"A Dangerous Man to Call My Own" Chapter 39
What She Did for Him
Julian woke with his right arm immobilized and Clara sitting beside the bed in a bloodstained wedding dress.
For a moment he looked pleased simply to see her.
Then he remembered.
"Are you hurt?"
"They checked me. Bruised. Nothing they need to keep me for."
He closed his eyes briefly.
"Good."
The wound in his thigh had been cleaned and closed. There had been frighteningly much blood, but the doctors said the injury was treatable. His arm would take longer.
Clara had listened to every word twice.
Now she held a cup while he drank.
"You're being very kind," he said.
She set it down.
"Don't sound so suspicious."
"I've spent years hoping you'd look at me like this again."
"Then hope for something else. This isn't a good way to get my attention."
A smile moved across his tired face.
He asked to be transferred to a private hospital in Westbridge.
"Your family's doctors could come here," she said.
"That's what I'd prefer to avoid."
She looked at him.
He met her eyes until she understood.
Mrs. Ashford wouldn't begin with questions about which driver had misunderstood which order. She would begin with the woman her son had nearly died beside.
And then she would keep going.
Clara sat back.
"I'm sorry."
"You didn't drive into us."
"I threatened you ten minutes before it happened."
"Yes. Your timing could use work."
The unexpected joke broke something in her. She covered her face and cried.
Julian reached across awkwardly with his uninjured hand.
"Clara. I'm still here."
"You frightened me."
"Good. I was beginning to think you were entirely immune."
She lowered her hands and looked at his bruised face.
"You look like a pheasant that lost a fight."
He laughed, then winced.
"Don't make me do that."
She pressed a cold pack gently against his cheek.
It was easy to be tender beside a hospital bed. There was a task for her hands, a reason to stay, a clear and limited thing she could do to make somebody hurt less.
She wished the rest of life came with such useful instructions.

At the private hospital, Julian watched her wash the pearl necklace in a paper cup.
The pearls came clean. The thread between them remained faintly pink.
"You can have it restrung," he said.
She set it on a towel.
"I know."
"You don't have to keep it."
She looked up, surprised by his voice.
"It was supposed to be different," he said. "All of this."
"Yes."
He watched her fold the towel around the necklace.
"I brought something else. In my jacket."
She found an envelope inside the breast pocket.
A professor at Cambridge had written a recommendation after reviewing the materials Julian had shown him. The letter wasn't admission or a promise of it. It was something real she could put beside the work she'd done herself.

She read it twice.
"You came back to bring this?"
"Among other foolish reasons."
She sat down slowly.
"Thank you."
"That's the one thing tonight I don't mind being thanked for."
Later, when the ward quieted, he said he wasn't giving up on her.
She took his uninjured hand.
"Then listen carefully."
He looked at her.
"I don't want us back. Even after today. Even if my marriage ends. It wouldn't mean I was coming to you."
His hand tightened once around hers.
Then loosened.
"He's dangerous."
"I know what happened today."
"Do you?"
"Yes."
She looked at the dressing on his arm.
"I won't argue with you while you're in that bed because of him. But I won't let gratitude turn into another promise I can't keep."
He watched her for a long time.
"You never used to speak to me like this."
"I should have."
He turned toward the window.
She stayed beside him until the nurse came to change the dressing.

Julian wanted to leave the country as soon as the treating team considered travel reasonable. Clara arranged an escort, changed the tickets, and booked enough space that he wouldn't spend the journey folded painfully against a stranger.
She brought clean clothes from the old apartment.
His shirt still hung at the back of a wardrobe neither of them had properly emptied.
She found one of her own dresses there too, cream silk, loose at the waist. She put it on because her wedding dress had become unbearable to look at.
At the airport, Julian watched her check his documents for the third time.
"I never knew you could be this attentive."
"I'm trying to get rid of you efficiently."
"An expensive service."
"Don't mention it. I'm already in mourning for the airfare."
He smiled.
Then he took the document wallet from her hand.
"Ask me."
She went quiet.
People passed around them, pulling cases toward departures. An announcement repeated overhead. She could have pretended not to hear.
He knew her too well for that.
"The apartment," she began.
"That's not what you want to ask."
Her eyes dropped.
Julian's expression changed, losing its teasing edge.
"I won't pursue him."
She closed her eyes.
"Thank you."
"You don't have to make yourself small for him."
"I'm not."
But she knew how the last day looked. Every careful kindness. Every bill paid before anyone asked. She had been tending one man while trying to protect another.
Julian knew it too.
"I can't promise what anybody else may do," he said. "But you have my word about me."
She nodded.
There were things beyond his control, things that couldn't be wiped away because a wounded man forgave them. For now, his promise was the only certainty she could carry home.
"Use the letter," he said.
"I will."
"For yourself. Not because I sent it."
She nodded again.
He left without asking for another embrace.

At noon, Clara returned to the Grand Briar.
The roses still stood around the ballroom doors. Some had begun to brown at the edges.
Inside, staff had cleared most of the tables. The head table remained untouched, its glasses, flowers, and two unused place settings waiting beneath dimmed lights.
Damian sat there alone.
He rose when he saw her, catching the table to steady himself.
"You're back."
She stopped a few feet away.
His hands had been wrapped hurriedly. Blood had seeped through one dressing. His shirt was creased and dirty, his face unshaven.
"Have you eaten?" he asked.
She shook her head.
He turned toward the far door.
"Get her something hot."
She came to the table and took the glass from his hand.
For a while they sat without speaking.
He looked at the cream dress and recognized it from the apartment.
She saw him recognize it.
Neither said anything.
"How is he?" Damian asked.
"Recovering. He's gone back to England."
He nodded.
His fingers moved toward hers, then stopped. He rubbed them against his trousers, felt the pain at last, and drew his hand back into his lap.
"I never knew how to do this," he said.
"Do what?"
"Be what you needed."
She stared at the empty place setting.
He gave a small shake of his head.
"Never mind."
Then he looked at her bag.
"Have you brought something for me to sign?"
She didn't move.
The separation papers were inside. She had printed them during the night, unsure whether she wanted an ending or something serious enough to make him understand she couldn't go on being frightened.
Now he was asking for them as if the decision had already been made.
She put the folder on the table.
He turned to the last page.
"You haven't signed."
"Read it first."
"I don't need to. Take what you want."
"Damian."
"I mean it."
He signed with his injured hand, jaw tightening around the pain.
A spot of blood marked the paper near his name.
Clara picked up the pen.
Vince came through the door and snatched it out of her hand.
"No."
Damian looked up.
"Put it down."
"You can't do this."
"Vince."
He held the folder against his chest.
"He came back half-dead and went straight to Westbridge to surprise you. Do you know that? Bought you a car. And what were you doing? In that apartment with Ashford—"
"Shut up."
Damian's chair struck the floor behind him.
Clara stood too.
The room seemed suddenly very far away.
"What did you say?"
Vince looked at Damian, then at her.
Damian took the papers from him and put them back on the table.
"Leave it."
She stared at her husband.
"All this time?"
He wouldn't meet her eyes.
She heard herself ask, quietly and clearly, "Did you ever believe me?"
