"My Daughter Called the Mafia Boss “Daddy.”" Chapter 1
The Word That Stopped the Room
“Daddy.”
Six armed men went still around Lorenzo Moretti’s library table.
Elena stopped in the doorway with a cleaning cloth crushed in her fist. Across the marble floor, her three-year-old daughter stood beside the most dangerous man in Genoa and lifted both arms.
“Daddy, can you pick me up?”
Lorenzo’s hand stopped above a shipping manifest.
Nobody interrupted these meetings. Elena had learned that rule before she learned where the spare linen was kept. She had been working at the estate for nineteen days, and until this evening, she had managed to avoid seeing its owner at all.
Now Mia was touching his knee.
A guard stepped away from the wall. His fingers brushed the opening of his jacket, then dropped when he saw how small she was.
Lorenzo raised one hand.
The guard stopped.
“Mia, come here,” Elena said.
Her voice sounded thin in the enormous room.
Mia looked back, delighted rather than frightened. “Mommy, I found him.”
For more than four years, Elena had imagined encountering Lorenzo again. In every version, she had been alone. She had prepared explanations, apologies, even lies. None of them survived the sight of her daughter’s fingers curling into his trouser leg.
Lorenzo looked down at the child.
His face had changed less than she had hoped. Dark hair, severe mouth, the faint scar cutting through his left eyebrow. He wore a charcoal suit without a tie, and the white cuff at his wrist was immaculate.
Once, Elena had worn one of those shirts to make breakfast in his apartment.
She tightened her grip on the cloth.
Lorenzo’s gaze moved over Mia’s brown curls, her round cheeks, the blue-gray eyes Elena had spent three years refusing to explain.
Something crossed his face.
It was gone before she could name it.
“You have blue eyes,” Mia told him.
“So do you,” he said.
“Mine are prettier.”
One of the men coughed into his hand.
Lorenzo looked toward him. The man immediately lowered his eyes to his papers.
Mia tugged his sleeve. “Mommy says staring is rude.”
Elena crossed the room before another word could escape her daughter’s mouth.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Moretti. Her sitter had to leave, and Rosa said she could stay in the linen room while I finished. I thought the connecting door was locked.”
She knelt, reaching for Mia.
Lorenzo turned toward her voice.
The recognition was immediate.
“Elena.”
Her name sounded entirely different when he said it.
Mia looked between them. “You know Mommy.”
Nobody answered her.
Elena had entered the estate through a cleaning contractor, registered under her mother’s surname, Valez. The job paid enough to clear her overdue rent and included a little apartment in the staff wing. She had been told Lorenzo was abroad and the contract would end before his return.
Then he had come home early.
She should have left that afternoon. Instead, she had told herself that the house was enormous, that she worked in the guest wing, that one more shift would pay for groceries.

She had also wanted to hear his voice.
That was the part she had refused to admit.
“I can explain,” she said.
His eyes moved to the cloth in her hand, then to the faded seam of her uniform.
“You work here.”
“I’m employed by the contractor.”
“How long have you been in my house?”
“I started almost three weeks ago.”
The room seemed to contract around them.
Elena slid an arm around Mia’s waist. “We’ll leave now.”
Mia resisted, gripping Lorenzo’s sleeve with both hands.
“I want Daddy.”
“Sweetheart, you cannot call him that.”
Mia’s mouth trembled. “But he is my daddy.”
The words landed harder the second time.
Lorenzo rose.
Elena flinched before she could stop herself, and his expression closed.
“Gentlemen, the meeting is over.”
Folders shut. Chairs moved. Nobody asked about the unfinished manifests or the two men who had arrived from Milan that morning.
The guard nearest Elena hesitated.
“Wait outside, Davide,” Lorenzo said.
The doors closed behind the last man.
For a moment, the only sound was the clock on the mantel.
Elena loosened Mia’s fingers one at a time.
“I’m sorry about the interruption,” she said. “I’ll speak to the agency tomorrow.”
Lorenzo ignored that.
He knelt.
Elena stopped breathing.
He had once told a man to apologize to her without raising his voice. The man had gone pale. She remembered Lorenzo’s hand at the small of her back afterward, remembered asking him what he had said so quietly.
He had kissed her temple instead of answering.
Now that same man lowered himself to her daughter’s height.
“What is your name?” he asked.
“Mia,” she said. “I’m three.”
She held up four fingers.
Elena folded one down automatically.
Lorenzo watched the gesture.
“Mia,” he repeated.
She reached for his hand. He let her take it.
His fingers looked enormous inside her small fist. Elena had imagined that sight before Mia was born, on a night when she had still believed she could tell him about the pregnancy over dinner.
She had bought tiny white socks that afternoon.
By morning, she had been on a train out of the city.
Mia touched the scar in his eyebrow. “Did you hurt yourself?”
“A long time ago.”
“Mommy has plasters with rabbits.”
“I’ll remember that.”
She nodded, satisfied, and leaned against his bent knee as if she had been doing it all her life.
Lorenzo’s free hand hovered behind her back.
He did not quite touch her.
Elena saw the uncertainty, and it hurt in a place she had thought numb.
“Mia, come to me,” she said gently.
This time, Mia allowed herself to be lifted. She immediately twisted toward Lorenzo and held out one hand.
He stood slowly.
“How did she know me?”
Elena swallowed. “I don’t know.”
His eyes sharpened.
“She saw your photograph in a newspaper,” she said. “She called you that then, too. I thought she had heard someone say something.”
“Who would have said it?”
“I don’t know, Lorenzo.”
His name escaped before she could turn it into something formal.
He looked at her mouth.
Outside, a car rolled across the gravel. The ordinary sound felt impossible.
He reached toward Mia, then stopped when Elena tightened her hold.
“I’m not going to hurt her,” he said.
“I know.”
“Then look at me.”
She did.
Up close, she could see that he was not untouched by the years. There were shadows beneath his eyes and a tiredness she did not remember. His gaze returned to Mia’s face, lingering on the eyes that matched his own.
He already suspected.
Of course he did.
For three years, Elena had been able to postpone this moment by changing cities, changing numbers, refusing to look too long at her daughter in the morning light.
Now there was nowhere left to put the truth.
Lorenzo’s voice lowered.
“When is her birthday?”
