"Collared by the Enemy Alpha King" Chapter 10 — My Scent, My Blood, My King
Silas had chained the council to the shrine floor.
Some had supported him. Others had learned too late that loyalty meant nothing to a man who intended to rule through a child.
The Moonwell burned at the center of the chamber. Ancient symbols circled the water, each filled with Eric’s stolen blood.
Silas raised the silver crown.
“One more step and the succession begins.”
Eric set Ian down beside a pillar. Maya took Leo behind cover.
“You cannot transfer authority without the king’s consent,” Eric said.
“The Sovereign Collar is consent.”
Silas turned the broken controller in his hand. “Your ancestors designed it to bind conquered mates. The bond recognizes possession, not affection.”
Ian forced himself upright. “Then your ancestors were idiots.”
Silas smiled. “Still performing strength while silver eats your heart.”
“Still performing intelligence while everyone hates you.”
Eric moved in front of Ian. “Release the council and surrender.”
“For him?” Silas asked. “You would dismantle a thousand years of law for an Ironfang prisoner?”
“He is not a prisoner.”
“The collar says otherwise.”
Silas drove the crown into the Moonwell.
Pain tore through Ian’s throat. The collar projected chains of light around him and Eric. Leo screamed as a third line reached for his chest.
Eric shifted his body between the magic and the child.
“Now!” Maya shouted.
Her team fired at the shrine supports. The council members pulled against their restraints. Ian seized the light-chain around his wrist and dragged it toward himself, drawing power away from Leo.
Silas increased the rite.
The Moonwell showed its memories across the walls.
Ian saw the first battle four years ago. He saw his blood strike the carving. Eric’s followed. The life core formed beneath the water.
Then the memory changed.
Silas entered after both armies withdrew. He found the glowing core and smiled.
He had known from the beginning.
He had engineered the second war, forged Ironfang orders, intercepted Eric’s letters, and moved Ian into the poisoned cell. He needed hatred to keep the two fathers apart until Leo was old enough to survive the succession rite.
The entire council watched the evidence on the walls.
“You created nothing,” Ian said. “You only stole it.”
Silas’s confidence cracked.
Eric tore one light-chain loose. Ian matched him. Their marks ignited, and the collar began to fracture.
Silas drew a silver pistol and aimed at Ian.
Eric crossed the distance before he fired.
The shot struck Eric beneath the shoulder.
Ian felt it through the bond and remained standing.
Eric closed one hand around Silas’s throat.
“Touch my family,” he said, “and die.”
“Eric.” Ian’s voice stopped him.
The king’s claws rested over Silas’s pulse.
“If you kill him now, he becomes a martyr to every coward who agreed with him.”
“He tried to kill you.”
“Then let him live long enough to watch us replace every law he worships.”
Eric’s eyes remained red.

Ian crossed the chamber and placed a hand on his wrist.
After a long second, Eric released Silas.
Maya locked black-silver restraints around the older man.
The Moonwell dimmed. The chains vanished. The collar remained around Ian’s throat, cracked but intact.
A council healer removed the silver from Ian’s wound and forced an antidote between his lips. Strength returned slowly.
Eric stood apart while the prisoners were removed.
Ian found him at the edge of the well.
“What now?” Ian asked.
Eric opened his hand.
A black key lay across his palm.
The rescued council convened before dawn. Several members demanded Eric execute Silas immediately. Ian opposed them, not from mercy, but because the old system had hidden behind private punishments for centuries.
“Put him on trial,” Ian said. “Open the records. Let every pack see who financed the hunters and forged the war orders.”
Eric sat at the head of the damaged table, one shoulder bandaged. “And the captive-mate statutes?”
“Burn them.”
An elder objected. “Those laws preserve royal bloodlines.”
Leo, sitting in Eric’s chair while eating crackers, looked at him. “I’m the royal bloodline.”
The elder fell silent.
Ian leaned over the table. “No Alpha, Omega, Beta, or human-born wolf will be collared as property again. A bond without consent has no legal standing.”
“You speak as if you already rule here,” another elder said.
Ian smiled without warmth. “I speak as the man your king was prepared to destroy this court to protect.”
