"A Dangerous Man to Call My Own" Chapter 52
A Man to Call Her Own
By June, the garden had grown thick enough to hide the lower windows.
The yellow dog slept beneath the terrace table. Her surviving puppies were almost as large as she was now, though they still followed her around the garden as if she might explain the world to them.
Clara sat outside with a light blanket over her knees.
Owen brought breakfast.
She ate because the baby moved when she was hungry, and because the nurse had learned to stand quietly beside her until she picked up the spoon.
She was not trying to die.
She simply couldn't imagine the shape of a life she wanted to enter.
Owen had stopped asking her to imagine it. He asked whether she wanted eggs. Whether the chair was comfortable. Whether he should move the umbrella.
She answered those questions.
They were small enough.
***
Nathan called shortly before noon.
Clara listened without moving.
Raymond's killer had been identified.
Shelby's biological father had left a statement with a lawyer before his own death. Peter Reed had learned what Raymond had done to his daughter and killed him. Records from the lawyer's closed practice had finally reached the review team.
Details in the statement matched evidence that had never been made public.
The knife had been placed afterward. Lorraine's account was false. The woman in Clara's clothes on the cameras wasn't Clara.
"We're clearing the record," Nathan said.
Clara stared at the garden.
"And him?"
A pause.
"I need to speak to you in person. There are things—"
She ended the call.
Owen came through the terrace doors as the phone fell into her lap.
"Clara?"
She looked at him.
"She knew."
He didn't ask who.
"I have to see her."
***
Owen refused to let her drive.
She didn't argue. She wanted to get there, not win another unnecessary battle over how.
They went to Briarhaven with a nurse and an overnight bag. On the way, she sent Nathan a message telling him where she would be.
He replied that he was coming.
For once she didn't mistake telling someone her plans for giving away the right to make them.
Shelby was still in Lorraine's old apartment.
The room where Raymond had died had been sealed and cleared long ago. Other rooms remained crowded with the unremarkable remains of a family: chipped cups, a television that hummed too loudly, bills held beneath a kitchen magnet.
Clara stood in the doorway and looked at her cousin.
Shelby had grown thin. The empty sleeve was folded and pinned. Her eyes dropped to Clara's stomach before they rose to her face.
"You came at last."
Clara crossed the room.
"You knew who killed Raymond."
Shelby said nothing.
"Your father."
A tiny movement at her mouth.
"He was angry."
"You could have told them."
"Would you have listened to me?"
"You could have told the police."

Shelby turned away.
Clara caught the back of a chair because her legs no longer felt steady.
"Damian fed you. Found you work. Paid for your treatment."
"Because of you."
The answer was immediate and full of old bitterness.
"Always because of you. Never because he saw me."
Clara looked at the pinned sleeve.
Then back at her face.
"Did he ever touch you?"
Shelby gave a small, terrible laugh.
"You still need to ask?"
"Answer me."
"No."
The word left no room to hide.
"He never looked at me that way. Not once."
Clara closed her eyes.
The mountain. His disbelief. Her own relief, so briefly held before he used the same lie to drive her away.
"The baby?"
Shelby's face went empty.
"Gone."
"Whose was it?"
For a long time there was only the hum of the television.
Then Shelby said Raymond's name.
Owen turned toward the window.
Clara sat down because she couldn't remain standing.
The pregnancy. Peter Reed's anger. Lorraine's lies. A family trying to move its shame and violence into somebody else's life.
"And the cameras?"
"Martin brought your clothes. Told me where to walk. He said you wouldn't remember anything."
"You helped him."
Shelby stared at the floor.
"I was frightened."
Clara heard the truth in it.
It didn't make the other truth disappear.
"So was I."
Her cousin began to cry.
Clara watched without moving to comfort her.
For years she had thought every debt between them had to be paid by one woman forgiving the other. Now she understood there were things she could acknowledge without returning to the room where they happened.
"Owen will call your lawyer," she said. "Tell the truth this time. All of it."
