"The Coldhearted Billionaire Took Orders from My Little Girl." Chapter 11
The House That Learned to Laugh
By the time Adrian bought a ring, Elena knew where he kept his spare reading glasses, Mia had turned four, and the townhouse had acquired a collection of small boots that seemed to reproduce beneath the stairs.
They had taken their time.
There had been Sunday dinners and ordinary disagreements, a weekend at the coast when Mia refused to believe the sea would remain there while she slept, and a winter evening when Elena fell asleep on his sofa with her hand inside his shirt collar.
Adrian had sat still for forty minutes rather than wake her.
Moving in had been Elena's suggestion.
She had brought it up over breakfast after spending twenty minutes searching for Mia's mittens in the wrong house.
"I think we're ready," she said.
He had looked at her so quickly that she laughed.
"You can ask which room I'm talking about before you start moving furniture."
"I'm trying very hard to appear calm."
"You're failing."
They chose a room for Mia together. Elena kept her job and brought her own battered kitchen table for the back sitting room because it was the right height for puzzles.
Daniel's photographs came too.
On moving day, Adrian found Elena in the hall holding a frame against the wall.
It showed Daniel with baby Mia asleep on his chest.
"Here?" she asked.
Adrian stood beside her.
"A little lower. She'll want to see it."
Elena looked at him.
Then she set down the frame and kissed him with both arms around his neck.
That had been six months before he found himself in a jeweler's office trying to explain why the largest diamond was not necessarily the right one.
He chose a smaller stone with two tiny ones beside it. Elena liked things she could wear while doing something else. He knew that now.
The proposal went wrong immediately.
He had planned dinner in the small garden. Rosa had arranged lights. Mia had been assigned the important task of staying upstairs with her aunt until dessert.
At seven, rain began falling hard enough to rattle against the windows.
At seven ten, Mia appeared in the kitchen wearing pajamas and one shoe.
"Is Mommy saying yes yet?"
Adrian shut his eyes.
Behind him, Elena put down the salad bowl.
"To what?"
Mia looked at him.
He looked back.
"We discussed discretion."
"I didn't say the ring."
From the hallway came the sound of Elena's sister laughing helplessly.
Elena turned toward him, her mouth open in a smile that made every carefully prepared sentence leave his head.
"Adrian?"
He took the small box from his pocket.
Mia gasped despite having ruined the surprise herself.
He set the box on the counter and took Elena's hands.
"I had something better organized."
"I can't imagine."
"There were flowers."
"There are tomatoes," she said, glancing at the counter. "We'll manage."

He laughed.
Then he lowered himself onto one knee.
Her smile trembled.
He looked up at the woman who had once stood terrified in his breakfast room, certain her daughter had cost her a job.
Now she wore his sweater over her dress because the kitchen door had been open, and there was a mark of flour beside her wrist from helping Rosa with dessert.
He wanted this woman in every room of the rest of his life.
"I love you," he said. "I love the way you make a place your own. I love that you came back when you didn't have to. And I want to keep coming home to you."
A tear slipped down her cheek.
"Will you marry me?"
"Yes."
He had barely heard the word before she bent toward him, her hands on his face.
"Yes," she said again, laughing against his mouth.
Mia began jumping beside them.
"I knew! I knew!"
Adrian rose, caught Elena against him, and kissed her while the rain battered the forgotten garden table.
When he finally put the ring on her finger, Mia held Elena's hand and examined it.
"Is it stuck?"
"Not yet," Elena said. "I've only just got it."
Mia seemed satisfied.
Later, Adrian found her sitting on the bottom stair, studying the toes of her slippers. Her aunt had finally persuaded her to surrender the shoe.
He sat beside her.
"What are you thinking?"
"If you marry Mommy, are you still Adrian?"
He rested his elbows on his knees.
"Yes."
"Tessa says her stepdad takes her to swimming."
"I could take you to swimming."
She considered that.
"I have Daddy already."
