"THE BOY WHO WOULDN'T KNEEL" Chapter 1
THIRTY SECONDS
"Everybody down. Now."
The woman beside the checkout dropped so quickly that her chin struck her shopping cart. A jar broke. Somewhere behind Noah Bennett, a child began to scream.
Noah stayed on his feet.
The man with the gun stopped between the candy display and register four. His mask had slipped beneath one eye. He dragged it up with two fingers, keeping the other hand steady.
"That means you, kid."
Noah looked at the clock above the pharmacy window.
6:47.
Under it, a small amber light blinked twice.
His father had shown him that light last summer, before the funeral. They had been buying hamburger buns. Noah had asked why the little lamp was orange when all the others were green.
His father had put down the buns.
If that one changes, find the gray door. Don't wait for me.
Now the light changed.
"You've got thirty seconds to leave," Noah said.
His voice sounded strange in the emptied space above the customers. Too clear. He wished he had said it quietly. He wished, desperately, that his father had told him what happened after thirty seconds.
The gunman stared at him.
Near the entrance, the second robber laughed once. He was thinner, with a red hood under his jacket and white paint on one boot.
"Listen to this little guy."
"Get the bag, Sam."
"Don't use my name."
The first robber turned just enough to look at him. Sam stopped smiling.
Noah could see the gray door beyond the bottled water, but there were three checkout lanes between him and it. The gunman stood in the nearest one. A woman lay across a baby carrier at his feet.
Noah's knees wanted to bend. He pressed his toes into the ends of his sneakers.
"Twenty-five seconds," he said.
"Until what?"
"The inside shutter closes."
The robber glanced toward the glass entrance. Beyond it, shopping carts rolled slowly across the parking lot in the wind.
"Those doors?"
Noah shook his head.
He had seen the shutter once, during a power failure. It came down between the entrance vestibule and the first row of checkouts. His father had taken him out through the bakery instead.
"Inside," he repeated. "Over your friend's head."
On the floor behind register four, the manager lifted his face. His name tag said ALAN. Noah had seen him carrying boxes at Christmas, wearing a Santa hat with the white ball missing.
Alan looked at the shutter housing, then at Noah.
He looked frightened in a new way.
The robber noticed.
"What did you press?"
"Nothing," Alan said.
"Get up."
"Please. There are children."
The gun swung toward him.
Noah spoke before he could stop himself.
"He's not the one closing it."
The weapon returned to Noah. The woman over the baby carrier squeezed her eyes shut.
The robber moved closer. His coat smelled of cigarettes and wet leather.

"And you know who is?"
Noah thought of the message on the little phone in his pocket.
His father was supposed to be here.
If the message was a lie, there was nobody coming. Aunt Rachel was at home making chicken, believing he was at a friend's house. His school backpack was in a locker by the entrance. He had not even brought it with him.
"Twenty seconds," he said.
"Derek," Sam called. "Should I check?"
The first robber's head snapped around.
Derek.
Noah knew that name.
Not from a conversation he was supposed to hear. From a photograph his father had held out across the kitchen table, one thumb covering the bottom edge.
You ever see this man, you go straight to an adult you know. Don't speak to him. Don't let him see you looking.
The photograph had shown a man outside a restaurant. No mask. Dark hair brushed backward, a thick ridge beside his nose.
The man before him had the same ridge.
Noah had already broken every instruction except the one about the gray door.
"Go look," Derek told Sam.
Sam hurried back to the entrance, stepping over an abandoned carton of strawberries. He reached up toward the shutter housing.
Something clicked.
The sound traveled through the ceiling, heavy and definite.
Then the metal curtain began to descend.
Sam ducked away from it.
"Derek."
Nobody answered.
The shutter scraped downward. A man on the floor whispered a prayer into his hands. Alan stared at the controls behind his register as if they belonged to another store.
For one second Noah was so relieved he nearly cried.
It was working.
Somebody had seen the light too.
Derek caught that change in his face.
"You think this is funny?"
He seized Noah's sweatshirt at the throat and dragged him forward. Noah's shoes slipped in spilled cooking oil. His collar tightened against his windpipe.
"Who's doing it?"
"I don't know."
"You just told me."
"I told you it would close."
Derek pushed him toward the entrance.
"Then tell them to open it."
Sam crouched beneath the descending shutter, judged the gap, and backed away. It landed with a sound Noah felt in his teeth.
The store seemed smaller afterward.
The automatic glass doors beyond the metal still slid open for a customer outside. A woman with a shopping bag stood looking in, unable to understand what she was seeing.
Sam hit the shutter with his palm.
"Hey! Call somebody!"
Derek swore at him to be quiet.
Noah tried to breathe without pulling against his collar. Derek's fingers were twisting the fabric tighter. He could see a rough patch on the man's wrist where an old tattoo had been burned away.
His father had described that too.
Derek Voss.
There had been a picture in the kitchen. There had been an instruction. There had been a father who knew exactly what to do with a man like this.
Then there had been a closed coffin and Aunt Rachel holding Noah upright beside it.
"Please," Noah said. He hated how the word came out. "You're hurting me."
Derek looked down at his fist and loosened it slightly.
Then he pulled Noah's hood back.
"Wearing something? A camera?"
He turned Noah's head sharply, searching his ear.
His thumb stopped against the small pale scar behind it.
Noah remembered rain. His father carrying him from a car. Glass in his hair. He had been six, and every time he asked what had happened, the answer had changed a little.
Derek's grip went still.
He tilted Noah's face toward the light.
"How old are you?"
Noah said nothing.
"What's your last name?"
Sam came up behind him. "We need another way out."
Derek ignored him.
Noah watched recognition arrive. It did not make the man kinder. His eyes narrowed, and his fingers closed again, this time around Noah's arm.
"Bennett," he said.
Noah felt the word enter the store like another gunshot.
"You're his boy."
