"The Woman They Shouldn’t Have Slapped" Chapter 3
An Unfortunate Misunderstanding
At seven the next morning, a request for comment reached Diop Capital.
A business reporter wanted to know whether Amina had threatened to withdraw financing after “a heated exchange with a junior foundation volunteer.”
Amina read the email twice.
Junior. Volunteer. Heated exchange.
Somebody had been busy while she slept.
Daniel stood in her doorway with two coffees.
“Please tell me you haven’t answered.”
“I was deciding which word annoyed me most.”
He handed her the stronger coffee.
“The reporter gave us until eleven.”
“Ask what evidence supports that description.”
By nine, Richard had requested a call. Grant joined without being invited.
Grant Whitmore’s face filled half the conference screen. He resembled his older brother after the patience had been removed.
“We need to lower the temperature,” he began.
Amina leaned back.
“Good morning to you, too.”
“This is becoming a distraction from the financing.”
“The outstanding financial records are the reason the financing is on hold.”
“Which is precisely what the press should hear.”
“Then stop telling them something else.”
Richard rubbed his forehead.
“We don’t know who contacted anyone.”
Daniel turned his laptop toward the screen.
“The reporter forwarded the statement offered to him. It came from the foundation’s communications address.”
Amina watched Richard read it.
Vivian’s name appeared at the bottom.
“It says,” Daniel continued, “that Ms. Diop became verbally aggressive when asked to identify herself, and Ms. Whitmore reacted defensively.”
Grant sighed.
“She shouldn’t have written that.”
“Is it false?” Amina asked.
“I wasn’t in the room.”
“Then let’s look at the room.”
Daniel played the preserved recording.
The image showed Vivian entering with Ethan. It showed Nora trying to intervene. It carried every word.
Catering is downstairs.
You people always make everything difficult.
The slap sounded smaller through the laptop speakers. Somehow that made it worse.
Amina kept her eyes on the screen. She would not watch herself turn away.
When the recording ended, Richard had taken off his glasses.
Grant spoke first.
“There’s no need to circulate that.”
“There was no need to invent a different event,” Amina said.
Richard looked toward someone outside the camera frame.
“Get Vivian.”
They waited. Amina could hear footsteps, then Vivian’s voice before she appeared.
“I told them it was a misunderstanding.”
“Sit down,” Richard said.
Vivian saw Amina on the screen. Her mouth tightened.
“I was going to apologize.”
“You sent a statement instead.”
“I didn’t name you.”
“You described the person who holds your company’s financing as aggressive. You knew exactly whom you meant.”
Vivian looked at her father.
Richard did not look back.
Daniel spoke in the calm tone Amina recognized as his least forgiving.
“You will correct the statement to everyone who received it. We will provide an accurate response to the reporter. Ms. Diop has not authorized public release of the recording at this time.”
Vivian’s eyes filled.
“If that gets out, people will destroy me.”

Amina rested her hands on the table so Vivian could see they were steady.
“You were comfortable letting them believe I threatened you.”
“I panicked.”
“And chose me to absorb the consequences.”
Richard reached for a pen.
“Give me the wording of the correction.”
“No,” Amina said. “She can write what happened.”
The correction arrived forty minutes later. Short, direct, stripped of the word misunderstanding.
Amina had Daniel confirm that it reached the original recipients. The reporter’s article described the assault and the separate financing dispute without publishing the footage. Vivian’s attempt to control the story had ended with her signing her own account of it.
For a few minutes, Amina felt better.
Then Priya came in carrying a folder marked with yellow tabs.
“Twelve million in payments we can’t match to actual work,” she said. “That’s the total across the vendors. Ethan’s linked company is part of it, not additional.”
Amina read the summary.
“Who approved them?”
“Grant’s division requested most of the work. Ethan processed the exceptions.”
“And Richard?”
“His office received quarterly summaries. We haven’t established what he read.”
Amina tapped a line at the bottom.
“Why is there a new payment scheduled for tomorrow?”
“Because someone approved it at six forty-three last night.”
Thirteen minutes after the meeting was supposed to begin. While Amina sat in a private office with ice against her face.
“Can it still go out?”
“Not under the temporary controls finance agreed to this morning. But they tried.”
Amina stood.
“Bring the approval record.”
At eleven fifty, she returned to Whitmore Holdings for the emergency board meeting. Richard waited outside the room. Grant was already inside with his lawyer. Ethan sat beside an empty chair, staring at his hands.
Vivian stood near the elevators. Nobody had invited her past reception this time.
“Amina,” Richard said. “Before we go in, can we separate what happened to you from what happens to my family?”
She looked through the glass at Ethan, then at Grant.
“I have,” she said. “Your family keeps joining the two.”
Inside, Helen called the meeting to order.
Amina opened the yellow-tabbed folder.
“Before anyone asks me to release another dollar,” she said, “we’re going to discuss where the last twelve million went.”
