"A Dangerous Man to Call My Own" Chapter 28
Let Me Teach You
"What's an effective catchment?"
Clara looked up from her laptop.
Damian stood beside the bed holding a report as though it had personally offended him.
"For what?"
"This."
He put the document on the table, found the relevant paragraph, and tapped it.
She read.
"People close enough, interested enough, and able to get here to make the visitor estimates useful. Not everybody within a hundred miles is going to visit just because somebody draws a circle on a map."
He nodded slowly.
"That's what I thought. Why don't they say that?"
"Because then the report would be shorter."
He smiled, relieved.
Then he turned the page.
"And this revenue per square foot? They want a number by tomorrow."
Clara stopped typing.
His shirt was open at the neck. His face had darkened in the sun from days on site, and dust clung to the seam of one trouser leg.
He looked tired.
More than tired, he looked careful.
A man who could order half a room into silence was standing beside her wondering whether a question would make her think less of him.
She closed the laptop just enough to move it.
"Sit down."
"You're working."
"So are you."
He sat beside her on the long vanity bench.
She opened a blank document.
"Start with what they're trying to measure. Not the term. What decision does the number help them make?"
He leaned closer.
She used the hotel's restaurant as an example. Customers, spending, space, the difference between a full room and a profitable one.
He asked two questions she couldn't answer immediately.
She looked them up.
He watched.
"You don't know everything?"
"A terrible disappointment for us both."
His laugh loosened something in his shoulders.
They worked through the page together.
When he made the next calculation without her, she checked it, then nodded.
"Exactly."
He looked at the number.
"That's all it means?"
"That's all."
"I hate these people."
"You haven't met half of them."
"Keeping an open mind."
She laughed and opened the earlier planning report.
"Most of your numbers are already here. You don't need to invent them. You need to understand where they came from and what you're promising by using them."
He read with his finger beneath the line.
She didn't rush him.
***
By midnight, her hair had dried without help and his report had enough notes in the margins to make it useful.
Clara sent him the source files.
The email bounced.
"What's your address?"
He gave her one that belonged to an assistant.
"Your own."
"I don't use it."
She looked at him.
"You send people to speak to other people about speaking to you, don't you?"
"Works well."
"Until you want a document at one in the morning."
She helped him recover the account Owen had set up, changed the password he had forgotten, and wrote the new one on a card he immediately put in his wallet.

"Don't lose it."
"You make marriage sound like homework."
"Tonight it is."
He looked at her profile, the small crease between her brows as she checked the attachments.
She was teaching him without making a performance of his ignorance.
He had spent enough years pretending not to care about that ignorance to recognize what the kindness cost him.
"Clara."
"Hmm?"
"Thank you."
She turned.
He didn't say things like that often. Not plainly.
She touched his wrist.
"You helped me when I didn't know how things worked."
"That was different."
"Why?"
He had no answer he liked.
She leaned against him while the last file uploaded.
He put his arm around her and watched the progress bar as though it were the best thing on the screen.

The days filled with people.
Consultants. Contractors. Local shopkeepers who wanted to know whether the new paving meant they couldn't get deliveries for a week. Residents who wanted the river path repaired before anybody built a café beside it.
Clara took notes in the morning and revised proposals at night.
Damian took calls while walking the sites and came back with mud on his shoes and precise complaints about things the schedule didn't allow for.
One afternoon, he found her studying a timber sample beside the site fence.
"You'll get a splinter," he said.
"I'm looking at the grain."
He took the piece and turned it to show a line she hadn't noticed.
"Follow that. You'll see where it's going to move when it dries."
She leaned closer.
"That much?"
"Sometimes. Depends where it came from. How they kept it."
She asked another question, and he answered without having to think about it. Then he showed her the difference in a second sample, using his thumb to mark the change.
Clara took photographs of both. She made him repeat the last part so she could get the note right.
"Can you show the site manager?"
"He should know."
"He might. I didn't."
Damian looked at her, then nodded.
She labeled the photographs before she forgot the explanation. Beside her, he stood a little straighter, holding the piece of timber while she finished typing.
They met sometimes only at the hotel, where her team had taken over a floor and she had reclaimed the office bedroom because it was convenient.
"We have a house," he reminded her.
"You have a wife who needs to be downstairs at seven."
"I can drive."
"And I can sleep an extra twenty minutes."
He moved his shirts back into the cupboard.
Owen watched a maintenance man carry up Damian's preferred pillow and said nothing.
Vince said, "You should charge yourselves rent."
Clara told him to send an invoice.
He thought about it long enough that Owen took the blank form away.

In July, a visiting delegation came to review Willowbend.
Damian arranged transport from Westbridge and put people in charge of details Clara would never have thought to ask about.

The group toured the river settlements, the new paths, the old commercial street. They inspected samples, reviewed access, discussed which buildings could open first without making the unfinished sections feel abandoned.
Clara answered questions until she dreamed about them.
Julian arrived with the professional visitors.
She knew he might. She still felt a brief tightening when he stepped out of the car.
He greeted her as a colleague.
She was grateful enough to do the same.
For the week, it worked.
He asked useful questions. He didn't try to find her alone. When someone praised her work, he didn't imply he had made it possible.
Damian watched from a distance and gave nobody a reason to remark on it.
On the last afternoon, Clara found him beside a contractor's truck, eating a sandwich over a rolled drawing.
"You missed lunch."
He looked at the sandwich.
"Powerful observation."
"Actual lunch. With a plate."
"That comes out the same in the end."
She wiped a streak of dust from his jaw with her thumb.
He went still, then caught her hand and kissed it.
"People can see," she said.
"Good."
She smiled and took a bite of his sandwich.
It was the quietest ten minutes either of them had that day.

At the final dinner, Professor Whitmore called Clara to the main table.
She went reluctantly, carrying the water she had been drinking, and found herself seated beside Julian.
Introductions followed.
Someone knew his father. Someone had studied with his supervisor. A man who had never seen Clara before asked whether the two of them had come through the same university department.
"Different years," Julian said.
"Good-looking pair. No wonder you haven't settled down."
The joke produced exactly the laughter its maker expected.
Julian looked at Clara for half a second.
"Bad timing has been a problem of mine."
More laughter.
Across the table, Damian lifted his glass.
His expression remained pleasant.
Clara saw his thumb press hard against the stem.