Eric’s scent carried unmistakable approval.
The vote passed after Maya placed Silas’s financial records on the screen. Twelve council members had accepted hunter money. Four had opposed the scheme and been threatened through their families.
By sunrise, Nightfall no longer possessed a functioning old council.
It possessed evidence, enemies, and the beginning of something better.
Afterward, Eric found Ian alone beside the Moonwell. “You changed my government in forty minutes.”
“It was poorly built.”
“Will you stay and help rebuild it?”
Ian touched the collar. “Ask me when I can answer without this around my throat.”
Eric’s face tightened, but he nodded.
“Then the collar comes off before I ask again.”
Before using it, Eric led Ian to the forge beneath the well. The walls showed previous collars transformed into chains, crowns, and execution blades. Not one record mentioned a prisoner being freed.
“My bloodline called this sacred,” Eric said.
“Your bloodline had poor taste.”
They found the first law carved behind the furnace: A CLAIM WITHOUT CHOICE BINDS ONLY THE JAILER.
Silas had deliberately concealed the second line: A BOND FREELY RETURNED MAKES EQUAL WHAT POWER DIVIDED.
Ian traced the words. “The collar was never designed to create obedience.”
“It exposed the ruler’s intent,” Eric said. “When used as a weapon, it carried the captive’s pain back to the king.”
“A punishment.”
“A warning.”
Eric placed the collar in the furnace. Blue flame rose but did not consume it.

“It will not change until both bonded wolves choose its next form,” he said.
Ian was not ready to make that choice while freedom still existed only as a promise. He removed his hand from the forge.
“Open it first.”
Eric nodded without argument.
That obedience—not to Ian’s power but to his boundary—did more to weaken Ian’s defenses than any command could have.
“The forge answered when we broke the rite.”
Ian looked at the key, then at him.
“You can remove it?”
“Yes.”
“Do it.”
Eric inserted the key into a seam that had not existed before. The collar opened and fell into his hands.
Ian touched his bare throat.
The bond remained, but its pressure disappeared. For the first time since the throne hall, he could walk away without pain pulling him back.
Eric placed the collar on the stone.
“The northern gates are open,” he said. “A vehicle is waiting. Ironfang has been told the truth.”
Ian searched his face. “You’re releasing me.”
“I am giving back what should never have been mine to take.”
“And Leo?”
Eric’s control slipped. “He is your son. If you choose to take him to Ironfang, I will not stop you.”
Every word cost him.
Ian could smell it.
“You would let us both leave?”
“No.” Eric’s voice broke rough. “I would survive it.”
He stepped back from Ian.
“Choose me—or walk away free.”
Ian had imagined freedom every night for two years.
He had imagined the northern gates open, the mountains beyond them, and no Voss wolf close enough to command him.
Now freedom stood within reach.
Leo entered the shrine carrying his bottle and Eric’s torn bow tie, which he had apparently found in the wreckage.
He looked at the open collar.
“Are we going home?”
Ian crouched. “Which home?”
Leo considered the question with painful seriousness.
Then he took one of Ian’s hands and one of Eric’s.
“The one with two doors.”
Ian did not answer immediately.
He carried Leo outside while Eric remained beside the cold forge. The northern gates stood open in the distance. Beyond them waited Ironfang territory and every piece of the life Ian had believed lost.
Mara’s vehicle arrived at sunrise.
Ian’s sister stepped out with six warriors. She hugged him hard enough to reopen a bandage, then struck his shoulder for surrendering without telling her the plan.
She saw Leo and went silent.
“This is complicated,” Ian said.
Leo offered her the empty bottle. “I’m your nephew.”
Mara crouched slowly. “I can see that.”
Eric watched from the gate but did not approach. He had removed every guard, leaving the road unobstructed.
Mara followed Ian’s gaze. “Do you want me to kill him?”
Ian considered the question.
“Not today.”
“Progress.”
He placed Leo in Eric’s arms before entering Mara’s vehicle. The child protested until Ian promised he was not disappearing, only choosing without a chain around his throat.
Eric said nothing.
The bond stretched as the gates receded, but it did not hurt.
Freedom felt clean, cold, and unexpectedly lonely.
