"The Billionaire Husband My Sister Humiliated" Chapter 8 — The Father Who Was Never Dead
Emily recognized her father by his hands.
The man seated beside the window was thinner than Richard Bennett had ever been, his hair nearly white, his shoulders bent. But he held a folded photograph between the same long fingers that had once taught her to tie fishing knots.
“Dad?”
He lifted his head slowly.
For one terrible moment, there was no recognition. Then his lips parted.
“Emmy?”
Emily crossed the room and knelt beside him. He touched her cheek as though checking whether she was real.
“My little girl,” he whispered.
She broke into tears. “I thought you were dead.”
“So did they,” he said, then shook his head in confusion. “No. They told me you were gone.”
The reunion took place after a court-supervised welfare review established that Richard could receive visitors and that the existing guardianship required investigation. Medical professionals were evaluating his capacity and treatment. Emily wanted to carry him out immediately, but she listened when his physician explained that abrupt changes could harm him.
Alexander stood near the doorway, giving father and daughter privacy.
Richard noticed him. “Who is that?”
“My husband. Alexander.”
Richard looked surprised. “You got married?”
“Two years ago.”
“Was I there?”
Emily shook her head. Richard's face crumpled.
“I'm sorry,” he whispered.
“You didn't know.”
“I should have been there.”
Alexander approached. “It's an honor to meet you, sir.”
Richard studied him. “Do you make her happy?”
“I try every day.”
Emily asked Richard whether he wanted to return to the Greenwich mansion. He shook his head immediately. “Too many locked doors,” he said. She promised not to make him go. They discussed a smaller home with sunlight and a garden, close enough for regular visits. He asked whether she would still come if he never recovered every memory. “Of course,” she answered. “I didn't come for testimony.” His face relaxed. On the way out, Ruth told Emily that Richard had begun asking for music again. Emily found a recording of one of his favorite old songs and sent it to the nurse through the approved patient channel. That night Ruth reported he had hummed along. It was not evidence of a crime or a breakthrough in court. It was simply a father remembering a tune, and Emily treasured it.
“Good. Keep trying.”
Emily laughed through tears. It sounded exactly like her father.
Over several visits, Richard's memories emerged in fragments. He had confronted Charles about missing funds. Margaret persuaded him to meet a specialist after claiming he was behaving erratically. Richard remembered becoming dizzy after a drink, waking in an unfamiliar room, and being told he had suffered a neurological episode.
He recalled resisting medication and asking for Emily. Staff told him she had died in an accident. He had eventually stopped asking aloud.
During another visit Richard asked Emily about the city. He remembered an old bookstore that had closed years earlier and a restaurant where he used to take her mother. Emily showed him photographs of the neighborhood as it looked now. He was delighted by a new public garden and saddened by a demolished theater. They talked until he grew tired. When she stood to leave, he asked her to promise she would return. Emily leaned down and kissed his forehead. “Tomorrow,” she said. He smiled. She had spent eleven years wondering whether he wanted her. Now he was asking her not to go, and the simple request felt like a miracle. Before leaving, Emily asked Ruth what Richard liked to eat. Ruth said he always requested apple pie but rarely finished it. Emily promised to bring a slice from the diner they used to visit. Richard overheard and called from his room that she should bring two. She laughed. For the first time, planning tomorrow felt more important than investigating yesterday. The feeling was unfamiliar and precious.

Ruth Palmer provided investigators with copies of complaints she had filed about his treatment. Nora identified payments from a Mercer-controlled entity to an intermediary involved in the guardianship. The evidence was serious, though investigators cautioned that every allegation still required verification.
At the Greenwich estate, Margaret learned Richard had received his daughter.
“It's over,” she told Charles on the phone.
“Not if he can't prove what happened.”
Richard asked for a photograph of Alexander and Emily on their wedding day. Emily found one on her phone: a courthouse ceremony, a borrowed bouquet, and two people laughing because it had started raining. Richard studied it for a long time. “You look happy,” he said. “I was,” she replied. “I still am, mostly.” He handed back the phone. “Then I'm grateful someone was there when I couldn't be.” Alexander turned away to hide the emotion on his face.
“He remembers.”
“Memory isn't a bank record.”
Margaret looked toward the hallway. Victoria was standing there, listening.
“You said he was never coming back,” Victoria whispered.
Margaret ended the call. “Go to your room.”
“I'm thirty-one.”
“Then act like it. Say nothing.”
Richard's doctor explained that recovery would not move in a straight line. Some mornings he could recall the company he founded in exact detail. On others he confused dates and tired quickly. Emily promised herself not to treat him as a witness first and a father second. She brought an old board game from their childhood and sat with him for an hour without asking a single question about Margaret. Richard lost twice and accused her of cheating. She laughed so hard that Ruth came to check on them. Later Richard asked whether Emily had finished college. She told him about her degree, her first apartment, and the job she loved before the scandal. He listened as if each fact were a gift. “I missed so much,” he said. Emily answered, “Then we'll make new memories.” Outside the room, Alexander quietly arranged transportation for the next visit and refused a reporter's request for a photograph.
Victoria's eyes filled with a strange mixture of fear and resentment. “You promised the company would be mine.”
“And it will be, if you keep your mouth shut.”
Back at the recovery center, Emily showed Richard the purported confession. He held it close to his eyes.
“I didn't sign this willingly,” he said. “I remember a page. Charles told me it was permission to contact my daughter. I was confused. They wouldn't let me read it.”
Eleanor recorded the statement with Richard's consent and arranged for independent evaluation. She warned Emily that his account alone might not settle the issue.
“I don't need it to settle everything today,” Emily said. “I need people to hear him.”
Richard squeezed her hand. “There is something else.”
Emily leaned closer.
“Victoria came to see me.”
Emily froze. “When?”
“Years ago. She was wearing a red coat. I remember because she stood beside the window and wouldn't look at me.”
“Maybe you dreamed it.”
“I begged her to tell you. She said I had made my choice.”
Emily felt cold. Victoria had told everyone she grieved their father. She had given speeches on the anniversary of his death.
Richard's eyes filled with tears. “She knew, Emmy.”
Emily looked at Alexander, hoping he could find a gentler explanation.
He said nothing.
Richard whispered the words again.
“Victoria knew I was alive.”