Adrian swallowed.
"I know."
"In the pictures."
"And in your stories."
Her small hand rested on his sleeve.
"You can be Adrian too."
He covered her hand with his.
"I'd like that very much."
Four months later, he waited in the garden beneath clear skies.
The wedding was small enough that he knew every person sitting in the rows of chairs.
Rosa had tissues clutched in one hand and was directing a server with the other. Julian sat beside Elena's sister, his cane leaning against his chair. Neighbors from her old building had arrived early and brought more food than anyone had requested.
Mia appeared first, concentrating fiercely on the flower petals.
She scattered six, forgot what she was doing, and hurried the rest of the way to Adrian.
"I didn't lose the rings," she whispered loudly.
"I'm delighted."
"They're with Aunt Sara."
"An excellent precaution."
Then Elena stepped through the open doors.
Adrian forgot the guests.
Her dress was ivory, simple across the shoulders, the skirt moving softly around her legs. She carried white flowers tied with a narrow blue ribbon.
She found his eyes and smiled.
He had looked at her across desks, kitchen counters, restaurant tables, and the small untidy rooms of a life he had once believed he could only observe from outside.

Now she was walking toward him.
When she reached him, she squeezed his hands.
"Breathe," she whispered.
He obeyed.
Their vows were short.
Elena promised honesty, patience when she could manage it, and to tell him when he was becoming impossible.
"Promptly," she added.
The guests laughed.
Adrian looked at her fingers in his.
"I can't promise I won't make mistakes," he said. "But you won't have to wonder whether I'll come back and talk to you. You won't have to guess whether I love you. I'll tell you."
Elena's eyes filled.
"And I'll come when I say I will," he added.
Beside them, Mia whispered, "Like the duck day."
Adrian smiled at her.
"Exactly like the duck day."
When he kissed his wife, Mia applauded before anyone else.
Afterward, while the guests moved toward the tables, Elena stopped beside the family photographs arranged in the sitting room.
Daniel's picture stood among them. So did Gabriel's and one of Vittorio holding a much younger Adrian by the shoulder.
Adrian waited in the doorway while Elena touched Daniel's frame.
She remained there for a quiet moment.
Then she turned and held out her hand.
He went to her.
"Ready?" he asked.
She glanced at the photographs once more.
"Yes."
They returned to the garden together.
By the time the Harbor Trust opened its first renovated community rooms that autumn, Elena had stopped correcting people who assumed Adrian had always been easy with children.
She simply looked at him and enjoyed his discomfort.
The old workshop had become a place for classes and repairs. Daniel's records had been copied and preserved; his name appeared beside Vittorio's and Gabriel's in a brief account of the fund's beginnings.
There were tables people could actually use and cupboards that did not require secret keys.
Mia was mostly interested in the box of chalk near the entrance.
Julian found Adrian beside a window and handed him the two brass keys.
"Everything has been catalogued. I thought you'd want these back."
Adrian turned them over in his hand.
417. 806.
Once, he had thought finding the last paper would explain what to do with his life.
Across the room, Elena was laughing while Mia tried to draw around her hand.
He put the keys in his pocket and went to join them.
The following Monday, his breakfast meeting began with a discussion of quarterly forecasts and ended with his five senior executives staring at a small girl carrying oatmeal.
Mia stopped beside his chair.
"Rosa said you didn't finish."
Adrian looked toward the doorway.
Elena stood there in her coat, ready to leave for work, smiling at him over her coffee.
"I had half," he said.
Mia inspected the bowl.
"Not the good half."
His chief operating officer lowered his head.
Adrian recognized the movement.
Some things had not changed at all.
He lifted Mia onto the empty chair beside him.
"One spoonful," he negotiated.
"Three."
"Two."
She considered him.
"And a smile."
Elena laughed.
Adrian looked at his wife, then at the little girl holding the spoon with all the confidence in the world.
He smiled before she could ask again.
"Open," Mia said.
And he did.
