"A Dangerous Man to Call My Own" Chapter 27
A Wedding, Eventually
Clara found him outside the bookshop with two coffees and a paper bag.
"What's that?"
"Something with too much sugar. Woman said you'd like it."
She looked inside.
A small pastry filled with cream.
"She was right."
He handed her the warmer cup.
She took a sip, then looked at his face.
"Good meeting?"
"Useful."
"Are you going to tell me what it was?"
He looked at her for a moment.
"I'm staying."
She stopped walking.
He waited, the second coffee steaming between his hands.
"Here?"
"With you. Wherever we put the furniture."
Her eyes filled before she could stop them.
He looked alarmed.
"Don't start. We're in the street."
"Then stop saying things in the street."
She put her free hand into his coat pocket.
He shifted the coffee and covered it with his own.
Neither mentioned the tears again.
***
That night he tried to comb her hair.
It did not go well.
"You're pulling."
"I'm barely touching it."
"Then the comb is acting independently."
He frowned at the damp tangle in his palm.
Clara watched him in the mirror. His shoulders were braced as though he were lifting something heavy, every bit of concentration aimed at not hurting her.
She reached for the comb.
"Give it here."
He let her take it, then picked up the dryer.
"I can manage that part."
He did, after she showed him not to hold it against one patch of scalp for half a minute.
When they were finished, he kissed the back of her neck.
"Have a wedding with me."
She looked at him in the mirror.
"We had one. There are photographs. Vince brought a shrub."
"Flowers."
"You could have rented it out as a woodland venue."
"Clara."
She turned on the stool.
He stood with the dryer still in his hand.
"I want people to know," he said.
"They know."
"I want you in a dress. I want to stand next to you and look like I meant to get married, instead of like Owen booked me a meeting."
Her mouth softened.
He saw it and came closer.
"You'd look beautiful."
"I look beautiful now."
"You do. I'm trying to get a second occasion out of it."
She looked down at her lap, imagining silk where the old cotton sleep shirt lay against her knees.
"Nothing enormous," she said.
"The dress or the wedding?"
"Both."
"I was hoping for something I could see from the other end of the street."
"You can see me perfectly well now."
He smiled, but waited while she thought.
As a girl, she had drawn wedding dresses in the margins of school notebooks. She had given them long trains and sleeves too delicate to be practical. Later she had become embarrassed by those drawings and torn them out.
"A veil," she said suddenly.
He looked at her.
"You can have a veil."

"I know I can. I'm telling you I want one."
His smile changed.
"Then a veil it is."
She bit her lip, trying not to smile back too quickly. For once, wanting something childish didn't seem like a confession she needed to apologize for.
She laughed.
He put down the dryer and rested his hands on either side of her chair.
"What is it? Really?"
She looked away.
The room was warm. His reflection waited in the glass beside hers.
"I keep thinking I'll make it important," she said, "and then you'll disappear again."
He crouched.
"It's already important."
She looked at him then.
He didn't offer another easy promise. He took her hand and held it against his chest until she felt the steady beat beneath the skin.
"Let me do this," he said.

They settled on June of the following year.
Damian objected to the distance between now and then.
Clara pointed out that the Westbridge house still had no furniture, half the finishes remained undecided, and she had work that couldn't simply be abandoned because he had developed an interest in flower arrangements.
"I can furnish a house in a week."
"That's what frightens me."
"You don't trust my taste."
"You wanted to give me a gold sculpture taller than my suitcase."
He looked toward Owen, who had made the mistake of being present.
Owen found something urgent in his briefcase.
Clara kissed her husband before he could blame anybody.
"Next June," she said. "Give us time to enjoy getting there."
He grumbled, but put the date in his phone.

Spring brought more work than either had expected.
Professor Whitmore asked Clara to join the planning side of the practice for Willowbend rather than remain primarily with the survey and drawing team.
She wasn't immediately pleased.
"Am I not good enough?"
He looked over his glasses.
"At what?"
"The technical work."
"You're good. You aren't yet exceptional."
Clara went quiet.
He let her absorb that, then slid a marked-up proposal across the desk.
"You see connections. You understand what people are trying to say when they haven't said it well. You can stand in a room full of competing interests and get something decided. That's a skill."
"It sounds less respectable when I do it with my relatives."
The professor almost smiled.
"Consider this better paid."
She took the assignment.
The work frightened her differently. Budgets, meetings, stakeholders, schedules: every confident answer generated another question she needed to research before morning.
She was learning that being useful didn't always look like the person she had imagined becoming at twenty.
Damian understood that better than she expected.
"I wanted to own a truck once," he told her.
"You own several."
"Exactly. No ambition after that. Everything else happened by accident."
She laughed and asked him to read a contractor's proposed schedule.
He found three problems before finishing the first page.

He brought his own companies together under Wolfe Holdings.
Some he sold. Some he closed. A few he kept because the people working there needed their wages even when the profit looked small on a sheet.
Owen built systems around the decisions. Vince complained about how many forms now accompanied a simple delivery.
Willowbend became the center of the work.
The river land Damian had bought years earlier, when nobody had wanted the trouble of maintaining it, now sat inside a development plan people in expensive offices discussed with enthusiasm.
He listened, asked blunt questions, and read everything before signing.
Clara watched him become more careful without becoming less himself.
She introduced him to her colleagues one afternoon outside the hotel.
"This is my husband, Damian Wolfe."
He shook hands so gravely she nearly laughed.
"She works too hard," he told one senior architect. "Don't encourage it."
"He sends food when I miss lunch," Clara said.
"Someone should."
Her colleagues liked him.
Afterward, one woman asked why Clara worked at all if her husband owned the place they were standing in.
Clara looked at the rolled drawings beneath her arm.
"So I can complain about meetings with the rest of you."
The woman laughed.
Clara was glad. She hadn't wanted to spend the afternoon explaining something that seemed obvious to her.

Bennett Row became its own small battle.
Some buildings were empty. Others housed shops with old leases and owners who knew exactly how much disruption they could afford.
Demolition would have been easier.
Clara stood before a meeting room and explained why easier wasn't the same as better.
She had photographs, measured drawings, a staged repair proposal, and a plan for uses that belonged to the town instead of being copied from somewhere prettier.
Damian sat at the back, his arms folded.
He watched people stop glancing at the clock and begin asking real questions.
When she finished, the professor nodded once.
The plan moved forward.
That evening, Clara found her husband standing in the courtyard studying the old roofline.
"What?" she asked.
He looked at her.
"You were good today."
She smiled.
"I know."
He laughed and caught her hand.
