"The Coldhearted Billionaire Took Orders from My Little Girl." Chapter 5
His Favorite Interruption
By the following Thursday, Adrian knew which mornings Mia attended preschool, which afternoons her sitter collected her, and which two days she arrived at his house with Elena.
He had not requested a schedule.
He had simply started noticing the quiet when she wasn't there.
That was what he told himself when he opened the bottom right drawer of his desk and removed a box of crayons before an investor call.
"You have purple," Mia observed from the chair beside him.
"I have been advised that purple was missing."
"This is the good purple."
"I'm relieved."
She inspected the drawer.
"Can Rabbit stay here?"
"Rabbit may find the conversation dull."
"He likes it."
His screen chimed.
Adrian joined the call with a stuffed rabbit propped against his pen holder.
Nobody mentioned it.
At the end, Elena appeared in the doorway carrying Mia's coat.
"You have your own office now?" she asked her daughter.
"Just a drawer."
"That's how it starts."
Adrian shut his laptop.
Elena's hair was pinned up again, exposing the delicate curve behind her ear. He remembered it falling over her shoulder in the study. He had remembered it at particularly inconvenient moments all week.
"Did she disturb you?" Elena asked.
"Considerably less than the people I pay."
"He said a bad word," Mia reported.
Elena's eyebrows rose.
Adrian looked at the child.
"You agreed that was private."
"You said the man was an idiot."
"He was."
Elena pressed her lips together. He watched the effort fail.
Her laughter filled his study, and Adrian discovered he had been waiting for it since breakfast.
He left the office early that afternoon.
For three days, he had arrived home to find a polished kitchen and no one in it. Tonight he reached the doorway while Elena was helping Mia into her shoes.
"You're early," she said.
"It's my house."
"That doesn't answer the question."
"You didn't ask one."
She gave him a look that had become one of the better parts of his day.
Mia lifted her foot.
"It's stuck."
Adrian crouched and loosened the folded heel of her sock.
"Now."
She pushed her foot into the shoe.
"You did it."
"Another achievement for my obituary."
Elena touched his shoulder lightly.
"She'll ask what that means."
He looked up at her.
Her hand withdrew.
For a second, she seemed as conscious of the contact as he was.
Then Mia announced that she was hungry.
Adrian stood.
"Stay for dinner."
Elena glanced at the kitchen clock.
"Rosa's gone to her sister's."
"I own other sources of food."
"You mean delivery."
"I was trying to make it sound less desperate."
She smiled, but he saw the hesitation.
"Just dinner," he said. "You don't have to work through it."
Mia tugged her mother's hand.
"Please? He has the little forks."
Elena looked between them.
"One hour. She needs a bath before bed."

He ordered pasta from a restaurant that usually required reservations weeks in advance.
Mia ate three bites and asked for buttered noodles.
"Excellent choice," Elena told her. "Humble the chef."
Adrian went into the kitchen to find butter.
There were six refrigerated compartments.
He opened the wrong three.
Behind him, Elena began laughing.
"Don't say it," he warned.
"I haven't said anything."
"You're enjoying this loudly."
She came beside him and opened a shallow drawer.
"Here."
"How was I supposed to know there was a refrigerator drawer?"
"You paid for it."
"I paid for the kitchen. Someone else selected its hiding places."
She reached past him for a small pan. Her hip brushed his thigh.
He stepped back, but not far enough.
She looked up.
For a moment, the pan hung between them.
He could see a faint freckle near her lower lip. He wanted to touch it. More than that, he wanted to find out what she would do if he did.
"The stove," she said softly.
"What about it?"
"You're standing in front of it."
He moved.
She turned away with color rising along her cheekbones.
Dinner lasted longer than an hour.
Elena told him about working reception at a neighborhood repair company before Mia was born. She had scheduled crews, soothed angry customers, and occasionally translated Daniel's estimates into handwriting people could read.
"And housekeeping?" he asked.
"The company closed. Rosa knew I needed hours that worked around Mia."
She said it plainly, without asking him to pity her.
"What did you want to do before all that?"
"Sleep. Even before Mia, I had ambitious dreams."
He smiled.
She pointed at him with her fork.
"There."
"What?"
"Nothing. Carry on looking terrifying."
Mia leaned forward.
"He isn't scary."
"I have worked very hard on that reputation," Adrian told her.
"You cut my noodles."
"Discreetly."
Elena laughed so hard she put down her glass.
Later, Mia moved to the rug with her crayons. Elena remained at the table while Adrian brought coffee.
He set the blue mug beside her.
She looked at it.
"You remembered."
"You always choose that one."
"It's ridiculous to have a favorite mug in someone else's house."
"You can take it."
"I didn't mean that."
"Then I'll keep it here."
She traced the handle with one finger.
He sat closer than he had during dinner.
"Did Julian call you?" she asked.
"This afternoon. He's reviewing the records. We'll meet him Monday."
She nodded.
Then she surprised him.
"I don't want to talk about papers tonight."
"Neither do I."
"What do you do when you aren't working?"
He considered lying.
She saw the pause and shook her head.
"That's bad."
"I read."
"Contracts don't count."
"You've made the question unnecessarily restrictive."
She leaned back, smiling into her coffee.
He told her about the sailboat he had bought and used twice, the piano lessons his mother had insisted on, the fact that Gabriel had once taught him to make an omelet and he had forgotten the sequence.
She asked questions no one asked him anymore.
Not about his company. Not about what he intended to acquire next.
Whether he liked the water. Whether he missed playing. Whether he had ever burned the omelet.
He found himself answering all of them.
When Mia fell asleep against Elena's leg, Adrian carried her to the sofa while her mother gathered the crayons.
The child's weight settled trustingly against his chest.
He stood for a moment before putting her down.
Elena watched from the table.
Something in her expression made his chest tighten.
Then she glanced at the clock and reached for her coat.
He helped her into it. His fingers brushed the back of her neck as he lifted her hair free of the collar.
She went still.
So did he.
"Elena."
She turned halfway toward him.
Her gaze dropped to his mouth.
He saw it. She knew he saw it.
Then Mia stirred on the sofa and called for her mother.
Elena stepped away.
At the door, carrying her sleepy daughter, she looked back.
"Thank you for dinner."
He wanted to tell her to come tomorrow, even though it was her day off.
Instead he said, "You left your mug."
Her mouth softened.
"You said you'd keep it here."
After they left, he returned to the kitchen.
There were two coffee cups on the table and a yellow crayon beside his chair.
He left them there until morning.
