"The Unwanted Son" Chapter 10 — A Father's Promise
Alexander did not go after Victoria.
Every instinct told him to chase the SUV, demand answers, make her look him in the eye. Daniel stopped him beside the country club's service entrance.
“If you confront her, you could complicate the investigation,” the lawyer said. “Let the evidence do its work.”
Alexander stared at the empty driveway.
“She's had years to make Noah afraid. I don't want her to have one more hour.”
“She won't have access to him tonight. We've already documented the protective arrangements.”
Alexander called Margaret before getting into his car.
“How is he?”
“Building a spaceship. Oliver just left with Caroline.”
“Did Noah see anything?”
“No. We kept the television off.”
Alexander exhaled.
“Tell him I'm coming home.”
“He's waiting for you.”
At Richard's apartment in Stamford, Victoria found the front door unlocked and two cardboard boxes in the hall.
Richard stood by the kitchen counter, his laptop open.
“Where are the account statements?” she demanded.
“With my attorney.”
She stopped.
“What did you do?”
“I told them what happened.”
“You told them what you wanted them to believe.”
Richard shut the laptop.
“I gave them the messages. The invoices. The bank instructions. All of it.”
Victoria's voice rose.
“You signed those papers too!”
“I know. My lawyer says I may face charges. But I'm done helping you take money from a kid.”
She reached for his phone. He pulled it away.
“You don't get to pretend you're innocent,” she hissed.
“I'm not.”
That answer silenced her for a moment.
Richard looked at the boxes.
“Take your things. Don't come back.”
Victoria stepped into the hallway, where her phone lit up with a message from her own attorney: Do not contact Alexander, Noah, or any witnesses. Call me immediately.
She deleted the notification without replying.
The following morning, Daniel met Alexander at the Manhattan office with an update. The trustee had rejected the disputed transfer request, preserved the records, and flagged additional accounts for review. Investigators had obtained banking records through appropriate legal process.
“The second account?” Alexander asked.
“Linked to a shell company. Richard's statements appear to match some of the transaction history, but investigators are still tracing the money.”
“Will they arrest her?”
“That's not our decision.”
Alexander pushed back from the table.
“I'm tired of hearing what isn't our decision.”
Daniel closed his folder.
“Then focus on what is. Noah's safety. Your cooperation. The fact that you can be home when he wakes up.”
Alexander looked at the family photograph on his desk. It showed Noah at five, standing stiffly between two adults. Alexander had been on his way to an airport. Victoria was smiling.
He turned the frame facedown.
That afternoon, Alexander met with Dr. Sarah Mitchell, a child psychologist recommended by Noah's pediatrician. He came alone first to discuss how to introduce support without making Noah feel interrogated.
“Children who've been frightened at home often expect punishment even after the danger has passed,” she said. “Predictability matters. So does allowing him to make small choices.”

“What if he doesn't want to talk?”
“Then don't force him. You can still listen.”
Alexander rubbed his palms together.
“I didn't listen when it mattered.”
“You can be accountable without making him responsible for comforting you.”
He wrote that sentence down.
At home, Noah sat at the kitchen island while Margaret showed him how to measure flour for pancakes. A streak of batter ran across his sleeve.
“Dad!” he called when Alexander entered. “We're making breakfast for dinner.”
“Excellent idea.”
Noah hesitated.
“Is it okay if I make a mess?”
Alexander took off his jacket and rolled up his sleeves.
“Only if you let me make a bigger one.”
Margaret handed him a whisk.
He promptly splashed batter across the counter. Noah burst out laughing.
For a moment, the house sounded like a home instead of a museum.
The next days were not simple. Noah woke from a nightmare on Tuesday and refused to go near the basement door on Wednesday. On Thursday he asked whether Victoria could still send someone to take him away.
Alexander sat beside his bed.
“No. The adults are making sure you're safe.”
“Promise?”
“I promise to keep showing up and doing everything I can to protect you.”
Noah held out his little finger. Alexander hooked it with his own.
On Friday morning, Daniel called while Alexander was packing Noah's lunch.
“Victoria was taken into custody this morning,” he said. “Authorities have announced charges related to alleged financial fraud and falsified documents. There will be a court process. She's presumed innocent unless proven guilty.”
Alexander closed his eyes.
“Was she at the bank?”
“She was detained after investigators followed up on the accounts. I don't have every detail yet.”
“Does Noah need to know?”
“Not from the news. Talk with Sarah about what to tell him, and keep it age-appropriate.”
Alexander put the phone down. He felt relief, then anger, then a grief he couldn't name. An arrest could not give Noah back his lost birthdays or nights spent afraid.
He went to the kitchen. Noah was drawing a rocket on his lunch bag.
“Is everything okay?” the boy asked.
“Some adults are dealing with Victoria's choices,” Alexander said. “You don't have to fix any of it. You're safe here with me.”
“Is she coming back?”
“Not to live here. And we won't let her visit you without the right safeguards.”
Noah considered that.
“Can I still talk to Oliver?”
“If you both want to, we'll work it out with Caroline.”
“Good. He knows how to beat the moon level.”
Alexander smiled. “Then we can't lose our space expert.”
Later that month, Alexander filed for divorce and worked with counsel to address the family and financial matters. Margaret gave her statement. School records and the video were preserved. No one asked Noah to perform his pain for a courtroom audience.
Alexander changed his schedule. He started taking Noah to school, arriving early enough to stand with the other parents at pickup. He burned grilled cheese sandwiches, learned which dinosaur Noah liked best, and kept a calendar on the refrigerator with the days he'd be home marked in blue.
One night, after reading the same chapter of a space book twice, he tucked the blanket beneath Noah's chin.
“Dad?”
“Yeah, buddy?”
“If you get married again someday… will I have to eat alone?”
Alexander felt the question like a hand closing around his heart.
He sat on the edge of the bed.
“Noah, listen to me. You are my son. Nothing anyone does, and no one I ever meet, can change that. You belong at our table. Always.”
Noah searched his face.
“Even when I do something wrong?”
“Even then.”
“Even when you're mad?”
“Especially then. We can be upset with each other and still love each other.”
Noah slid his hand into Alexander's.
“Can you stay until I fall asleep?”
Alexander looked at the unread emails on his phone, turned it facedown, and pulled a chair beside the bed.
“I'm not going anywhere.”
