"The Unwanted Son" Chapter 1 — The Boy Eating Alone
Alexander Bennett knew something was wrong before he reached the dining room.
His son's sneakers were missing from the front hall.
Noah always left them beside the umbrella stand, toes pointed toward the door, as if he might run outside the second his father came home. Tonight, the space was empty.
Alexander set down his briefcase. He had taken an earlier train from Manhattan, canceled a client dinner, and driven home through cold October rain. Nobody expected him until Friday.
From the dining room came laughter and the clink of silverware.
Victoria sat beneath the chandelier in a cream silk blouse, cutting a thick steak into neat pieces. Her nine-year-old son, Oliver, had a plate piled with mashed potatoes and buttered carrots. Roast chicken, rolls, strawberries, and chocolate cake crowded the table.
“Alex!” Victoria rose so quickly her chair scraped the floor. “You didn't tell me you were coming.”
“Where's Noah?”
Her smile held. “Upstairs.”
“Why isn't he having dinner?”
“He already has his food.” She touched his arm. “Sit down. I'll have Margaret warm you a plate.”
Alexander looked at the third place setting. There wasn't one.
“Did he eat earlier?”
“Alexander, please. It's been a long day.”
Oliver kept his eyes on his potatoes.
Alexander took the stairs two at a time. At the far end of the second-floor hallway, light leaked beneath Noah's door.
He knocked softly.
“Come in.”
His seven-year-old son sat at a small desk facing the wall. A plate of cold pasta rested beside a glass of water. Noah held his fork halfway to his mouth, frozen at the sight of his father.
“Dad?”
“Hey, buddy.” Alexander crossed the room. “Why are you eating up here?”
Noah glanced toward the hallway. “I'm allowed to.”
“That wasn't what I asked.”
The boy put down his fork. “Mom Victoria said I'm not allowed to eat with them.”
Alexander stared at the plate. The pasta had no sauce. A hard edge had formed where it touched the porcelain.
“Since when?”
Noah shrugged. “It's okay. I don't make a mess up here.”
“Who told you that you make a mess?”
Noah rubbed his thumb against a loose thread on his sleeve.
Alexander crouched beside him. “Look at me. You're not in trouble.”
“Promise?”
The question struck harder than an accusation.
“I promise.”
Noah looked up. “She says Oliver needs a quiet dinner. And I ask too many questions.”
Alexander remembered the family photographs Victoria sent while he traveled. Oliver grinning over pancakes. Victoria decorating a Christmas tree. Noah was always absent, or standing at the edge of the frame.
He had told himself children were difficult to photograph.
“Have you been eating here every night?”
“Mostly.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
Noah's eyes filled. “You said to listen to her when you're gone.”
Alexander closed his eyes for one second. He had said exactly that, during a rushed phone call from Chicago.

“I'm sorry,” he whispered.
He lifted the plate and set it aside. “Come downstairs with me.”
Noah grabbed his wrist. “Please don't be mad at her.”
“I'm not mad at you.”
“That isn't what I said.”
Alexander had no answer that wouldn't frighten him further. He held out his hand instead.
Downstairs, Victoria had resumed her seat. Oliver was reaching for another roll when Alexander entered with Noah beside him.
“Why,” Alexander asked, “is my son eating cold pasta alone in his bedroom?”
Victoria lowered her fork. “We've discussed his behavior.”
“No. You told me he was adjusting.”
“He is. And this is part of that adjustment.”
“You've got a table full of food.” He pointed at the empty stretch of linen. “You couldn't put a chair here?”
“He can eat in his room! What's the big deal?”
Oliver flinched.
Alexander pulled out a chair for Noah. “Sit here, son.”
Victoria stood. “Don't undermine me in front of the children.”
“Then don't give me a reason.”
“You're gone all week. You don't know what it's like managing this house.”
“I know what a seven-year-old looks like when he's afraid to eat with his family.”
Victoria's expression hardened. “He lies. He sneaks food. He throws tantrums whenever Oliver gets something.”
Noah's fingers tightened around the chair back.
Alexander faced his wife. “Why the hell are you treating my son like this?”
“Lower your voice.”
“Answer me.”
“He needs discipline.”
“Pull something like this again, and you're out of this house!”
For a moment only the grandfather clock made a sound.
Then Noah spoke from behind the chair.
“Dad?”
Alexander turned. “Yes?”
The boy's voice shook. “She's done worse things than that.”
Victoria moved so fast her napkin fell to the floor.
“Noah. Upstairs. Now.”
“No,” Alexander said.
Victoria stared at him. “You have no idea what you're encouraging.”
Alexander knelt in front of his son. “Whatever it is, you can tell me.”
Noah looked toward the kitchen, where Margaret stood holding a serving tray. The housekeeper's face had gone white.
“Is Margaret in trouble too?” Noah asked.
“No one is in trouble for telling the truth.”
Noah swallowed. “She tried to help me.”
“When?”
“On the night I couldn't get out.”
Alexander felt the room tilt. “Couldn't get out of where?”
Victoria reached for her phone. “This is ridiculous. He's making up stories because you're home.”
“Put the phone down,” Alexander said.
She didn't.
He held Noah's gaze. “Where were you locked in?”
The boy pointed through the open doorway, past the kitchen, toward the stairs leading below the house.
“In the basement,” he whispered. “She said if I told you what happened down there, you'd send me away.”
Alexander rose slowly. “Margaret, stay with the boys.”
Victoria blocked his path. “Alex, don't.”
He looked at his wife, then at the basement door.
“Get out of my way.”
