"The Woman They Shouldn’t Have Slapped" Chapter 7
The Family Name
Amina did not touch the folder.
“When?”
“This afternoon.”
“Why bring it to me?”
Richard looked at the chair. She nodded, and he sat.
“Because I read it.”
She called Daniel. Richard waited without objection.
Inside the folder were copies of early vendor proposals, handwritten approval notes, and correspondence from the year before Diop Capital invested. Richard explained that his father had insisted on keeping paper copies of major commitments, a habit the family office had maintained long after everyone complained about it.
Grant had sent a driver to collect the file. Richard had refused to release it before checking the contents.
“He said lawyers would misinterpret old notes.”
“Would they?” Amina asked.
Richard looked at the cover.
“I don’t think there’s much room for interpretation.”
Daniel arrived and began recording what Richard said with his consent. The folder would go to independent counsel for examination. Richard identified the handwriting he recognized and separated what he knew from what he had assumed.
He did not do it gracefully.
Twice he called a payment arrangement “a family accommodation.” Twice Daniel asked him what that meant in actual dollars.
At last Richard put his face in his hands.
“I knew he was pushing things through.”
Amina waited.
“I told myself he was keeping projects moving. We had delays. Banks asking questions. I thought he was cutting corners.”
“And Marisol?”
His hands lowered.
“I saw the summary. It said she had a conflict with management.”
“Did you read her complaint?”
“No.”
“Why?”
He looked at her. This time he did not reach for his father, his brother, or the pressure of running the company.
“Because I preferred the summary.”
The answer left him diminished in a way no accusation could have achieved.
Amina rose and went to the window. She needed a moment before she trusted her voice.
“You can tell counsel that,” she said.
“I will.”
“And if it damages you?”
“It should.”
She turned. He was not asking her to contradict him.
The following morning, Grant came to headquarters despite the instructions governing his leave. Helen called security before he reached the executive floor.
Amina was in a conference room with Margaret when the raised voices carried down the corridor.
“I have worked in this building for twenty-six years.”
The security supervisor answered too quietly to hear.
Richard’s voice followed.
“Grant. Come downstairs.”
“No. You come here.”
Amina moved to the doorway. Margaret remained beside her.
Grant stood beyond the glass barrier, his visitor credential lying on the reception desk. Richard faced him from the other side.
“You gave them the file,” Grant said.
“Yes.”
“Do you understand what you’ve done?”
Richard’s shoulders were rigid.
“I’m beginning to.”
Grant saw Amina.
“There she is. Enjoying this?”
She did not answer the question.
“Your lawyer has the contact details for the review team.”
“You think money makes you one of us?”

The old phrase came out so naturally that Richard closed his eyes.
Amina felt something settle inside her. Not surprise. Not even anger this time. Recognition.
“No,” she said. “I’ve seen enough of you.”
Grant turned back to his brother.
“Dad would be ashamed.”
For a second, Richard looked exactly like a boy afraid of disappointing his father.
Then he picked up the visitor credential and handed it to the security supervisor.
“My brother is leaving.”
Grant waited for someone to soften the sentence.
Nobody did.
Amina watched him walk back to the elevator. It was a short distance. He managed to make every step look like a grievance.
That afternoon, Richard offered his resignation from the executive role.
Margaret accepted it subject to an orderly transition. The independent directors would appoint interim management. Richard would provide records and remain available to the review without retaining authority over staff.
He asked for one thing.
“Please don’t let people say I’m retiring.”
Margaret looked at him for a long moment.
“We’ll state the circumstances accurately.”
After the meeting, Richard paused beside Amina’s chair.
“Vivian asked if I could get her foundation position back.”
“What did you say?”
“That there wasn’t a position to get back. There was a favor I’d kept extending.”
Amina closed her notebook.
“How did she take it?”
“Badly.”
He almost smiled, then thought better of it.
“I should have let her take things badly years ago.”
When he had gone, Margaret sat on the edge of the table.
“You’re awfully quiet.”
“I thought this part would feel better.”
“It may later.”
Amina looked at the empty executive chair.
She had wanted them out of the way. Now they were moving, and behind them lay everything they had neglected: employees, invoices, damaged careers, a company that could not pay its people with apologies.
Her phone buzzed. Priya had finished the cash forecast.
Amina opened it.
The available runway was shorter than they had hoped.