Shelby looked up.
"And afterward?"
Clara rested a hand against her stomach.
"I don't know what your afterward looks like. I can't keep making one for you."
She stood.
Pain tightened low across her abdomen.
She waited for it to pass.
It didn't pass quickly enough.
***
At the hospital, everything became bright and busy.
The nurse who had traveled with them spoke to the team. Owen gave her records to somebody in blue scrubs. Clara answered questions, then stopped trying to remember which questions she'd answered.
Labor had begun several weeks earlier than expected. The hospital called in the neonatal team as well as the obstetrician.
There were hours when she could think, and stretches in which thought narrowed to breathing through the next contraction.
She wanted her mother.
Then she wanted Damian with such force that she turned her face into the pillow and sobbed.
Owen sat beside her until the team needed space.
"I should have known," she whispered.
"Clara."
"He gave me everything. Even when he was saying—"
She couldn't finish.
Owen took her hand.
"You believed the words he chose to hurt you. That wasn't your fault."
She shook her head.

He didn't argue. He stayed until someone called him into the corridor.
***
Nathan stood outside with Walter.
Behind them was a tall man wearing a dark shirt and a cap pulled low over his face.
For a moment Owen looked straight at him without understanding.
Then he stopped breathing.
The man removed the cap.
His hair was shorter. A pale scar ran into the line above one ear. He was thinner, and he held his left side carefully when he moved.
His eyes were the same.
Owen put one hand against the wall.
"You bastard," he whispered.
Damian bowed his head.
"I know."
Vince arrived at a run and stopped so abruptly his shoes slid.
Nobody told him to be quiet.
He couldn't have spoken if he'd tried.
Nathan drew them away from the door long enough to say what they needed to know.
The review had been stayed before any sentence could be carried out. The notice sent to Clara had been forged, using Nathan's name and material taken from the compromised case system.
During a transfer, men connected to Gordon's remaining network had attacked the vehicle carrying Damian. Their own message afterward had claimed everyone inside was dead.
Damian had survived with severe injuries. Callahan's people had moved him into protected medical care under another identity while investigators worked out which official channels were still safe.
Nathan had been kept outside part of it. The men who knew the alias had refused to confirm a location to anyone else while the case and the threat remained active.
"He was unconscious for weeks," Nathan said. "Then recovering. The final identification and clearance came through before we could bring him out openly."
Owen stared at Damian.
"She thought you were dead."
Damian closed his eyes.
"I didn't know about the notice until I could talk properly. When I knew, I asked them to tell her."
"You should have found a way."
"Yes."
No excuse followed.
Nathan touched the folder beneath his arm.
The airport alibi had broken Damian's false account. The old paint photograph had dismantled the case against Clara. Further records showed Martin had died during his own attempted escape along the river after a violent dispute with the men helping him hide. He hadn't been where Damian claimed to have killed him.
The confession was false. Its supporting details had come from access to the investigation, not the crime.
There would still be statements, consequences, and a life conducted more quietly under the protection arrangement Callahan had secured.
There had been no execution. No resurrection. Only a man who had nearly died and people who had kept the truth locked away too long.
From the room, Clara cried out.
Damian turned before anyone else moved.
"Can I go in?"
The obstetrician came to the door, looked at him, and nodded after speaking briefly with Nathan.
"She needs someone she trusts. If that's you, come with me."

Clara heard her name.
She had heard it in dreams for months. Sometimes whispered into her hair. Sometimes shouted from a road behind a departing ambulance.
This time she didn't open her eyes.
"Don't," she whispered.
A hand rested beside hers on the bed.
Not taking. Waiting.
She knew that hand even before she saw the scars.
Her eyes opened.
Damian knelt beside her.
For a long moment she simply looked.
Then her face crumpled.
"I finally found you."
He shook his head, tears spilling before he could speak.
"I'm here."
"You're not angry?"
"No."
