"Collared by the Enemy Alpha King" Chapter 7 — Touch the Cub and Lose Your Hand
Eric locked down the keep before dawn.
No council member could leave. No vehicle could cross the gates. Communications moved to encrypted channels controlled by Maya Reid, Eric’s human-born security director and one of the few people Silas had never managed to purchase.
Ian watched the operation from Eric’s office while Leo built a fortress from legal files.
“Those are mineral contracts,” Eric said.
Leo placed a wooden wolf on top. “Now they’re a castle.”
“They are worth forty million dollars.”
“Then it’s a rich castle.”
Ian leaned against the desk. “He has your respect for paperwork.”
“He has your respect for authority.”
Their eyes met.
The collar warmed.
Ian looked away first and resented it.
Maya entered without knocking. She was forty-two, calm under gunfire, and immune to most Alpha pressure. She placed a tablet beside Eric.
“Ironfang never received your letters,” she said. “The courier records were altered. Also, Chairman Voss authorized twelve private contractors through a shell company tied to silver hunters.”
“Location?” Eric asked.
“Unknown. But somebody opened the north armory three hours ago.”
Ian straightened. “They’re already inside.”
The lights failed.
Emergency red flooded the office. Steel shutters dropped over the windows. Somewhere below, automatic gunfire erupted.
Eric reached for Leo.
The floor between them exploded.
Lockstone chains shot from concealed channels and wrapped around Eric’s arms, chest, and throat. The same energy struck the Sovereign Collar. Ian crashed to his knees as his wolf vanished beneath a wave of cold.
Maya fired into the doorway. A council guard fell, but three more came behind him wearing scent masks.
“Take the king!” someone shouted. “The prisoner and cub go to the shrine!”
Ian ripped a metal leg from a side table and swung it into the first attacker’s knee. He could not shift. He did not need to.
Eric fought the chains, muscles shaking. “Get Leo out.”
Ian grabbed the child and pushed him behind the desk.
“Stay down.”
Leo clutched his bottle. “I can help.”
“Your job is to breathe and complain later.”
“I’m good at complaining.”
“I noticed.”
Two hunters breached the wall. Ian caught a silver spear under his arm, turned with the thrust, and drove its shaft into the second man’s face. The first released the weapon and reached for Leo.
Ian broke his hand.
“Touch the cub,” he said, “and lose the arm.”
He drove the man through the glass desk.
Maya reached Eric and cut one chain before a lockstone dart hit her shoulder. She fell without a sound.
Eric roared. The remaining chains tightened.
“Ian!”
The collar transmitted not fear for himself, but terror for Leo.
Ian threw the spear. It severed the chain at Eric’s left wrist.
Then the office doors sealed between them.
Ian and Leo were trapped on one side with six hunters. Eric remained on the other, his roar shaking dust from the ceiling.

Ian positioned himself in front of the child.
“Daddy,” Leo whispered.
The name no longer felt impossible.
It felt like an oath.
“Close your eyes.”
Leo frowned. “Why?”
“Because I’m about to teach your father’s guards why Ironfang used to win wars.”
The hunters attacked together.
Ian met them without claws.
He blocked a baton with his forearm, took the pain, and used the attacker’s momentum to drive him into another. He ducked beneath a blade, swept a knee, and snapped the weapon against the floor. Silver cut his shoulder. The collar carried the wound to Eric, whose answering roar came through the steel door.
Ian kept moving.
One man reached Leo.
The child’s eyes turned red.
“No.”
Royal pressure detonated through the office.
Every adult except Ian dropped to both knees. Cabinets burst open. The ceiling lights shattered. Leo stood behind the desk, ears raised and bottle still in hand.
Ian stared.
Leo stared back. “Was that helping?”
“Remind me never to ground you.”
The pressure lasted only seconds. Leo swayed.
Ian caught him, but a hunter recovered and drove a silver knife beneath Ian’s ribs.
Pain blinded him.
He struck the man down and pulled the blade free, knowing silver inside the body would kill faster than blood loss.
The steel door finally tore open.
Eric stood in the gap, one arm bloody, black-silver chains hanging from his shoulders.
“They took the lower tunnels,” he said. “More are coming. Maya has an evacuation route.”
Ian pressed a hand over the wound. “Take Leo.”
“We leave together.”
“The collar will slow you if I collapse.”
“Then don’t.”
Boots thundered in the corridor.
Eric lifted Leo with one arm and caught Ian around the waist with the other.
Ian resisted for half a second.
Then Leo wrapped his arms around both their necks.
“Family hug,” he announced.
Gunfire struck the wall behind them.
Eric carried them toward the emergency stairs.
The collar burned with a new warning.
Not from Eric.
From the keep itself.
Far below, ancient locks opened beneath the Moon Shrine.
Silas’s voice filled the emergency speakers.
“Bring me the Moonborn heir,” he ordered. “Kill both fathers.”
Maya reached them through a maintenance hatch and handed Ian an Ironfang field knife. Its leather grip was worn, the blade marked with his family crest.
“Where did you get this?”
“Your sister sent it with the last courier,” Maya said. “Silas logged it as evidence and ordered it destroyed.”
Ian closed his hand around the weapon. Proof that Ironfang had not abandoned him steadied something raw inside his chest.
“There was a message,” Maya added. “Three words: We are waiting.”
Eric heard. The bond filled with relief and guilt.
Ian looked at him. “You believed the forged replies.”
“I believed what supported my fear.”
“Which was?”
“That if I freed you, you would leave and take Leo beyond my reach.”
Ian wanted to punish the honesty. Instead, he slid the knife into his belt.
“You cannot protect someone by making every choice for him.”
“I am learning.”
“Slowly.”
Leo reached up. Eric took one of his hands, Ian the other. For several steps they ran together through the red-lit passage, an absurd family formation in the middle of a coup.
Then gunfire split the corridor and forced them apart again.
Ian moved toward the shots, but Eric caught the back of his shirt.
“We protect Leo first.”
“I know how to protect a child.”
“You have known him for one hour.”
Ian turned, furious. “And I have spent every minute since learning what frightened him. Can you say the same about the council you allowed near him?”
Eric released him as if struck.
Leo looked between them. “No fighting until the bad guys leave.”
“Agreed,” Ian said.
Eric exhaled. “Agreed.”
They sealed the promise by crossing wrists, an Ironfang battlefield gesture Eric remembered from their first war. Ian noticed that too.
The king had studied his enemy long before fate gave him a reason.
The realization followed Ian into the stairwell. Eric knew Ironfang hand signals, battlefield triage, and the lullaby hidden in Leo’s music box. Obsession had begun long before the mate mark appeared.
“How long?” Ian asked.
Eric understood. “Since the Moonwell.”
“Four years.”
“Every day.”
Ian faced forward before Eric could see what the answer did to him.
