters Daddy wrote. And pictures."
"For me?"
"Some things for you too. We'll look together after lunch."
Mia considered this satisfactory and ran to tell Rosa.
Elena stood to follow her, but Adrian caught sight of the envelope slipping from her coat pocket.
He picked it up.
Their fingers met when he returned it.
"Thank you for staying," she said.
"You asked me to."
"People don't always do what you ask."
He knew she did not mean the small things.
Across the kitchen, Mia was explaining that paper treasure was disappointing because you couldn't wear it.
Elena looked toward the sound. Adrian kept looking at Elena.
She noticed when she turned back.
Neither moved.
Then Rosa asked whether he would be home for dinner.
"Yes," he answered.
His hand was still warm from Elena's fingers.
