"My Daughter Was Eating Beside the Trash" Chapter 4 — My Wife's Death Was No Accident
Nathan had spent four years avoiding Sheridan Road.
It was the stretch of pavement where Claire's car had left the roadway during a cold November storm. The police report called it a loss of control on a wet curve. Nathan had signed papers, buried his wife, and tried to keep breathing for Emma.
Now he drove there with Daniel beside him.
“Carter asked you not to investigate on your own,” Daniel reminded him.
“I'm not collecting evidence. I needed to see it.”
The road curved past dark trees and expensive houses set far back behind stone walls. Nathan parked in a legal turnout and stared through the windshield.
Claire had called him less than an hour before she died.
He remembered letting the call go to voicemail because he was presenting quarterly numbers to investors.
When he called back, a police officer answered her phone.
“I should have picked up,” he said.
Daniel didn't offer an easy answer. “You couldn't have known.”
Nathan rubbed his eyes. “She was trying to tell me something.”
“Then help the detectives find out what.”
Nathan's office occupied the top floors of a glass building overlooking the Chicago River. He had spent years believing that every problem could be solved with enough preparation. The office now seemed full of reminders that he had prepared for the wrong emergencies.
His chief financial officer brought a list of vendors from the year Claire died. Several companies had been dissolved soon afterward. One shared a mailing address with a consulting business Richard had once recommended.
Nathan handed the records to Daniel instead of contacting Richard. “I want every legitimate question answered,” he said. “I don't want him warned by my temper.”
Daniel nodded. “We'll preserve the records and cooperate with Carter. Financial fraud and a suspicious death are different investigations, even if they intersect.”
Nathan looked at the photograph of Emma on his desk. It showed her at five, smiling with a missing front tooth. Victoria had taken the picture. Nathan wondered what had happened immediately before and after the shutter clicked.
He turned the frame toward him and called his assistant. “No more business trips until I say otherwise.”
“Understood.”
“And I need the school calendar. Every event, every conference, every day Emma has something important.”
Leah said she would send it within the hour.
They returned to Chicago, where Carter had arranged a formal meeting with a collision reconstruction specialist. The original investigation had focused on weather, speed, and a single-car crash.
The specialist explained that the remaining records were incomplete. Photographs showed damage to the vehicle, but a maintenance invoice dated shortly before the collision had never been compared with the mechanical findings.
“What does that mean?” Nathan asked.
“It means we have questions,” Carter said. “Not answers yet.”
Daniel leaned forward. “Can you locate the vehicle?”
“We're tracing the disposal record. We also have a warrant request in progress for records connected to the repair shop.”

Nathan nodded. He had promised himself he would not confuse anger with proof.
At home, Emma sat at the kitchen island drawing a house with a yellow sun above it. Sarah Mitchell had helped arrange a few days away from school while Emma saw a pediatrician and a child therapist.
The doctor had documented concerns consistent with neglect and recommended follow-up care. Nathan had been present for the appointment but had allowed the professionals to lead.
“Is that our house?” he asked.
Emma shook her head. “It's a new one. With a window in my room that opens.”
He crouched beside her. “You can have a window that opens.”
“And no little room with a lock?”
“No room where anyone can lock you in.”
She drew another window.
Nathan's phone rang. Daniel had forwarded a copy of an old calendar invitation found among Claire's archived emails. It was addressed to a private attorney and scheduled for the morning after the crash.
The subject line read: Urgent — Contractor Payments and Family Trust.
Nathan stared at the words.
Claire had been preparing to meet someone who could help. She had never reached that appointment.
He called the attorney's office. The woman who answered confirmed that archived records existed but said they could only be released through appropriate legal procedures.
Nathan gave the information to Carter.
That evening, Margaret Collins asked to visit. Nathan nearly refused, then agreed to speak with her alone on the porch.
Margaret arrived without jewelry or makeup. She looked older than she had at the dinner.
“I knew Victoria was cruel,” she said. “I heard the way she talked about Emma. I told myself it wasn't my place.”
“You watched my daughter go hungry.”
Margaret nodded, crying. “I did. And I was wrong.”
“Did you know Richard was locking her up?”
“No. But I saw Emma flinch when he entered a room. I should have asked.”
Nathan kept his voice level. “If you remember anything specific, tell Detective Carter. Don't come here expecting me to make you feel better.”
“I understand.”
As she turned to leave, Margaret hesitated.
“Claire didn't like Richard,” she said. “At a holiday party, months before she died, I heard her tell Victoria to keep him away from Emma.”
Nathan looked up. “Victoria knew Claire?”
“They met through a charity committee. I assumed you knew.”
Nathan hadn't known. Victoria had told him they met for the first time at a fundraiser two years after Claire's funeral.
Another lie.
The next morning, Carter called with news. Investigators had found a witness who remembered Richard visiting the repair shop used by Claire shortly before her death. They were checking the account against surviving records.
“We're also looking at financial connections,” Carter said. “Don't confront either suspect.”
Nathan agreed.
Victoria called an hour later.
“You're making a terrible mistake,” she said without greeting him.
“Then tell your attorney.”

“You think Richard hurt Claire? You have no idea how complicated things were.”
Nathan stood at the window overlooking the lawn. “What things?”
She went silent.
“Victoria?”
“I won't discuss my marriage over the phone.”
“You mean your marriage to me. Claire was my wife.”
“Stop acting like she was a saint.”
Nathan felt a flash of rage. “Do not speak about her again.”
Victoria hung up.
He saved the call log and told Carter about the conversation.
Later, Emma's therapist suggested that Nathan give his daughter space to share memories naturally, without leading questions. He followed that advice. They spent the afternoon making a cardboard castle for her doll.
Emma insisted the castle needed two doors.
“One for people to come in,” she explained, “and one for when you need to get away.”
Nathan cut the second doorway carefully.
As they worked, Emma looked at the doll's blue dress.
“Mommy wore blue the night the loud people came.”
Nathan stopped cutting. “You remember that night?”
“A little.”
He kept his voice gentle. “You don't have to tell me anything now.”
Emma placed the doll inside the castle.
“Uncle Richard was shouting. Mommy said to leave us alone.”
Nathan listened without asking her to guess or fill in missing pieces.
“Then someone else came,” Emma said.
He waited.
“I remember the shoes. They clicked on the floor. Mommy was scared.”
Nathan felt the cold of Sheridan Road return to him.
“Do you know who it was?” he asked softly, then regretted the question. He didn't want to shape her memory.
Emma looked up, surprised that he needed to ask.
“Victoria was there that night, Daddy.”
Nathan stared at his daughter.
Victoria had sworn she never met Claire.
Emma had just placed her in the house hours before Claire died.
He reached for his phone to tell Detective Carter, knowing the child's memory would need careful, independent assessment.
Before he could dial, a message arrived from Daniel.
I found something in Claire's old corporate files. Victoria's name appears on a payment authorization dated three days before the crash.
Nathan read it twice.
The woman who had married him after Claire's death had been connected to Claire's last investigation all along.
