"The Coldhearted Billionaire Took Orders from My Little Girl." Chapter 10
Someone Who Came
Elena stayed until almost midnight.
When she finally stood, Adrian caught her hand and brought her back for one more kiss.
"I have an early start," she murmured against his mouth.
"I dislike your new employer already."
"You haven't met him."
"He has you at eight in the morning. I have sufficient information."
She laughed and kissed his cheek.
At the door, he helped her into her coat without trying to turn the small practical gesture into a reason she should stay.
"Sunday," she said.
He nodded.
The house felt different after she left. He still wanted her there. But now there was another evening to look forward to, chosen by both of them.
Over the next month, their lives began to overlap in less convenient ways.
Elena called from the grocery store to ask whether he actually liked mushrooms or had eaten them out of politeness. He telephoned her after a difficult meeting and listened while she described an argument between two plumbers over a missing ladder.
Mia discovered that being her mother's boyfriend meant he could still read stories, but apparently did not mean he could choose which one.
"That one again?" he asked on a Sunday evening.
She settled more comfortably against his arm.
"You did the duck wrong."
"I wasn't aware there was an examination."
"He sounds cross."
"He's lost his house."
From the doorway, Elena said, "She's been waiting all week to correct you."
Adrian opened the book.
He made the duck less cross.
The following week, Julian asked them back to his office.
This time there was no unopened box on the table. There were copies, a clear account of the properties, and an envelope addressed to Adrian in his father's handwriting.
"Gabriel left this with me," Julian said. "It should have reached you years ago."
Adrian did not touch it immediately.
Julian folded his hands.
"I kept waiting for the right conversation. Then your father's wishes, Gabriel's arrangements, the correspondence through your office—every delay made the next one easier. I'm sorry."
Adrian looked at the older man's face.
He wanted to be angry. He was angry.
But he was tired of every answer arriving after the person who should have given it was gone.
"Stay involved this time," he said. "Help finish the handover."
Julian nodded.
"I will."
He explained the rest without making them chase it.
Daniel had moved the workshop key after Vittorio's death while helping Gabriel consolidate the records. He had left the note in the desk in case anyone searched the old hiding place. The bank key remained there with the archived material.
The annual bank fee came from a standing payment Gabriel had arranged through his estate office. The original notice that Box 417 had closed had confused it with another account. A mundane mistake had helped preserve a very long silence.
Elena exhaled.
"So nobody was waiting for a three-year-old to find it."

"No," Julian said. "She was simply better at opening that drawer than the rest of us."
Adrian looked at the envelope.
How many ordinary opportunities had they all walked past?
Julian placed another document beside Elena.
"Daniel added this shortly before he died. It's about Mia."
Her hand stopped on her bag.
"What about her?"
"An invitation, when she's twenty-five, to take a community seat on the trust board. If she wants it. There is no obligation, and no money attached."
Elena read the page carefully.
Then she laughed under her breath.
"He wanted her to argue with important people too."
"She seems well prepared," Adrian said.
Elena looked at him, smiling.
He took her hand beneath the table.
The difficult decision was his own.
The waterfront properties had always belonged to the trust. His company's plans would have to change. Julian offered to help him take up his father's place among the trustees, working with the community board rather than through Moretti Holdings.
Adrian asked for the papers to be sent to his counsel and arranged the company meeting for Thursday.
In the car, he finally opened his father's letter.
Elena sat quietly beside him.
There were three pages. Explanations, mostly. An account of the money returned, an admission that keeping Vale's fraud private had protected the company's name as much as the man's family.
Then the handwriting grew less even.
I made it difficult for you to bring me anything except an achievement. You should have been able to bring me a mistake, or a disappointment, or simply yourself.
Adrian stopped reading.
Elena's fingers tightened around his.
The next line was shorter.
I was proud of you. I should have said it when you could answer.
He looked out of the window until the buildings became distinct again.
"He should have," Elena said.
Adrian nodded.
He folded the letter and put it in his inside pocket.
On Thursday, the directors argued about the waterfront for two hours.
Adrian explained the ownership, the revised plans, the independent review of the old accounts. He accepted the trusteeship and made it clear the company would not manage the trust's decisions.
There were objections. There were costs.
He answered the questions he could and assigned the rest to people qualified to resolve them.
At three forty, his phone vibrated.
A calendar reminder.
MIA — DUCK COSTUME. FOUR THIRTY.
He had promised to come to the preschool's spring singalong. Elena had mentioned she might be ten minutes late because of work, and Mia had asked him twice whether he really knew the address.
A director pushed another folder toward him.
"We should finish the revised projections now."
Adrian looked at the clock.
His father had once promised to watch him perform at school. Adrian remembered searching a doorway throughout an entire piano piece.
He closed the folder.
"Send them tonight. I'll review them before tomorrow's call."

"You're leaving?"
"Yes."
He was halfway to the car before he remembered he had not brought flowers.
At a corner shop, he bought three yellow tulips because the woman behind the counter assured him three were enough for a small duck.
He reached the classroom at four twenty-six.
Mia saw him before he found his seat.
Her whole face changed.
She waved both hands, forgetting she was supposed to be standing in line.
Adrian waved back.
Elena slipped into the chair beside him just as the music began.
She looked at the tulips resting on his knees.
Then she took his hand.
Mia missed half the words, sang the other half loudly, and bowed before anyone else had finished.
Adrian applauded until his palms hurt.
Afterward, she ran straight into him.
"You came!"
He gathered the feathers and small arms against his chest.
"I said I would."
"Did you see my wings?"
"They were excellent."
She took the flowers and held them beneath his nose.
"They're for Mommy too."
"An excellent allocation of resources."
Elena kissed him beside the coat hooks.
On the pavement outside, Mia ran ahead to show Tessa her flowers.
Elena remained close to his side.
"I heard the meeting was difficult," she said.
"Some of it."
"You didn't tell me."
He looked at the yellow feathers bobbing near the school gate.
"I wanted to be here."
She leaned her head briefly against his shoulder.
Later, after dinner at Elena's apartment, Mia fell asleep before the duck finished finding his house.
Adrian closed the book.
In the kitchen, Elena handed him tea in a chipped mug. His blue one still waited at the townhouse.
"I've been thinking," he said.
She raised an eyebrow.
"Should I be nervous?"
"Possibly. But I haven't called a property manager."
She smiled.
He took her hand.
"I want a life with you. Both of you. I know it takes more than wanting it, and I'm not asking you to decide tonight. But I want you to know where I'm going."
Elena looked toward the bedroom, then back at him.
"I think," she said softly, "you're already coming with us."