"I didn't come. I thought—"
"I know what you thought. I'm sorry."
She moved her fingers across his cheek.
Warm skin. Rough jaw. The wetness beneath his eyes.
"I never said it," she whispered. "I kept thinking there would be time."
He bent closer.
"We have time."
"I love you."
His breath broke.
She held his face as tightly as her trembling hands allowed.
"I love you. I should have told you when you could hear it."
He pressed his forehead against hers.
"I can hear you."
Another contraction took her breath. He stayed while the nurse guided her through it, one hand beneath hers, the other carefully out of everybody's way.
When she could speak again, she looked at him with sudden, fierce clarity.
"You don't ever do that to me again. You don't decide I have to hate you so you can disappear."
"Never again."
"No more saving me by leaving me alone."
He nodded, crying openly now.
"No more."
She closed her eyes and held his hand.
When the team needed to help the birth along, she let them move her, let them explain, answered when they asked her questions.
Damian stayed where they told him to stay.
And when their daughter cried, he made a sound of wonder so helpless that Clara began laughing through her tears.
***
The baby had dark hair and an expression of profound dissatisfaction with everything outside her blanket.
Vince said she looked exactly like her father.
Damian told him to get out.
Nobody left.
Owen stood at the foot of the bed, his glasses misted, while Walter accepted a cup of tea and insisted he had come only to make sure everybody remembered to eat.
Nathan put the final papers in a folder and left them unopened on the windowsill.
There would be time for those. The December divorce petition had never reached a final order; their lawyers were withdrawing it. For all their terrible efforts to part, they were still married.
Clara watched Damian hold their daughter.
His hands had carried timber, weapons, broken doors, her body through rain. Around the baby, they looked impossibly careful.
"You're allowed to breathe," she told him.
"I am breathing."
"Not much."
He looked down at the small face.
"She's little."
"I noticed."
The baby opened her mouth and yawned.
Damian looked at Clara as though this might be a medical event requiring interpretation.
She laughed again.
He smiled then, really smiled, and she felt the room become somewhere they could begin.
***
The baby spent her first days under closer observation, with feeding measured and every small gain celebrated. Damian learned to change a diaper before he learned to stop asking whether each sleepy noise was normal. They went home when the doctors said they could.
Not to a crowd. Not to a public celebration. To the lakeside house, the blue cushions, the dogs who had been instructed repeatedly by Vince to behave with dignity and ignored him at once.
Clara's mother's remains had been laid beside her father's after the records established where he was buried. Clara visited when she was strong enough, carrying flowers and a photograph of the baby.
She told them she knew now.
Then she went home to the people waiting for her.
Shelby's statement became part of the corrected record. She faced the consequences of the impersonation and received medical support through arrangements that no longer required Clara to be her only future.
Julian came once, brought a book for Clara and a gift for the baby, and left without asking for more than a place in their lives they could honestly give.
She thanked him.
This time neither confused gratitude with a promise.
The university agreed to consider a later start. Cambridge remained a possibility, as did the program with Whitmore. Clara put the letters on the dining table and went through them with her husband while the baby slept upstairs.
"Which one do you want?" he asked.
"I want to think about it."
"Then we'll think about it."
She smiled.
He had business courses of his own to finish. Owen had made a schedule. Vince had finally enrolled in cooking classes and was insufferable about knives nobody allowed him to use near the dining table.
Their lives were not magically simple.
They were theirs.
***
One evening, rain moved across the lake.
Clara stood at the nursery window holding their daughter against her shoulder. Damian came in with a warm blanket and draped it around them both.
"Cold?"
She leaned back against him.
"Not anymore."
He kissed the top of her head.
For a while they watched the water together.
Then the baby stirred, and Clara turned, placing the small, sleepy weight in his arms.
He looked down, then up at her.
She touched the old scar above his brow.
"Come downstairs when she's asleep."
"Will you wait for me?"
She smiled at him, certain now of what she was promising.
"I'm home," she said. "I'm staying."
