"The Unwanted Son" Chapter 7 — The Woman Behind the Smile
Victoria called Alexander eleven times before noon.
He let the calls go to voicemail and sent a short message through Daniel: All communications about the separation and Noah must go through counsel.
Her reply arrived thirty seconds later.
You are destroying this family over a child's imagination.
Alexander placed the phone face down.
Across the breakfast table, Noah was spreading peanut butter on toast. A little landed on his sleeve.
“Sorry,” he said instantly.
“It's a sleeve,” Alexander replied. “We can wash it.”
Noah studied him, waiting for the rest of the sentence. There wasn't one.
At school, Alexander walked Noah to the front entrance. A teacher greeted them and asked whether Noah would be staying for the afternoon art club.
“Yes,” Noah said, then glanced at his father. “If that's okay.”
“It's more than okay.”
When Noah disappeared inside, Alexander remained on the steps for a moment. He used to think the most important part of fatherhood was ensuring his son would never lack anything money could buy.
He was beginning to understand how little that covered.
Daniel met him at the Manhattan office with a stack of records.
“The purported medical clinic is a shell,” Daniel said. “The mailing address is a commercial mailbox. Its listed manager has a business connection to Richard.”
Alexander opened the first file.
“Richard told Victoria he was bankrupt.”
“His personal finances are strained. That doesn't mean he can't help run a fraudulent billing scheme.”
Daniel showed him a series of emails obtained from records voluntarily supplied by the trustee and related parties. Several were sent from an account using a variation of Alexander's company name.
One message requested expedited processing because the beneficiary allegedly needed urgent treatment.
Another attached a letter bearing Alexander's name.
“I didn't write this,” Alexander said.
“Your assistant confirmed you were in Chicago on the date shown. We're preserving the original message data and asking a forensic examiner to assess the signature.”
“Can they stop the money?”
“The trustee has put the request on hold. We're seeking additional safeguards and making a formal fraud report.”
Alexander read the amount twice. It was large enough to pay for a lifetime of school fees, therapy, and a home of Noah's own.
Victoria had complained when Noah asked for strawberries.
Now someone was trying to take money Emily had left to protect him.
“Who knew the trust existed?” Alexander asked.
“Your family, the trustee, Emily's estate attorney, and people who later saw relevant household documents. Victoria may have learned enough to exploit the process.”
Daniel turned a page.
“There's something else. Richard has a history of creating companies that bill for services never delivered. Some complaints were settled. None proves this case, but the pattern matters.”
Alexander closed the folder.
“Then we follow the documents, not her excuses.”
Meanwhile, Victoria was sitting in Richard's rented apartment in Stamford, watching her calls go unanswered.

“You told me the paperwork would work,” she snapped.
Richard paced by the window. “It would have, if you hadn't started a war with a billionaire who can afford ten lawyers.”
“He wasn't supposed to come home early.”
“You should have treated the kid decently.”
Victoria laughed without humor. “Don't pretend you care about him.”
“I care about prison.”
She snatched the folder from his hands. “We need to destroy the copies.”
“Not happening. I kept everything.”
Victoria stared at him.
“Insurance,” Richard said. “You taught me that.”
She slapped the folder onto the table.
“Then we need Noah to say he made it up.”
Richard stopped pacing. “Leave the kid alone.”
“Since when are you the moral one?”
“Since you started talking like someone who wants another charge added to the list.”
That afternoon, Victoria appeared outside Noah's school.
She wore a pale coat and carried a gift bag. To anyone watching, she looked like a concerned mother arriving with a surprise.
The school receptionist met her at the entrance.
“Mrs. Bennett, you're not on today's approved pickup list.”
“I don't need to pick him up. I only want five minutes.”
“We can't arrange that without authorization.”
Victoria's smile tightened. “He's my stepson.”
“I understand. Please contact Mr. Bennett and the school administration.”
Noah saw her through the glass doors on his way to art club. He stopped so abruptly that another child nearly bumped into him.
Victoria lifted the gift bag and mouthed his name.
Noah backed away.
His teacher knelt beside him. “You don't have to go outside. You're safe here.”
He nodded, but his hands shook.
Alexander arrived twenty minutes later after the school called him. Victoria had already left. The staff provided a written account and preserved the relevant security footage according to school policy.
Noah sat in the counselor's office, staring at a drawing of a lighthouse.
“Did I get her in trouble?” he asked when Alexander entered.
“No. Adults are responsible for their own choices.”
“She had a present.”
“You never have to accept a present to make someone stop being angry.”
Noah slid off the chair and took his father's hand.
On the drive home, he asked whether Victoria would come back.
“Not to see you without permission,” Alexander said. “The school knows. Margaret knows. I know.”
“Okay.”
At the house, Margaret had made chicken soup. Noah ate at the dining table while Alexander answered one last call from Daniel.
“We've filed the report,” Daniel said. “The trustee is cooperating. Richard may be willing to speak, but we can't count on him.”
“Is Victoria still denying everything?”
“She sent me a message claiming Emily concealed information about the trust. I don't know whether it's a bluff.”
Alexander remembered the pink note and its reference to a special place.
“Emily's estate attorney kept an archive in the Hamptons,” he said. “There may be original papers there.”
“Then let's review them lawfully and carefully.”
A new message flashed across Alexander's phone. It was from Victoria.
You think Emily was so innocent? Ask Daniel what she left behind.
Below it was a photograph of a locked wooden cabinet in the Hamptons house.
Alexander recognized the cabinet. Emily had kept it in the upstairs sitting room.
The picture was recent.
And Victoria had no reason to be inside that house.
