"The Little Girl Who Borrowed a Mafia Boss" Chapter 4
The Woman Who Stayed
Alessandro caught the hospital bracelet before it slipped from the table.
He held it across his palm. The plastic was so small that Maria could scarcely reconcile it with the child turning pages in the next room.
"She was that little?" he asked.
Maria nodded. "She weighed six pounds and four ounces. She had a lot of hair."
He looked toward the doorway.
"And Elena told you I didn't want her."
"She showed me your message. She played a recording."
"I never knew she was pregnant."
The certainty in his voice made Maria grip the chair. She had expected anger, a denial of paternity, perhaps a demand that she leave. She had not prepared for those seven words.
"She said you knew."
"Find the recording."
Maria retrieved her old phone from a drawer. Its case was cracked. She kept it because Sophia's baby pictures were on it, and because she had never been able to throw away the messages that explained why their life had become what it was.
While it charged, Alessandro turned to Marco.
"Did you know?"
"I knew she'd had a baby. Elena told me the father was a man she'd met after you. I drove her here once before the birth. She said Maria would help her."
"Yesterday, you looked at Sophia as though you recognized her."
"I recognized Elena in her face. I wondered about the rest. I should have come to you last night."
Alessandro watched him for a long moment.
"Yes, you should have."
Marco accepted it. Maria was grateful he did not offer another promise to explain the silence.
The old phone lit up. She found the saved voice message and pressed play.
Alessandro's younger voice filled the kitchen.
I don't want her here. Make sure she understands that.
Silence followed.
"Play it again," he said.
Maria obeyed. He listened with his head lowered, his thumb resting on the tiny bracelet.
"That was about a woman Elena brought to a private dinner," he said. "A photographer who sold pictures of my nephew outside his school. Elena wanted me to give her access to a family event. We argued about it."
Maria stared at the screen.
"She sent me that two days after Sophia was born."
"It wasn't about a child, Maria. It was never about a child."
She sat down too quickly. The chair struck the wall.
For years she had built her days around an absence she believed was deliberate. She had told herself anger was useless, that children could survive without fathers, that being wanted by one person was enough.
Now the man beside her looked as though someone had opened a wound he had not known he carried.
"I should have asked you," she whispered.
"You were afraid of me."
"I still should have asked."
His eyes moved to the doorway again.
"I wish you had."

He did not absolve her, and she trusted the answer more because of it.
Sophia appeared carrying a book upside down. Alessandro put the bracelet in the box before she reached them.
"I chose the bear one," she said.
"That's a good choice," Maria managed.
Sophia studied her face. "Does your head hurt again?"
Maria touched her cheek. "I'm having a difficult minute. It will pass."
The child climbed into her lap and pressed their foreheads together. It was what Maria did when checking for fever. Alessandro watched without speaking.
"You can have my rabbit," Sophia offered.
Maria's throat closed.
"Thank you, my love."
Rosa returned after Marco called her. She took Sophia into the bedroom to wash the day's ice cream from her hands, closing the door with the instinctive understanding of a woman who had shared every difficult year.
Alessandro moved to the window.
"We should confirm the relationship," he said. "Privately. I won't put her through anything frightening."
Maria nodded. "A cheek swab is all right. I want to explain it to her first."
"Then you will."
She looked at his reflection. "What happens afterward?"
"If she's mine, I'll be her father."
The room seemed to tilt.
"Please don't take her away from me."
The words escaped before she could arrange them more proudly. She stood, then could not remember why.
"I know you can give her things I can't. I know this apartment is small. I know I haven't done everything right, but I know how she likes the blanket tucked under her feet, and she won't tell you if her shoes pinch because she thinks new ones cost too much. When she has a nightmare, she needs to see the door open. Please don't make her wake up somewhere I can't reach her."
Alessandro came toward her. Maria stepped back until the table stopped her.
He halted immediately.
"Look at me."
She tried. Tears blurred his face, and she wiped them away angrily.
"You are her mother," he said. "Whatever that test says, it won't change who she reaches for. I won't punish her for loving you."
Maria covered her mouth.
He drew a chair close enough that they could sit facing each other.
"I will have questions," he continued. "Some days I'll be angry about what I missed. I'm angry now. But you fed her. You held her. You gave her a home when I didn't even know there was a child who needed one. I can be angry about the lost time without taking her from the person who made it bearable."
She pressed her palms against her knees until the shaking eased.
"She walked for strawberries," she said suddenly.
He leaned forward.
"Her first steps. Rosa put a bowl on the table, and Sophia let go of the sofa. I was so surprised I forgot to take a picture."
Alessandro let out a breath that caught halfway.
"How old was she?"
"Eleven months. She fell on her bottom and kept the strawberry."
His mouth bent. His eyes did not.
"That sounds like her."
Maria found the video from the following afternoon. Her own laughter came from the old phone, younger and exhausted. On the screen a small child crossed a rug on uncertain feet.
Alessandro watched it twice.
When he handed back the phone, his finger lingered against hers. Neither moved for a moment.
That evening, they agreed Maria and Sophia would stay in the east guest suite at the mansion until they knew why Luca had entered the apartment. Rosa would come too. Maria insisted on packing herself. Alessandro waited downstairs, and for once waiting appeared to cost him effort.
Before they left, Marco showed Maria and Alessandro a photograph on his phone.
It came from a society event in Palm Beach, dated six weeks earlier. Elena stood beneath a white awning, diamonds at her throat, smiling beside a man old enough to be her father.
Maria recognized the necklace. Not the silver one in the box. Something larger, brighter, wholly unfamiliar.
"She used the name Elena Vale," Marco said. "The man is Richard Vale. They're no longer together."
Maria stared at the date.
For six weeks she had been choosing between fixing the refrigerator and replacing Sophia's shoes. Elena had been standing under an awning in diamonds.
Alessandro took the phone, then set it facedown.
"Find out where she is now."
