"A Dangerous Man to Call My Own" Chapter 48
The Boat on the River
From the car, Clara could see people drinking tea on the lower deck.
A man in a brown coat laughed over a card table. A server carried a tray between wicker chairs. Somewhere inside, a child complained about being bored.
Then officers came through the side entrance, and the ordinary afternoon changed.
The officer beside Clara spoke into her radio.
"Stay down if I tell you. Don't open the door."
Clara nodded.
She kept her hands folded so the woman wouldn't see them shake.

Gordon's real business was upstairs.
There were gambling tables behind locked doors, loans recorded under false company names, and men who had discovered too late how quickly a small debt could become an impossible one.
Nathan's team moved through the rooms with the quiet efficiency of people who had planned before coming.
Damian stayed behind them until someone shouted from the upper corridor.
Gordon had been found.
He was on the floor when Damian reached him, swearing at everyone who touched him.
"You brought police?"
Damian stopped beside the doorway.
"Where are the people you took?"
Gordon spat toward his shoes.
"You think you can do this to me?"
Nathan pulled him upright.
"Hands where I can see them."
A man struggled with an officer farther along the corridor. The movement drew Nathan's attention for half a second.
Gordon reached behind the drinks trolley.
Damian saw the gun before Nathan did.
He struck Gordon sideways into the wall and caught the wrist. A deafening crack filled the narrow space.
Plaster burst above the door.
Someone shouted.
Then the weapon was on the floor, an officer's boot beside it, Gordon facedown with his arms pulled behind him.
Damian stood against the wall, breathing hard.
Nathan looked at the mark above his head.
Then at Damian.
"You all right?"
"Ask me later. Where are the hostages?"
Gordon was no longer shouting.
He looked at Damian with a new, sick recognition.
"You."
Damian didn't answer.
"That mine job. You were—"
Nathan signaled an officer to take him away.
Gordon kept staring until the stairwell hid him.

In the vehicle outside, Clara heard the shot.
She sat forward.
The officer caught her sleeve.
"Stay here."
"Was that—"
"Stay here."
The radio crackled. Names. A request for medical support. Someone reporting the upper rooms secure.
Then a crash struck the hood of the car ahead.
Clara saw a body fall across the windshield.
For a second she couldn't make the image into a person.
Then she recognized the blue shirt.
Dylan.
Her hand went to the door handle. The officer stopped her and spoke urgently into the radio.
Clara couldn't hear the words.
The young man's face was turned toward the cars. His eyes were open.
He had been standing beside her at the trail entrance, offering to carry her camera.
Now he didn't move.

She tried to say Damian's name and couldn't get enough air.
The door opened from outside.
Damian crouched in front of her.
"Look at me."
She stared past him.
He moved into the line of her vision without touching her face.
"Clara. I'm here."
She caught his coat with both fists.
He let her pull him close.

Dylan had fallen while trying to escape the upper deck.
Martin was gone.
The two hotel employees were alive, injured and terrified, and Nathan's officers brought them down wrapped in blankets.
Gordon's records led to the abandoned mine he had used for an illegal weapons workshop. It was the operation Damian had been helping investigate when the ambush left him bleeding on the road years earlier.
The connection came out in pieces over the next two days.
Clara heard the beginning that night, at home, sitting on the bed while Damian took off his muddy shoes.
"The first time I found you," she said.
He looked up.
"Yes."
"It was him?"
"His people. His operation. We hadn't tied all of it together then."
She looked at the old scar beneath his ribs when his shirt lifted.
"Did you know at the opening?"
"I knew he was dirty. Not how much of the old network he still controlled."
"And now?"
"Now Nathan has the records. So does Callahan."
He sat beside her.
"I'm not going back into it. I'm telling them what I know. There's a difference."
She took his hand.
"Keep telling me which one you're doing."
"I will."
***
She couldn't sleep.
Each time she closed her eyes, something struck a windshield.
Damian called Walter rather than offering something from the drawer himself. The old doctor spoke to Clara, checked what she'd already taken, and arranged a proper visit the following morning.
"Sit with me," she asked after the call.
Damian lay beside her fully dressed.
She put his hand beneath her cheek.
After a while he got up for water and opened the bedside drawer for a clean coaster.
A small medicine box fell out.
He read the label and went still.
Clara saw his face.
"What?"
He held it out.
"Are we still trying?"
She sat up.
For one shameful second he thought the last few weeks had meant something different to her.
Then she took the box and frowned.
"That's old."
"How old?"
"Before we talked about a baby. Before the wedding here."
He looked at the other packages beneath it.
Her expression changed.
"I bought them when I didn't know what I wanted. I should have cleared the drawer."
He sat down again.
She touched his shoulder. This time she wanted him to hear the answer all the way through.
"If I change my mind, I'll tell you."
"You can," he said.
She looked at him for a moment, then took the little box from his hand and put it on the table where neither could pretend it wasn't there.

"I was afraid of having to want everything at once," she said. "School. You. A child. As if choosing one meant I'd failed the others."
He sat very still.
"You don't have to explain it so it sounds sensible to me."
"I want to explain it."
He nodded.
So she did. About money she'd once counted down to the last dollar, years she felt she'd lost, the fear that a door would close while she was busy learning to walk through another.
He listened without telling her he could buy a different door.
When she finished, he said, "I wanted somebody who'd still be there after I was gone."
She turned toward him.
He looked ashamed of the words.
"That isn't a good reason to put all the wanting on you."
She held his face between her hands.
"Then let's have better reasons. Both of us."
He rested his cheek against her palm.
The room was quiet long enough for her breathing to slow.
The plainness of it made her eyes sting.
"I know."
"Not because I caught you with a box. Because it's your mind."
She leaned against him.
They put the medicines aside for the doctor to review. For once neither tried to turn an unfinished question into proof of a betrayal.

At dawn, the hospital called.
Shelby was awake.
Clara dressed while Damian was at the police station giving another statement. She left him a message telling him where she was going and took Nate and Eli with her.
Owen met her at the hospital entrance.
"No immediate danger now," he said.
She let out a breath.
"That's something."
"There is another thing."
He looked unusually reluctant to continue.
"What?"
"She's pregnant."
Clara stopped beneath the hospital awning.
Rainwater dripped from the edge behind her.
For a moment she heard Shelby's voice in the office doorway, soft and shy, offering to take off a nightdress that wasn't hers.
Then she remembered her husband's face on the mountain.
She took a breath.
"All right," she said. "Let's talk to her."
