"The Woman They Shouldn’t Have Slapped" Chapter 2
Her Father’s Daughter
Daniel returned with a cold compress, the company secretary, and a woman from building security who asked Amina’s permission before taking photographs.
Amina appreciated the question more than she expected.
“Both sides,” she said. “For comparison.”
The company secretary, Helen Shaw, stood with her tablet clutched against her ribs.
“I should have introduced you when you arrived.”
“You were collecting the revised papers.”
“I could have left someone with you.”
Amina lowered the compress.
“Helen, I don’t need an escort to keep people from hitting me.”
Helen swallowed. “No. Of course not.”
Outside, chairs scraped. The meeting was being formally adjourned. The investors would receive a revised date after the directors met to consider the review.
Daniel sat opposite Amina.
“The release is on hold. Our team has preserved everything we received. Helen is issuing instructions for the company records.”
“Any objection?”
“Grant Whitmore asked whether you intended to destabilize the business over a personal disagreement.”
Amina laughed once, without humor.
“Did he.”
“Richard is on his way.”
“Of course he is.”
Her phone lit up with her mother’s name. Amina watched it ring, then answered.
“Are you eating with us on Sunday?” Mariama asked.
The ordinary question almost undid her.
“Yes, Mom.”
“You sound tired.”
“I’ve had a difficult meeting.”
“Did you eat before it?”
“Not yet.”
Her mother sighed. “You cannot run on coffee and being correct.”
Amina closed her eyes. “Apparently not.”
After she hung up, Daniel quietly pushed a packet of crackers across the desk. She took them.
Richard arrived twenty minutes later, still wearing his coat. At sixty-three, he had the kind of cultivated ease that usually made people hurry to reassure him.
Nobody reassured him tonight.
“Amina. I am appalled.”
She left him standing long enough to remove his coat, then indicated a chair.
“Where is your daughter?”
“In my office.”
“Then she can remain there until security has taken her statement.”
His gaze shifted to Daniel.
“Surely we can discuss this without making it a formal incident.”
“It is already an incident,” Amina said. “Formality is not what made it one.”
Richard sat.
“She thought you were someone who had wandered in.”
“Someone she was entitled to hit?”
“No. That isn’t what I meant.”
“What did you mean?”
He opened his mouth, then closed it.
Daniel placed the security report on the desk. Richard looked at the photograph attached to it. His shoulders changed.
For the first time, Amina believed he was actually seeing the slap instead of its consequences for his family.
“She’ll apologize.”
“She can offer an apology. I’ll decide what to do with it.”
“And the financing?”
“There it is.”
Richard looked up sharply.
“We have employees. Suppliers. Obligations.”
“Yes. Which is why the review began six weeks before your daughter touched me.”
He went still.
Daniel slid a second document toward him. A request for payment records. Dates. Unanswered follow-ups. A list of conditions attached to the next funding installment.

“You knew we were waiting for these,” Amina said.
“I thought finance had dealt with it.”
“Finance told us your office was still reviewing disclosure.”
Richard looked down again.
The silence lasted long enough for the office clock to become irritating.
“I’ll make sure you get them.”
“By noon tomorrow.”
He nodded.
“As for Vivian,” Amina continued, “what position does she actually hold?”
“She advises the foundation on events.”
“Does that authorize her to attend shareholder meetings?”
“Not formally.”
“Or direct employees?”
“No.”
“Then Helen will correct the access list.”
Richard’s jaw tightened. “She’s been coming here since she was a child.”
“She is thirty-two.”
He looked away.
A knock interrupted them. Helen entered carrying Vivian’s visitor credential in a clear envelope.
“She asked whether her father could take care of this.”
Richard stared at the badge.
“What did you tell her?”
“That I needed her statement.”
“Good,” he said, so quietly Amina almost missed it.
After he left, Amina stood at the window. Downstairs, traffic moved through the city without the slightest interest in what had happened thirty-two floors above it.
The door opened again.
Nora stood there with a security officer.
“I’m sorry to bother you.”
“You aren’t.”
Nora held a company phone.
“I was testing the conference feed when she came in. The room camera was on. The recording saved automatically.”
Daniel rose.
“Have you shared it?”
“No. Security told me to bring the device straight here.”
“Thank you,” Amina said.
Nora’s eyes flickered to her cheek.
“I should have done more.”
“You tried to intervene. I saw you.”
The young woman exhaled.
Daniel accompanied her to arrange preservation of the recording. Amina finally opened the crackers.
Her phone buzzed with a message from her finance director, Priya Shah.
Found the missing vendor link. Sending secure file now.
The attachment contained a registration document and a payment table. A consulting company had received $2.4 million through contracts with Whitmore subsidiaries.
Its registered owner was Ethan Cole’s brother.
Amina remembered Ethan’s expression when he finally recognized her.
Not embarrassment. Not concern for Vivian.
Fear.
She put down the crackers and called Priya.
“Start with the first payment,” she said. “Tell me exactly what we can prove.”
