"A Dangerous Man to Call My Own" Chapter 37
The Wrong Car
On the morning of June first, the flowers fell off the wedding car.
Clara's friends found this funnier than she did.
"He's late," one announced, holding the phone away from her mouth. "We're charging him. A hundred dollars a minute. Each."
Damian's laughter came through clearly enough for everyone to hear.
"Fine. Keep counting."
The room erupted.
Clara took the phone from her friend.
"What are you promising them?"
"Whatever gets me through the door."
"You could start by arriving."
"I'm trying. The florist's losing an argument with the hood of the car."
She laughed.
The sound quieted him.
"Clara."
"What?"
"I love you."
She stood very still, one hand resting against the ivory satin at her waist.
He had said it before in ways that cost money, effort, sleep. Hearing the plain words made everything inside her lift.
"Wait for me," he said.
She looked at herself in the mirror, the veil, the tiny shine of pins in her hair, the girl who had once drawn dresses in the margins of exercise books.
"I'm waiting."
When the call ended, she couldn't stay still.
The bridesmaids were arguing over a missing earring. Someone had set her pink diamond necklace on the dressing table. She forgot it.
She picked up the bouquet and went downstairs.
Outside, Bennett Row was full of flowers and people. Children waited for candy. Rose-covered arches stretched toward the end of the narrow street. The weather was so beautiful it seemed somebody must have ordered that too.
Clara began to walk faster.
Then she ran.
Her friends came after her, laughing and calling for her to slow down. Vince tried to clear a path without knocking over any of the neighborhood children.
"Since when could she run?" one bridesmaid demanded.
"She used to cry through the fitness test."
Clara heard none of it properly.
She saw a dark Mercedes pull in at the curb and went straight to it.
Same shape. Same color as the older car Damian sometimes used.
She opened the passenger door, gathered her skirt, and sat down.
The car moved before she finished fastening the seat belt.
She looked at the driver.
"Julian?"
He kept his eyes on the road.
"You didn't tell me."
Her smile disappeared.
"Stop the car."
"I found out through the alumni group."
"Julian. Pull over."
The light ahead turned red. He slowed, but remained in the traffic lane.
Part of her veil fluttered outside the closed door.
She tugged it, realized it was caught, and let it go.
"You know I've been married for years."
"Knowing isn't the same as seeing you in the dress."
She looked at him properly.
He seemed exhausted. His pale blue shirt was immaculate, his hair neatly combed, but the skin beneath his eyes was drawn and gray.
"What are you doing?"
"Asking for five minutes."
"You could have called."

"You blocked me again."
"I didn't."
She stopped.
Damian had used her phone at the fitting to take pictures. She remembered him sitting with it afterward, thumb moving across the screen.
Heat rose in her face.
The light changed.
"If you can't reach me, that doesn't give you the right to drive off with me."
Julian's jaw tightened.
"I won't make you miss the wedding."
"Then stop somewhere safe. Now."
He crossed the bridge and pulled into a broad turnout beside the river road. Beyond it the hills rose green and quiet. The route went nowhere useful except back toward town.
He switched off the engine.
Clara released a breath she'd been holding.
"Say what you came to say."
For a few seconds he looked at the bouquet in her lap.
"I imagined this," he said. "You wearing satin. Something simple."
"This isn't helping."
"I know."
He rubbed his thumb against the steering wheel.
"I took the first flight I could get. I thought if I saw you before—"
"Before what?"
He didn't answer.
She turned toward the window. In the side mirror, several SUVs appeared at the far end of the road.
Somebody had seen her get in.
Good.
Julian saw them too.
"That's what I mean. He owns this town now. You can't get near him without somebody deciding whether you're allowed. Is this really what you want?"
"You don't know my life."
"I know what sort of man he is."
"Then why are you asking me?"
He flinched.
She was tired of the conversation before they reached the familiar part about what she deserved.
He reached into the glove compartment and took out a red velvet box.
Inside lay a string of pearls.
"A wedding present."
"Julian."
"Let me give you something without arguing."
She looked at the pearls in his hand.
They were lovely. Once, she would have understood everything he wanted them to mean and worked hard not to embarrass him by wanting too much in return.
Now she only wanted to get out of the car.
"Keep them."
He gave a small, wounded laugh.
"Where is he better than me?"
She closed her eyes.
That question again. Different man, same question, as if answering it could explain years of her life.
"It isn't a competition."
"Then explain it. Because I don't understand."
She looked at him.
"I couldn't spend the rest of my life earning permission to be in your family."
"My mother was difficult. I know that."
"You knew it then."
"She would have come around if we'd given her time."
"How much?"
He fell silent.
"I grew up depending on people who reminded me of it every day. I thought that was normal. If someone fed you, they could say anything they liked. If they gave you a room, they could decide what kind of person you were."
Her fingers pressed into the bouquet wrapping.

"Then I got a job. I paid my bills. People asked for my opinion and listened to the answer. I discovered I could go a whole day without trying to work out whose mood I had to survive."
"I never wanted you to feel like that."
"I know. But you wanted me to tolerate it."
He looked away.
"Damian isn't perfect," she said. "I know more about that than you do. But I don't have to convince him I'm worth having in the room."
Julian's eyes returned to hers.
"And money has nothing to do with it?"
She almost laughed.
"I'm not poor anymore. Even without his company. That isn't the thing you can offer me now."
The words hurt him. She saw that they did.
She softened her voice without taking them back.
"You helped me. I remember it. But I don't owe you the rest of my life because part of it belonged to you."
For a while he looked at the pearls.
Then he closed the box.
"When did you become so hard?"
"Maybe when I learned I could say no and survive it."
He breathed out slowly.
The SUVs had stopped behind them. Clara couldn't see who had stepped out.
She unfastened the seat belt and gathered her skirt.
Julian reached toward her.
"Wait."
"What now?"
"There's something else. A letter."
She paused.
He shifted toward her, one hand going into his jacket pocket.
"And then I'll let you go. I promise."
She looked down at his empty hand, at the velvet box, at the bouquet lying crooked across her knees.
"You should have let me go a long time ago."
His face changed.
"I know."
He leaned forward, asking for one last embrace she hadn't agreed to give.
Through the rear window, a pale ribbon on another car lifted in the wind.
She began to turn her face away. The bouquet slipped against the console, scattering a few loose petals over her skirt.
Her hand was already reaching for the door when the world broke sideways.
Then came the impact.
