"A Dangerous Man to Call My Own" Chapter 51
The Truth He Buried
Clara stared at him.
For a moment the question had no meaning. There was only his face, so familiar that she could have drawn it with her eyes closed, and a voice making it belong to somebody else.
"Don't," she said.
He looked away.
"I asked you something."
"You know the answer."
"Do I?"
Her lawyer leaned forward.
"We can stop this meeting."
Clara lifted a hand.
She wanted a reason. A shape she could put around the pain so it wouldn't spread through everything she had believed.
"Look at me."
He did.
His eyes were red. She thought he was tired of her.
"You told me there was only one of me."
He said nothing.
"On the mountain. You said—"
"People say things."
She stopped.
The room became terribly quiet.
He leaned back, performing indifference with such care that the effort almost broke him.
"I've spent enough trying to fix this."
"Since when have you cared about spending money on me?"
He could have survived an accusation better than that small, bewildered question.
He looked at the folder.
"Shelby doesn't make everything difficult."
Clara's face changed.
He went on before he lost his nerve.
"You wanted a reason. There's your reason."
"Her baby?"
The words barely reached him.
He nodded.
A lie so ugly he felt sick hearing it inside his own head.
Her hand moved from her stomach to the edge of the table.
"You made me ask you," she said.
He didn't understand at first.
"On the mountain. You made me feel foolish for believing her."
He held the arm of his chair beneath the table until his injured fingers began to hurt again.
"Sign the papers, Clara."
She looked at him for one more moment.
Then she took the pen.
Her name stayed inside the line. She was proud of that afterward, in a remote, useless part of her mind.
When she stood, he stood too.
She flinched away before he could help her.
He let his hand fall.
She left without looking back.
Only when the door closed did he bend forward, both hands over his mouth, trying to keep anybody from hearing him come apart.

A week later, Clara left the secure hospital unit under a revised care arrangement.
The case against her had weakened because Damian had given a detailed confession placing himself behind the two deaths the investigation now connected: Raymond and Martin, whose body had been found near the river.
His account included facts he shouldn't have known unless he was involved.
Some came from access he had obtained through the searches. Some were arrangements he had made to produce corroboration.
He called it taking responsibility.
Nathan called it a story with too many convenient answers.
Callahan called him a damned fool.
None of that reached Clara clearly.
She was told the accusation against her was being reconsidered. Julian took her to the lakeside house, where a nurse, a doctor, and an obstetric team could care for her without the locked doors she could no longer bear.

The new divorce papers moved through the hands of lawyers while she recovered. She signed what her own counsel explained and kept copies she couldn't bring herself to open.
Damian's assets remained hers.
She didn't notice how many there were.
***
Winter passed.
There were mornings she couldn't remember the previous day and afternoons when every hour of the basement returned with the smell of damp cloth.
Julian sat outside the room when she didn't want him inside.
He brought soup without asking her to be grateful. When she wanted to be left alone, he left the door open and stayed within calling distance.
She got better unevenly.
By March, she could read a whole book and remember the beginning when she reached the end. She could walk beside the lake without checking who was behind every tree.
Her pregnancy was impossible to mistake now.
She stood in front of the mirror one morning and cried with a clarity that frightened her more than confusion had.
At the next appointment, she asked to speak to the obstetrician alone about her choices.
Julian waited outside.
When she came out, she was exhausted, angry, and no longer willing to let anyone speak as though her future had been arranged without her.
"You should have told me everything," she said.
He stood.
"I told you what I knew."
"About him?"
Julian looked away.
"He didn't want to be part of this," she said. "That's what he told me. You could have found him. You could have made him say it to my face when I could understand."
"He couldn't come."
"Why?"
The question stayed between them.
Julian had spent months trying to honor a promise without deciding which part of it was becoming another wrong.
"Clara."
"What did you promise him?"
He closed his eyes.
She waited.
At last he said, "That I would get you somewhere safe. That I wouldn't leave you alone."
"When?"
"Before he brought you the papers."
She didn't move.
Then she went upstairs for the folder.
***
The schedules ran for pages.
Property. Shares. Income. Available funds. Everything he could move beyond the reach of what he was about to do.
Clara read until the words blurred.
Then she called Owen.
He answered so quickly she realized he had been waiting for this call for months.
"Where is he?"
Owen said her name.
She cut him off.
"Where?"
***
Nathan met them at his office.
Damian had been charged. The confession had done its work too well, reinforced by Martin's death and a network of people happy to let Wolfe become the name attached to everything.
There was no simple conversation that could undo it.
Clara listened with both hands resting on her stomach.
"He confessed to protect me."
"I believe that," Nathan said.
"Then why is he still there?"
"Because belief isn't the file I need to put in front of the people reviewing it."

