"All Five of My Roommates Want Me" Chapter 10 — The Sixth Key

Suspicion entered the house like smoke.

Nobody accused anyone directly. That made it worse.

Ethan wanted every device surrendered for forensic review. Lucas interpreted the demand as an accusation. Noah asked why Lucas had deleted part of the hotel footage. Caleb reminded them that Adrian’s statement was designed to divide them. Mason tried to keep voices low until Ethan mentioned the second room.

“Only Lucas knew where it was,” Ethan said.

Lucas stood. “Only you left Jamie alone in it.”

The blow landed.

Ethan crossed the room.

Noah stepped between them, which Caleb mistook as taking Lucas’s side. Mason grabbed Noah’s arm. Noah pulled free. A chair overturned.

Jamie watched five men who claimed to love him turn fear into territory.

“Stop.”

Nobody heard him.

Ethan shoved Noah aside. Lucas’s hand closed around Ethan’s wrist. Caleb ordered them apart. Mason raised his voice for the first time in years.

Jamie picked up a glass and threw it into the fireplace.

The crash silenced the room.

“Sit down,” Jamie said.

Noah opened his mouth.

“All of you. Sit.”

They did.

The sight would have been satisfying if Jamie had not been furious.

“You are treating me like a country you can defend by invading each other.” He looked at Ethan. “You do not get everyone’s devices because you’re afraid.”

He turned to Lucas. “You do not get to hide evidence because you think only you understand the danger.”

To Noah: “Strength does not make you the referee.”

To Caleb: “Logic is not neutrality when you use it to avoid admitting you’re jealous.”

To Mason: “Keeping the peace is not the same as telling the truth.”

Five men absorbed the words.

“I will not build a relationship where loving me becomes an excuse to hurt one another,” Jamie said. “If that is what this is, it ends now.”

Mason spoke first. “I’m jealous all the time.”

Noah stared at him.

Mason’s hands shook. “I feed everyone because then I know I’m necessary. When Jamie wants one of you instead, I feel replaceable.”

Caleb removed his glasses. “I turn rules into distance because wanting all of this feels medically, socially, and emotionally reckless.”

Noah looked at Jamie. “I make jokes because if you reject me seriously, I don’t know how to recover.”

Lucas loosened his clenched hand. “I deleted the footage showing the second room because it revealed the access method I used. It was illegal. I thought protecting the evidence meant protecting everyone.”

Ethan sat rigidly. “I want to be chosen first.”

Jamie waited.

“And I am ashamed of how much I want it,” Ethan finished.

Honesty lowered the temperature.

Lucas opened the hotel system logs in full. The master key had been cloned at 2:51 a.m. from a management terminal. The user account belonged to the overnight hotel manager, who had recently received a payment from an Adrian-controlled company.

“None of us gave him the key,” Lucas said.

Ethan looked at him. “I’m sorry.”

“So am I.”

The federal agents confirmed the hotel manager’s arrest two hours later.

Adrian’s final attempt to divide them had failed, but barely.

Jamie called another meeting the next morning.

He placed five new brass keys on the dining table.

“The landlord approved the renovation,” he said. “The unused third floor becomes two more bedrooms and a shared studio. Everyone keeps private space.”

Noah picked up a key. “Are you asking us to stay?”

“I’m asking whether you want to build this with me.”

“This?” Caleb repeated.

“A relationship. Six adults. No hierarchy unless we all agree to one for a specific decision. No one gets to love me halfway, and I don’t get to ignore the relationships among the rest of you.”

Ethan examined the keys. “You understand this will be difficult.”

“You’re difficult.”

“Accurate.”

Jamie took a breath. “I love different things about each of you. I’m not promising equal feelings every day. I’m promising equal honesty.”

Mason took the first key.

Caleb took the second.

Noah grabbed his and kissed Jamie’s cheek before remembering to ask. He froze.

Jamie laughed and kissed him properly.

Lucas took the fourth key, then handed it back. “Give it to me again after you answer one question.”

“What?”

“Do you want me here when the mystery is over?”

Jamie placed the key directly in Lucas’s palm. “Especially then.”

Ethan remained last.

“I cannot promise I’ll never want more,” he said.

“Promise you’ll tell me instead of trying to take it.”

Ethan accepted the fifth key.

That evening, the six men stood in the empty third-floor space while winter light filled the windows.

Jamie imagined walls covered in photographs, separate doors, shared mornings, arguments, reconciliation, and desire without secrecy.

Ethan came beside him.

“May I?” he asked.

Jamie leaned into his arm. “Yes.”

Behind them, Noah and Mason argued about paint. Caleb measured door widths. Lucas quietly programmed six fingerprints into the new lock.

For the first time, the future looked more complicated than the mystery.

Jamie wanted it anyway.

The complicated future began with a harder conversation than any of them expected.

Ethan admitted he feared becoming controlling when frightened. Noah confessed that jokes were his method of escaping rejection. Mason worried care was the only reason anyone kept him. Caleb acknowledged that clinical calm could become distance. Lucas revealed he had installed an extra camera after the break-in without asking.

Jamie made him remove it.

Lucas did so immediately.

Then Jamie offered his own truths. He sometimes enjoyed being the center of their attention and hated himself for enjoying it. He feared choosing one would destroy the household, and choosing five would make outsiders call him greedy or confused. He still flinched when someone approached from behind.

“None of those reactions disqualifies you from love,” Caleb said.

“That sounded clinical.”

Caleb took Jamie’s hand after a nod. “Then let me try again. You’re allowed to want us.”

Noah’s expression turned unexpectedly serious. “And you’re allowed to change your mind about any of us.”

They scheduled their first five dates: a bookstore with Ethan, a night market with Noah, a cooking class with Mason, an aquarium with Caleb, and a sunrise photography walk with Lucas.

“That is absolutely a schedule,” Noah protested.

“Outside the bedroom,” Jamie reminded him.

The following morning, news alerts announced Adrian’s arrest on charges connected to unlawful surveillance, drugging, burglary, and evidence tampering. More victims contacted Detective Shah within hours.

Jamie turned off the television before reporters could make him into a headline.

He did not need strangers to decide whether he had survived correctly.

He had a statement to give, a home to rebuild, and five first dates to anticipate.

For the first time since Room 1708, curiosity outweighed fear.

The dates revealed versions of them the crowded house had concealed. Ethan loved used bookstores and became embarrassingly competitive over literary trivia. Noah negotiated food stalls like international treaties. Mason burned caramel in the cooking class and laughed until he cried. Caleb knew the name of every shark at the aquarium. Lucas photographed empty streets but, when asked, allowed Jamie into the frame.

After each date, they held a check-in. Jamie named what felt good, what felt pressured, and what he wanted next. The men did the same, including truths that bruised without breaking them.

Noah admitted he wanted more time. Ethan admitted he disliked sharing milestones. Mason asked not to be treated as the safe choice. Caleb needed nights completely alone. Lucas wanted affection that was not always initiated by Jamie.

Their agreement changed accordingly.

One evening, Jamie kissed Lucas at the front door because Lucas had asked directly. Another night, he declined Noah’s invitation and found Noah making breakfast the next morning without resentment.

That ordinary acceptance of no became one of Jamie’s deepest reasons for saying yes.
