"A Dangerous Man to Call My Own" Chapter 50
The Promise
Her mother's hand tightened.
"Clara?"
Clara leaned forward so quickly the chair struck the bed.
"Yes. Mom. I'm here."
The woman looked past her toward the window.
"She'll be waiting. We shouldn't have left her so long."
Clara's hope broke and held at the same time.
She pressed the old, fragile fingers to her cheek.
"You can tell me. I'm listening."
Her mother smiled faintly.
"I was making her a sweater. Blue. She wanted pink, but I had the blue wool already. I told her the next one."
Clara remembered a basket beneath a window.
A little sleeve. A thread caught around her mother's finger.
"I remember."
"She's grown out of it by now."
The smile became apologetic.
"I can unpick it. Make it again."
At the doorway, Owen spoke urgently into his phone.
Clara barely heard him.
Her mother moved her head on the pillow.
"Is her father downstairs? Martin said he only needed to sign. Then we could go."
Clara went still.
"Sign what?"
"The buildings. The accounts. James wouldn't. Not to him. He said put them in Clara's name. She'd be safe that way."
The words came in pieces, separated by long, shallow breaths.
A room. A locked door. Her little girl being kept somewhere else until the papers were right.
"Lorraine was angry," her mother whispered. "We could hear her through the wall. I said I wanted my baby."
Clara bowed her head.
A staged accident. Missing people who hadn't been missing to the relatives paying for their confinement.
Years she could never give back.
"What happened to Dad?"
Her mother's eyes moved toward the empty space beside her.
"He was here."
"When?"
"He said he was tired."
The answer was so gentle that Clara understood before she wanted to.
Owen appeared beside her.
"Nathan's people are close. Come outside. We'll get her out properly."
"Two minutes."
"Clara."
She looked at him with a desperation he couldn't refuse.
"Please."
He went to the door and called Eli back from the hall.
Clara held her mother's hand.
"You didn't leave me," she said.
The woman turned toward her voice.
"I would never leave my little girl."
Clara put her face against the blanket and cried.
***
The disturbance began at the far end of the hallway.
A cart overturned. Someone shouted for a key. Nate called Owen's name from outside the barred window.
Owen stepped into the corridor to help Eli hold the doorway.
Behind him, Clara's mother gave a long, uneven breath.
"Mom?"
Clara lifted her head.
Her mother's fingers relaxed inside hers.
"Mom."
A hand closed over Clara's mouth from behind.
She struck the bedrail with her heel. The sound disappeared beneath the crash in the hall.
The floor moved under the edge of the bed.
Then the light was gone.
***
Damian arrived to find Owen bleeding above one eyebrow and the room empty except for a dead woman.

For several seconds he listened without moving.
Owen told him where he'd stood. Where Eli had been. How long he'd been outside the room.
"Less than a minute."
Damian went to the bed.
He touched the blanket where Clara's hand had rested.
Then he turned toward Nathan.
"Close the road. Nobody leaves."
Nathan was already giving orders.
The building was an unlicensed detention business dressed as a care home. People had been placed there by families who wanted them out of sight, then kept under names that made them difficult to find.
The operators had fled through a service exit before officers reached the rear yard.
Clara wasn't with them.
Damian searched the building with Nathan's team until there were no rooms left that hadn't been opened.
Then he started again.
***
On the third day, Owen repeated the conversation one more time.
The blue sweater. The papers. Her father's refusal to sign everything away.
Damian stood by the window, barely hearing the questions someone was asking behind him about food and sleep.
"Where was she kneeling?"
Owen pointed.
"Here."
Damian looked at the bed.
It had been moved during the search, but only a little. The wardrobe had been emptied. The desk stood pulled from the wall.
He crouched.
Near the bed leg, a line in the floor didn't follow the others.
He put his hand against it.
Air, faintly colder than the room.
"Nathan."
They moved the bed all the way aside.
The panel had been weighted from below.
When they finally lifted it, a narrow stair descended into darkness.
Damian didn't wait for the light.
***
Clara was alive.
At first he knew that only because she moved away when he reached for her.
He stopped.
"It's me."
She curled closer to the wall.
His throat closed.
"Clara."
A flashlight came down behind him. She hid her face from it, shaking.
He asked them to lower the beam.
Then he took off his coat and laid it around her without trying to lift her yet.
"You're coming home."
Her eyes moved toward his mouth as though the words were in a language she almost remembered.
He kept talking.
The house. The dogs. The blue cushions she had chosen. Anything that belonged to a world beyond the room.
At last her fingers closed on his sleeve.
He bent over her and cried so hard he couldn't see the stairs.
***
At the hospital, he stayed outside while the team examined her.
He had never hated a door more.
Nathan came to him with another officer.
Damian rose.
"Not now."
Nathan's face was gray.
"We have to speak to her lawyer."
"About what?"
Raymond Cole was dead.
Lorraine had named Clara as his killer.
There was a knife from the Grand Briar with Clara's fingerprints, photographs of a red handprint at the apartment, and images said to show her in Briarhaven during the days she had been missing.

Damian stared at Nathan.
"She was underground. I carried her out."
"I know."
"Then you know it's impossible."
"I know there's an allegation we have to deal with."
Damian took one step toward him.
The second officer moved.
Nathan lifted his hand.
"Let me do this in a way that keeps her here with doctors. Don't make me fight you too."
Damian looked at the closed hospital door.
Then he stepped back.
***
The weeks after that came apart in appointments and reports.
Clara spoke some days. Other days she stared at the light on the wall and couldn't bear a stranger moving behind her.
She remembered her mother in fragments. The blue wool. A hand on her hair. A voice saying she hadn't meant to leave.
She couldn't give a reliable account of the missing three days.
Damian hired lawyers and doctors. Owen found receipts, road records, staff schedules. Nathan asked for independent review of the disputed evidence.
The knife had been accessible in a room Shelby cleaned.
The print on the wall had been photographed without proper testing before renovation removed the surface. Lorraine insisted she had seen the attack. The camera images were poor but damaging, especially when shown beside Clara's clothing.
Martin remained missing.
It was a trap built from things that had once seemed ordinary.
Callahan came quietly one evening and spoke to Damian outside the hospital.
"Don't start making yourself the solution," he said.
Damian looked toward her window.
"Then find one."
"We are."
"Not fast enough."
Callahan's face hardened.
"If you invent a story, I may not be able to pull you out of it."
Damian said nothing.
***
In December, a routine examination brought news that should have made them happy.
Clara was pregnant.
When Damian came to see her, she had one hand resting low against her stomach.
For the first time in days, she smiled at him.
"We have a baby."
He stopped beside the chair.
She looked better. Not well, but closer to herself. Her eyes followed him. She knew his name.
He had spent the night at the airport with Julian, asking a man he had once wanted to destroy to do something he could no longer trust himself to manage.
Care for her. Keep her safe. Don't use her confusion to take what she hasn't offered.
Julian had looked at him for a long time.
Then he had agreed.
Now Damian sat opposite his wife and put a folder between them.
"I need you to sign."
She looked down.
Then up at him.
"No."
The word was perfectly clear.
Her lawyer shifted in the chair beside her.
Damian forced his face still.
"Clara."
She pushed the folder back.
"We stopped this. You promised me."
He looked at her hand on her stomach and felt something inside him tear.
"Things changed."
Her eyes filled.
"What things?"
He knew exactly how to hurt her. He had spent years learning where she was soft.
Now he used it.
"How do I even know it's mine?"
