"Collared by the Enemy Alpha King" Chapter 9 — The Only Man the Monster Obeyed
Eric’s feral state began with silence.
The black wolf stood over Ian in the snow, blood steaming on his muzzle. His red eyes no longer recognized Maya, the surviving guards, or the child clutching Ian’s torn sleeve.
“Dad?” Leo whispered.
The wolf’s head turned.
Ian felt the instant Eric’s human mind vanished.
The Sovereign Collar became a tunnel filled with hunger, pain, and one command repeated until it lost all meaning.
Protect.
Protect.
Protect.
Eric lunged at the nearest guard.
Ian caught a fistful of black fur. The movement tore the silver wound in his side, but he held on.
“Eric.”
The wolf threw him away.
Ian hit the snow and rolled. Maya fired a warning shot into the air. Eric changed direction toward her.
“Don’t shoot him!” Ian shouted.
“I wasn’t planning to miss twice.”
Leo ran forward.
Ian grabbed the back of his hoodie. “Absolutely not.”
“He listens to me.”
“Not like this.”
“He listens to you more.”
Eric struck a vehicle hard enough to roll it onto its side. Guards scattered. The hunters who had surrendered fled into the trees.
Maya raised her rifle again. “Ian, if he reaches the highway—”
“Give me one minute.”
“You can barely stand.”
“Then make it a short minute.”
Ian handed Leo to her.
The child caught his collar. “Daddy, hug him.”
Ian looked at the enormous wolf tearing through steel.
“That is your plan?”
“He’s always less scary when you touch him.”
“We need to discuss your definition of scary.”
Leo’s eyes filled, though he refused to cry. “Please.”
Ian removed the silver knife from his belt and walked toward Eric.
The wolf turned.
Blood covered his teeth. Black fur rose along his spine. Every instinct Ian possessed ordered him not to approach an apex predator who had forgotten his name.
Ian kept walking.
“You destroyed my army,” he said. “Stole two years of my life. Hid our son in a wall.”
Eric stalked closer.
“You bit me in front of your entire court.”
The wolf snarled.
“And now you’re making me limp across a frozen river to stop you from eating your own security team.”
Ian stopped within striking distance.
“You are the most exhausting man I have ever met.”
Eric charged.
Ian threw away the knife.
He opened both arms.
The impact drove him onto his back. Snow burst around them. Eric’s claws landed on either side of his shoulders, and his teeth closed over Ian’s throat.
Maya shouted behind them.
Ian did not move.
The wolf’s jaws tightened against the Sovereign Collar.
“Mad dog,” Ian whispered. “I’m right here.”
Eric growled against his neck.
Ian reached up and buried both hands in the thick fur behind his ears. He drew the massive head closer instead of pushing it away.
“You want my scent? Take it.”
He turned his face aside and exposed the temporary bite.
“But you come back to me.”

Ian released his Alpha scent without restraint.
Wild cedar flooded the ruined gorge. It entered the mate bond, carrying memory with it: moonlight on broken stone, four years of rivalry, two years of fury, Leo’s warm heartbeat, and the moment Eric had chosen to return for Ian instead of chasing Silas.
The wolf shuddered.
His teeth broke skin but did not claim.
Ian felt Eric fighting through the darkness.
“That’s it,” he said. “You know me.”
The growl became a broken sound.
The wolf’s body collapsed over him.
Black fur withdrew. Eric returned to human form, naked except for blood, snow, and the remnants of torn clothing at one wrist. Ian dragged Eric’s discarded coat over him before Maya could turn Leo around.
Eric’s arms locked around Ian.
He buried his face against Ian’s chest and released a low, involuntary whine.
The feared king of Nightfall clung to his enemy as if drowning.
Ian looked at Maya. “If you mention that sound, I’ll deny it.”
“I heard nothing,” she said.
Leo wriggled free and ran to them. “I heard it.”
Eric opened one red-rimmed eye. “You hear too much.”
Leo crawled under the coat between them. “Family pile.”
Ian tried to sit up. Pain forced him back.
Eric was fully alert at once. His hands moved over Ian’s wounds, cataloging each one.
“The silver is spreading.”
“I noticed.”
“The shrine has an antidote.”
“Silas has the shrine.”
Eric’s face became cold again, but now Ian recognized the emotion beneath it.
Fear, sharpened into violence.
“Then I will take it from him.”
Ian caught his wrist. “We take it.”
“You cannot walk.”
“You cannot remain sane without me.”
Leo nodded seriously. “Daddy wins.”
Maya’s radio crackled. A surviving officer reported movement beneath the shrine. Silas had summoned the remaining council and begun the succession rite.
If completed, it would transfer Eric’s royal authority into Leo—by killing both bonded fathers.
Eric lifted Ian as if he weighed nothing.
“I can walk,” Ian protested.
“Later.”
“Put me down.”
“No.”
The collar warmed with something almost peaceful.
Ian rested one arm around Eric’s shoulders, purely to prevent being dropped.
Leo walked beside them, holding the edge of the coat.
“When we get home,” he said, “I want a room with two doors.”
“Why?” Ian asked.
“So neither of you can lock me in.”
Eric’s steps faltered.
Ian felt the guilt strike through the bond.
“Two doors,” Eric promised.
Leo considered. “And a slide.”
“Do not abuse the moment.”
“Daddy said you’re rich.”
“I said his castle was expensive.”
“Same thing.”
The Moon Shrine rose beyond the trees, blue fire pouring through its windows.
At the top of the steps, Silas waited with the council.
In his hands rested a crown made from fused silver claws.
Maya stopped at the tree line to distribute the remaining weapons. Ian accepted a pistol, checked the chamber, and handed it back.

“Silver rounds,” he said. “If the bond redirects the damage, one shot could poison both of us.”
She replaced it with a steel blade. “You look terrible.”
“You always know what to say before a battle.”
Leo tugged Maya’s sleeve and pointed toward a narrow drainage opening beneath the shrine. He had used it during Silas’s secret lessons.
“It goes under the blue room,” he explained. “There are bones, but they don’t bite.”
Eric crouched to his height. “You stay with Maya.”
“No.”
“Leo.”
“You said families don’t hide truth anymore.”
Eric closed his eyes briefly. Ian understood the conflict. Keeping Leo near danger felt unforgivable. Locking him away after promising freedom felt equally wrong.
Ian knelt beside them despite the pain. “You can guide us to the lower entrance. Then you stay behind the ward with Maya. That is not punishment. It is your part of the plan.”
Leo considered him. “Can I give orders?”
“One.”
The child pointed at both fathers. “Don’t die.”
Eric placed his fist over his heart. Ian did the same.
“Order accepted,” they said.
They crossed the frozen garden toward the shrine. Eric supported Ian without carrying him, respecting the difference. Their shoulders touched with every step.
“When this ends,” Eric said quietly, “I will open the collar.”
“And if opening it destroys the bond?”
Pain moved through Eric’s scent, but his answer remained steady. “Then you will still be free.”
Ian studied the shrine ahead. For two years, he had imagined freedom as distance from Eric. Now the possibility of feeling nothing through the bond left a hollow place beneath his ribs.
He did not confess it.
Instead, he offered Eric the handle of his knife.
“Hold this until we get inside.”
Eric understood the Ironfang gesture. A warrior surrendered his weapon only to someone trusted to return it.
He took the knife with reverence.
Together, they climbed the final steps.