He pushed a photograph toward her, only after asking whether she wanted to see it.
Martin beside the river. A time window. A night in December.
Clara looked at the date.
Then at Julian.
"He was with you."
Julian bent over the page.
For a moment he said nothing.
Then he took out his phone.
Airport records. A restaurant receipt. The entrance log at the apartment where they had talked until dawn.
"Yes," he said. "He collected me that night. We were together."
Nathan was already writing.
"I need a formal statement. Everything you can document."
Clara leaned back, breathing too quickly.
For the first time since December, something had moved.
***
Walter came to look at the older evidence.
He didn't pretend retirement had made him the answer to every question. He asked which samples had actually been tested, who had handled the knife, and why a photograph of a mark had been treated as proof of its substance.
Clara looked at the handprint.
Then she reached across the table and held the picture closer.
"That isn't blood."
Nobody spoke.
"It's paint."
She remembered the cold hallway. The demand written across the door. Red on her palm, nowhere to wipe it, the wall beside the entrance.
The day Damian came with a power saw.
"I made that years ago. Before we were married."
Owen stood so quickly his chair struck the wall.
"The repair invoice. The locksmith photos."
He called the old contractor while Clara sat with the photograph in her hand.
Within an hour, they had a dated image from the door replacement. The red print was visible at the edge of the frame.
Long before Raymond died.
Clara began to cry.
This time she didn't apologize for it.
***
Lorraine disappeared before she could be questioned again.
A week later, authorities identified her remains after a railway death in another state. The news closed one path and made everyone wonder who had wanted it closed.
Martin couldn't answer. Dylan couldn't answer. The case had been designed around people disappearing before they could contradict it.
Callahan came to Nathan's office after dark.
Clara stood when she recognized him.
"You can help him."
"I'm trying."
"Don't say that if you mean waiting."
His expression softened for a second.
"I mean getting him through a review that reaches farther than this office. There are people from the old operation in this. If they know what he's giving us, prison isn't the only place he's in danger."
She gripped the back of a chair.
"Then let me see him."
"Not tonight."
"He'll think I haven't come."
Callahan looked away.
It was the first answer that frightened her more than the others.
***
The application to stay the proceedings went in before the transfer order.
Nathan told Clara that much himself.
"We're not finished. Don't believe anybody who tells you otherwise without speaking to me."
She repeated the words back because he asked her to.
Then, days later, a message arrived from a number using his name.
The attached notice looked official. It said the sentence had been carried out under a sealed order.
She called him. No answer.
She called Callahan. The line went through a switchboard that would confirm nothing.
Owen took the phone from her before she could read it a fifth time.
"We haven't verified this."
She looked at him.
He kept speaking. She saw his mouth move and heard almost none of it.
Julian came back from Westbridge. Vince left again to find somebody who would answer him. Owen stayed beside her through a night in which she did not sleep.
By morning, all she could remember was Damian kneeling on a wet path with blood on his hands, telling her there was only one of her.
She had believed the worst thing he said because he knew exactly how to make it sound true.
Now there might be no one left to ask why.
She folded the little blue sweater she'd begun making and put it in a drawer.
