"The Unwanted Son" Chapter 6 — The Video She Never Wanted Found
Alexander didn't touch the dead phone again until Daniel arrived.
Noah sat beside Margaret in the sunroom, working on a puzzle with the curtains open. Alexander could hear the pieces clicking together. He held on to that ordinary sound while Daniel examined the device.
“Oliver gave it to Noah voluntarily?” Daniel asked.
“Yes. Margaret witnessed it.”
“Then document exactly when and how. Don't edit anything. We should preserve the original and have a qualified examiner make a copy.”
Alexander set a charger on the desk. “I heard enough to know what she did.”
“You heard one sentence. We need the whole context, and we need to protect the children from being dragged through this more than necessary.”
The charging symbol appeared.
Alexander waited until Daniel had photographed the phone and recorded its condition. When the device restarted, they made a preliminary review while arranging professional preservation.
The first video was forty-seven seconds long.
Oliver had apparently placed the phone beside a ceramic flour jar. The camera pointed across the kitchen island. A skateboard wheel rolled briefly through the frame.
Noah stood near the refrigerator in his school sweater. He held a paper bag against his chest.
Victoria stepped into view.
“What did I tell you about asking Margaret for food?”
“I was hungry,” Noah said.
“You ate at lunch.”
“That was yesterday's sandwich.”
Alexander gripped the edge of the desk.
Victoria snatched the bag. An apple rolled across the counter.
“Your father has enough problems without your stories,” she said. “If you tell him what happened, I'll make sure he never believes another word you say.”
Noah's voice was almost inaudible. “I won't tell.”
“Good. Now go upstairs.”
The recording continued after he left. Victoria picked up her phone.
“Richard? No, he doesn't suspect anything. Alexander signs whatever Daniel puts in front of him. The boy's money is practically sitting there.”
She moved out of range before the recording ended.
Daniel paused the video.
Alexander stared at the empty kitchen.
“I left him with her,” he said.
“You believed a person who was deliberately deceiving you,” Daniel replied. “That doesn't erase your responsibility. But the useful thing now is what you do next.”
Alexander forced himself to breathe.
“Find out what she meant about his money.”
Daniel was already opening his laptop.
Emily had established a trust for Noah before her death. Alexander remembered the paperwork, the meetings, the relief of knowing her inheritance would remain available for their son.
He had left the administration to professionals because the details made him think of hospital corridors and the last time he'd held Emily's hand.
Daniel brought up the trust summary.
“The trustee is an independent trust company,” he said. “Victoria isn't authorized to direct distributions.”
“Then how could she touch it?”
“She may not have. But she could have tried to impersonate an authorized party, forge supporting documents, or persuade someone inside the process to cooperate.”

A second video appeared in the gallery, filmed two weeks after the first.
This time the camera faced the mudroom. Victoria stood with a man in a charcoal coat. Alexander recognized Richard Hayes from an old family photograph.
Richard held a folder.
“The school expense angle won't cover a transfer that size,” he said.
Victoria lowered her voice. “Then make it a medical expense. Alex won't question anything with Noah's name on it.”
“You need a trustee signature.”
“I need you to stop telling me what I need.”
Richard shut the folder. “If this blows up, I'm not going down alone.”
The video ended when Oliver picked up the phone.
Alexander looked at Daniel. “Is that enough?”
“It's evidence worth investigating. It isn't a conviction. We need account records, correspondence, and the original documents.”
Alexander wanted to call Victoria and demand answers. Instead, he handed Daniel the phone.
“Do it properly.”
That afternoon, Alexander sat with Noah in the sunroom. He didn't describe the video. Sarah Mitchell, the child psychologist Daniel had recommended, had advised him not to ask Noah to repeat painful events unnecessarily.
“Oliver gave us something important,” Alexander said. “Grown-ups are taking care of it.”
“Is Oliver in trouble?”
“No.”
“Is he going to be okay?”
“I'll make sure someone checks on him, too.”
Noah pushed a puzzle piece into place. “Victoria says people always choose their real kids.”
Alexander felt the words land harder than an accusation.
“Oliver is her son,” he said. “And you're mine. But no child deserves to be hurt. Being someone's real child doesn't make anyone else less important.”
Noah looked up. “Did you choose me?”
“Every day,” Alexander said. Then he corrected himself. “I should have shown you every day. I didn't. I'm going to change that.”
Noah leaned against him. Alexander stayed still until the boy was ready to move.
At five, Daniel called from Manhattan.
The trust company had agreed to preserve records and review recent requests. An administrator had flagged a proposed extraordinary distribution for Noah's supposed specialized medical care.
“There isn't any specialized medical care,” Alexander said.
“Exactly. The supporting documents list a clinic that can't be verified at the address provided.”
“Who submitted them?”
“A representative claiming to act under your authorization.”
“Victoria?”
“The name on the cover letter is Richard Hayes.”
Alexander stood. “Freeze everything.”
“The trustee is suspending review while it verifies the request. I've also advised them of suspected fraud. We'll report the evidence to the appropriate authorities.”
“Good.”
Daniel didn't hang up.
“Alex, there's another problem. Someone sent in a revised set of instructions about Noah's trust. They don't appear to match Emily's original documents.”
“Revised by whom?”
“We're checking. But the papers include what looks like your signature.”
Alexander looked through the glass at Noah building a crooked tower of puzzle boxes.
“I never signed anything.”
“I believe you,” Daniel said. “Now we have to prove it.”
