"A Dangerous Man to Call My Own" Chapter 41
The Man Who Went Looking
The doctor was cleaning Clara's feet when someone knocked at the suite door.
She pulled the blanket higher.
"If it's Owen, let him in."
It was the marketing director, carrying a tray and a phone that wouldn't stop vibrating.
"I've left messages. I can't get through to either of them."
Clara nodded as though that didn't matter.
The doctor lifted a small piece of gravel from her heel. She looked at the ceiling until the sting passed.
"There's soup," the woman said. "And fresh clothes in the bedroom. Anything else you need, call downstairs."
"Thank you."
She meant it. The kindness was almost more than she could bear.
When everyone left, she sat on the edge of the bed and listened to the rain start again.
Her nightdress. His jacket.
She had wanted a room with a lock nobody else could open. Now she had one, and she wished she were somewhere entirely different.

Damian was in the tunnel.
He had heard the news in the hotel lobby, half asleep over a cold cup of coffee. Tourists came in talking about trapped cars and a small silver convertible nearly submerged beside a truck.
He had asked Owen one question.
"Was she coming today?"
Then he had run.
Now water dripped from the roof, and mud dragged at his boots. Emergency lights turned the abandoned vehicles into a line of strange, wounded animals.
He went from window to window with a flashlight.
"Clara!"
A rescue worker caught his arm.
"Sir, you need to stay behind the barrier."
"My wife was here."
"We've taken survivors to several locations. Give us her name."
He gave it. He gave the registration number, the model, the color. The worker wrote everything down and told him to wait.
Waiting lasted forty seconds.
Then he was moving again.
Outside, Owen and Vince arranged equipment from their construction sites. Nobody knew whether Clara had escaped. None of them was willing to leave while another car remained covered in mud.
The calls from the hotel went unanswered among calls from dispatchers, drivers, hospitals, and frightened families.
By the time the convertible came out, it was dark.
Damian reached it first.
The window was opaque with silt. He wiped it with his sleeve and saw her bag on the seat.
Her shawl lay beside it.
For a moment his knees wouldn't hold him.
Owen caught him under the arm.
"She's at the hotel."
Damian looked at him without understanding.
Owen held up his phone, shaking now too.
"A message. She's safe. Cuts on her feet. They took care of her."
Damian closed his eyes.
The sound that came out of him was almost a laugh and nothing like one.
He gripped Owen's shoulder so hard the smaller man winced.
"You saw that now?"
"Just now."
Damian let go.
Beyond them, workers were lifting another car. A man stood behind the cordon waiting for news that might not be good.

Damian turned back toward the tunnel.
"Keep the machines here," he said. "Whatever they need."

He reached her room near dawn.
The bedside lamp was off. Clara slept curled on her side, a corner of the blanket tucked beneath her cheek.
He stood inside the door until his eyes adjusted.
Then he went to the foot of the bed.
One bandaged ankle lay outside the covers. Tiny scratches crossed the arch of her other foot.
He sat carefully, lifting the blanket only enough to cover her again.
She had walked here on those feet.
He lowered his head until his forehead rested near her ankle.
"You could have called," he whispered.
She didn't wake.
He knew all the answers she might give. No phone. No number she wanted to use. No certainty he was still the person she should call.
He sat until the light behind the curtains began to change.
Then he left without touching the empty pillow beside hers.
***
Over the next week, Clara noticed things without asking about them.
The armchair had moved closer to the bed. Once she woke to the scent of his soap and found nobody there. Another morning a fresh glass of water stood beside the one she'd left untouched.
She told herself it was housekeeping.
Owen brought the possessions recovered from her car.
"The phone didn't survive. The bag may be salvageable."
"I'll replace it."
He hesitated over a second case.
"Your things from the office."
She looked at it.
"Buy new ones."
"All of them?"
"Yes."
"Clara—"
"Please."
He put the case aside.
Her mentor called while Owen was still there.
"How's the foot?"
"Improving."
"I can send somebody else for the final inspection."
"No. It's my handover. I want to finish it. Could I have another week?"
"You can have ten days. Photograph the demonstration gardens while you're there. We need a record before the opening crowds flatten everything."
She smiled faintly.
"I'll get the planting details."
He asked about her study plans.
She said she was still deciding.
"Good. Decide what you want to learn before you decide which city you want to disappear into."
She looked at the window.
"I'm not disappearing."
"Then you can bear to consider the program here too. I'd take you on if the application is good enough. You know the work. You don't need an ocean between you and this town to become better at it."
She was quiet for a long time.
"I didn't think you were taking another group."
"I wasn't. I'm reconsidering."
Her eyes filled unexpectedly.
"Thank you."
"Don't thank me yet. I'll make you work."
After the call, Owen handed her tissues without comment.
She took one.
"He always does."
"I gathered."
When Owen had gone, she opened the notebook she'd carried through the tunnel and found the last page still damp at the corners.
There were three lists inside. Work to finish. Schools to consider. Things to ask Damian.

The third list was the shortest.
It held questions about the garden wall and whether the carpenter had kept the old kitchen shelf. Nothing about what she actually needed to know.
She sat looking at it for a long time.
Then she turned to a clean page and wrote one question.
What happened in the office?
She closed the notebook before she could answer it for him.
Outside, a delivery truck reversed with three sharp beeps. Someone laughed beneath the awning. The ordinary world went on giving people opportunities to speak to one another.
She wasn't ready to use hers.
That evening she asked the nurse whether the light in the sitting room could stay on.
"Of course."
The woman didn't ask why.
Clara slept with the bedroom door open and woke once to the creak of the chair beside the bed.
In the morning, nobody mentioned it. She found herself listening for that same quiet sound the next night.
The ordinary exchange steadied her more than consolation would have.

When she could walk comfortably again, she went downstairs for breakfast.
Owen brought noodles, an egg, and tea.
She looked at the tray.
"Coffee?"
"I can get some."
"You said that as though it required a permit."
He didn't answer quickly enough.
She leaned back.
"Where is he?"
Hope crossed Owen's face before he could hide it.
"Opening preparations. He hasn't left yet. I'll get him."
"You don't need to. Just ask when he's available to finish the paperwork."
Owen stopped.
Clara straightened a spoon that wasn't crooked.
"I've stayed long enough."
A shadow fell across the table.
Damian stood beside her with a small cup of coffee on a saucer.
He set it down without spilling a drop.
"When do you want to go?"
She looked up.
His suit was immaculate. His face was exhausted.
The question seemed to cost him more than she could understand.
She curled her fingers around the cup.
"This afternoon," she said.
