"The Woman They Shouldn’t Have Slapped" Chapter 4
The Names on the Payments
Amina placed the vendor chart on the screen.
“Cole Advisory received two point four million dollars,” she said. “It is owned by Ethan Cole’s brother. The invoices describe market research. We have requested the research four times. None has been produced.”
Ethan lifted his head.
“That company performed services.”
“Then show us the work.”
His lawyer touched his sleeve.
Grant leaned toward the microphone.
“Are we really conducting an interrogation?”
“No,” said Margaret Ellis, the independent director chairing the meeting. “We’re reviewing expenditures. Please let her finish.”
Amina changed the slide. Payment dates. Approval codes. The connections between three vendors and companies associated with Grant’s longtime business partners.
She kept her explanation short. Nobody needed a lecture on accounting to understand money leaving a company for work nobody could produce.
“The twelve million is the total under review,” she said. “We are not presenting every unexplained dollar as a proven theft. We are presenting enough unresolved transactions to make another unrestricted funding release impossible.”
Richard looked at the last entry.
“That payment was approved yesterday?”
“Six forty-three.”
He turned to Ethan.
“You knew the review was being brought forward.”
“It was a routine payment.”
“Then why use an exception?” Margaret asked.
“Because the vendor was overdue.”
Amina slid a printed invoice across the table.
“The invoice date was changed yesterday afternoon. Our copy from Monday says next month.”
Ethan stared at it.
For the first time since the slap, Amina felt the room’s attention shift completely away from her cheek. These people were not examining how she had responded to an insult now. They were examining signatures.
Grant’s lawyer requested a recess.
Margaret granted ten minutes.
In the corridor, Richard caught up with Amina.
“I didn’t know about Cole Advisory.”
“What did you know about the others?”
He glanced toward the restroom door, where Grant had disappeared.
“That my brother liked people who did favors.”
“And what happened when employees objected?”
Richard’s face hardened. “You think I knew everything.”
“No. I think you accepted too many reasons not to ask.”
He looked older under the corridor lights.
“Whitmore was my father’s whole life.”
“It is nine thousand other people’s livelihood.”
Amina went to the water cooler. Her cheek still hurt when she swallowed. She drank slowly.
When they reconvened, Grant’s lawyer announced that his client would cooperate with an appropriately constituted review but objected to “personal hostility contaminating the process.”
Margaret removed her glasses.
“Then you’ll appreciate that independent counsel will oversee it.”
The board voted to suspend Ethan’s payment authority and place Grant on administrative leave while the review proceeded. Both would retain the opportunity to respond to the findings. Records were to be preserved, and employees were to receive instructions directly from the review team.
Grant pushed back his chair.
“You’re handing the company to her.”
Margaret looked at him.
“You approved the recapitalization. Did you believe her money came without an investor?”

His face darkened.
He left with his lawyer. Ethan followed more slowly. At the door, he turned toward Richard.
“Can we talk?”
“Not without counsel,” Richard said.
It was the first useful refusal Amina had heard from him.
The remainder of the meeting concerned practical survival. Payroll had to continue. Suppliers needed accurate information. The review needed resources, and the business needed management unconnected to the questioned payments.
Amina agreed that her team would work on a restricted funding proposal to keep ordinary operations moving. She refused to promise approval before seeing the revised controls.
At four, the meeting ended.
Helen came around the table to gather the signed resolutions. Her hands shook as she aligned the pages.
“You all right?” Amina asked.
“I’ve worked here nineteen years.”
“That wasn’t quite what I asked.”
Helen gave a brief, embarrassed smile.
“I don’t know yet.”
Amina understood.
Outside the elevators, Nora was waiting with Amina’s coat.
“I thought you might need this.”
“Thank you.”
Nora helped her settle the collar, then spoke very quietly.
“Ethan asked IT to replace his laptop this morning. He said it was crashing.”
Amina stopped fastening a button.
“Did they?”
“No. I heard the request and called Helen. I didn’t know whether it mattered.”
“It matters.”
Daniel was already reaching for his phone.
Nora stepped back, suddenly anxious.
“Will he know I said something?”
Amina considered her answer instead of offering an easy promise.
“He may guess. You’ll have a direct contact on the review team, and Helen will document any change to your work or treatment. If anything happens, call us immediately.”
Nora nodded.
After she left, Amina stood in front of the elevator without pressing the button.
“What is it?” Daniel asked.
“Everyone watched yesterday.”
“Yes.”
“Today someone spoke.”
He waited beside her.
Amina pressed the button.
“Let’s make sure she doesn’t regret it.”
