"My Daughter Was Eating Beside the Trash" Chapter 5 — The Woman Who Stole My Family
The signature at the bottom of the payment authorization belonged to a woman Nathan Whitmore had married two years after burying his first wife.
VICTORIA HAYES.
Not Whitmore. Hayes.
Three days before Claire's fatal crash, someone using Victoria's maiden name had approved a payment of eighty-six thousand dollars to a consulting firm that did not exist.
Nathan sat in Daniel Brooks's office with the paper spread between them. Chicago traffic moved far below the windows, indifferent to the way his life was coming apart.
“Tell me this could be another Victoria Hayes,” Nathan said.
“I checked the address, date of birth, and account records. It's her.”
“She told me she never met Claire.”
“Then she lied.”
Daniel turned his laptop around. A photograph showed Victoria at a charity dinner five years earlier. She stood beside Richard and a smiling executive from Whitmore Development.
“Richard brought her into the company's vendor network,” Daniel said. “He didn't have authority to approve these transfers alone. Someone inside accounting helped.”
Nathan studied the picture. Victoria looked younger, but her smile was familiar: the same polished expression she'd worn when promising to love Emma like her own daughter.
“Claire knew?”
“She was tracing the payments. That's what her video suggests.”
Nathan pushed his chair back. “And Victoria knew Claire was tracing them.”
“Possibly. We need records, not conclusions. Carter has copies of everything we've recovered.”
Nathan wanted to break something. Instead he called home.
Emma answered on the second ring.
“Daddy, Mrs. Collins made pancakes shaped like stars.”
“Did you eat three?”
“Four. One was little.”
He closed his eyes. His daughter sounded happy, and that made the evidence on Daniel's desk harder to bear.
“I'm coming home soon,” he said.
“You promised we'd build the castle roof.”
“I remember.”
When the call ended, Daniel waited until Nathan looked up.
“There's something else. Victoria contacted my office this morning. She wants access to the house and a substantial temporary support payment.”
“She can speak through her attorney.”
“She also claims you've isolated Emma from her.”
Nathan gave a humorless laugh. “She starved my child.”
“Which is why we're documenting every incident. Don't give her a reason to turn your anger into her defense.”
Before signing, he read the first page twice. Three years earlier, Victoria had stood beside him at a lakeside ceremony and promised they would be a family.
Emma had carried the rings in a velvet pouch. She had asked whether Victoria would read bedtime stories like Claire once had.
Victoria had bent down and kissed her forehead.
“Every night you want,” she'd said.
Nathan remembered feeling grateful that someone had chosen them both.
He put his pen to the page. Gratitude had blinded him, but it would not excuse him now.
Nathan signed the paperwork for divorce proceedings and authorized a forensic review of the company accounts. He asked Daniel to seek appropriate court orders protecting Emma and preserving records.

Then he drove to the house where Claire had once lived.
Emma was at the kitchen island, dusted with flour. Margaret Collins stood beside her, holding a bowl of strawberries.
“Daddy!” Emma ran to him.
He caught her and lifted her high enough to make her laugh.
“You smell like pancakes.”
“You smell like outside.”
“Fair.”
Margaret watched them with red-rimmed eyes. She had been among the guests at the disastrous dinner. She had seen enough to suspect something was wrong and had done nothing.
“I need to tell you something,” she said after Emma returned to her strawberries.
Nathan followed her into the hall.
“Victoria used to send Emma away before family dinners. She said the girl was difficult. I saw her standing outside the dining room once.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“I thought it was a disagreement over discipline. That's what I told myself.”
Nathan looked toward the kitchen. “She was seven.”
“I know.” Margaret swallowed. “I should have asked her what was happening.”
“Then help her now. Tell Carter everything you remember. Even the parts that make you look bad.”
“I will.”
That evening, Nathan carried the cardboard castle to Emma's bedroom. Its roof was still unfinished. He sat cross-legged on the carpet while Emma carefully glued paper shingles in place.
“Victoria said Mommy didn't want me,” Emma murmured.
Nathan's hand froze.
“She said Mommy went away because I cried too much.”
“Emma, look at me.”
She kept working, but her fingers trembled.
“Your mother loved you. Nothing you did made her leave. Nothing.”
“Then why did Victoria say it?”
“Because she wanted you to believe something cruel. That doesn't make it true.”
Emma finally looked up. “Did you believe her?”
Nathan felt the question land where no accusation could have hurt more.
“I believed too many things without checking,” he said. “I was wrong. I'm going to listen better.”
She moved closer and pressed the doll into his palm.
“Mommy used to put her here when I had bad dreams.”
Nathan placed the doll beside the castle's second door.
His phone vibrated. Daniel had sent another file: a spreadsheet showing payments routed from Whitmore Development into three shell companies. One was linked to Richard. Another led to Victoria.
The third carried an unfamiliar name.
Nathan forwarded it to Carter and called Daniel.
“Who owns the third company?”
“We're working on it. But the transfers didn't stop when Claire died.”
Nathan stared at the dates. Payments had continued throughout his marriage to Victoria.
She hadn't merely entered his life after the tragedy. She had kept the scheme alive under his roof.
The next afternoon, Victoria arrived with her attorney to retrieve agreed-upon personal belongings. A security guard and a neutral property supervisor accompanied them.
She stepped into the foyer in a cream coat and diamond earrings, looking every inch the injured wife.
“Nathan. Are we really doing this?”
“We're doing exactly what the lawyers arranged.”
Her gaze traveled toward the staircase. “Where's Emma?”
“Somewhere you won't be speaking to her today.”
Victoria smiled thinly. “You can't erase three years of marriage because a child told stories.”
“I have the photographs. The notebook. The financial records.”
For the first time, her expression flickered.
“What financial records?”
Nathan said nothing.
Victoria stepped closer, lowering her voice. “Claire wasn't as innocent as you think.”
He held her gaze. “You told me you never knew her.”
A long silence followed.
Her attorney touched her elbow. “Victoria. Don't.”
But Victoria was staring at Nathan with naked calculation now.
“You think taking my ring and my house means you've won?”
“I think my daughter is finally safe.”
Victoria leaned close enough that only he could hear.
“You have no idea what I've already taken from your daughter.”
Nathan did not move. He waited until she walked away, then wrote down her exact words and the time.
When Daniel answered his call, Nathan repeated them.
“Find out what she meant,” he said.
Daniel's response came after a pause.
“Nathan, I was going to tell you tomorrow. Claire established a trust for Emma before she died.”
“I know. I've funded it for years.”
“You know about the account. You don't know about the amendment someone filed last month.”
Nathan gripped the phone.
“What amendment?”
“The one that names Victoria as a potential successor trustee.”
