"The Little Girl Who Borrowed a Mafia Boss" Chapter 9
The Only Mother She Knew
Sophia had made a picture of the three of them.
She held it against her chest when they entered the sitting room, suddenly shy about her own work. Maria knelt, grateful for a task as simple as looking.
"Tell me about it, sweetheart."
"That's you, and that's me, and that's Daddy."
Maria felt Alessandro stop beside her.
Sophia had used his name until now. She did not seem to understand what she had changed. She was busy pointing out that she had remembered Maria's earrings even though Maria rarely wore them.
Alessandro lowered himself to the carpet.
"May I keep that?"
"You can put it by your work. Then you can come back when you look at it."
His throat moved.
"I don't need a picture to remember to come back. But I'd like one anyway."
Sophia put it in his hands. Then she climbed into Maria's lap and asked why her eyes were red.
"I was sad about something," Maria said. "I feel better now."
"Did Daddy help?"
Maria looked at him.
"He did."
They postponed Elena's next visit. Alessandro told her there were questions she would have to answer before another meeting with Sophia. He did not send her the documents. Maria wanted time to decide how to speak to the child, and he gave her that time.
For two days, the house seemed to exhale.
Maria drew at the breakfast table while Sophia colored beside her. Alessandro came home before dinner. On the second night, he kissed Maria near the kitchen door, a brief kiss that became less brief when she caught his sleeve.
"You're getting bold," she whispered.
"I've had encouragement."
She smiled against his mouth, and for once no fear followed immediately afterward.
The next afternoon, Elena arrived during a staff delivery.
Maria was in the sunroom sorting Sophia's clothes into drawers when Mrs. Bell came quickly down the corridor.
"She's in the front hall. Security is calling Mr. Moretti."
Maria stood. "Where is Sophia?"
"With Rosa in the garden. I've asked them to come through the kitchen."
Maria met Elena near the staircase. A guard stood several feet away, speaking quietly into his radio.
Elena wore dark glasses and carried a child's pink coat.
"I'd like a moment with my daughter."
"Alessandro told you we need to speak first."
"I don't need permission from a maid to see the child I gave birth to."
Maria felt the insult, then felt something steadier beneath it.
"You need to stop arriving without an agreement. She's confused enough."
Elena removed her glasses.
"You really think you can keep both of them?"
"This isn't a competition."
"That's easy to say when you're winning."
Footsteps sounded beyond the side door. Rosa appeared with Sophia, saw Elena, and stopped.
Sophia carried a little watering can. Her sleeve was damp.
"Mommy, we found a worm."
Elena moved before Maria could reach them.

"Darling, I've come to take you shopping. We can get some proper clothes."
Sophia looked at the coat.
"I'm watering flowers."
"You can do that later. Come and try this on."
Elena reached for her arm. Sophia stepped back against Rosa.
Maria crossed the hall.
"She said she doesn't want to go."
"She doesn't know me because you made sure she wouldn't."
Elena's voice rose. Sophia's eyes widened.
"You had almost four years to introduce yourself," Maria said. "Don't frighten her because you don't like what that time has changed."
The guard moved closer. Elena saw him and changed her voice, making it softer.
"Sophia, sweet girl, you don't understand. Maria isn't your real mother. I'm your mommy. You belong with me."
Sophia looked from Elena to Maria. Her mouth opened, but no words came.
Maria saw the precise moment fear took hold: the watering can lowered, the little fingers tightened, the gaze searching for the familiar face that would tell her the world still worked.
"Come here, sweetheart," Maria said.
Elena caught Sophia's wrist.
The watering can struck the floor.
"We're going to have a conversation without you interrupting," Elena snapped.
Sophia began to cry.
Maria did not remember deciding to move. She was simply there, her hand between Elena's fingers and the child's skin.
"Let go of her."
"Don't put your hands on me."
"Then release my daughter."
Rosa lifted Sophia from behind as the guard stepped between the women. Elena lost her grip. Sophia twisted toward Maria, sobbing so hard she could not catch a breath.
Maria took her and moved away from the stairs.
"I've got you. Your arm is free. Breathe with me, my love."
Sophia clung to her neck.
"I want my mommy. I want Maria."
The words were muffled against her shoulder, but everyone heard them.
Elena stood beside the fallen can, her face rigid.
"Look what you've done to her. She doesn't even know who she is."
Maria turned, holding the child's head against her.
"She knows exactly where she feels safe."
The front door opened behind Elena.
Alessandro entered with Marco. He took in the guard, the pink coat, the water spreading across the marble. Then he heard Sophia crying.
His face emptied of everything Maria knew from breakfast.
He came to them first.
"What happened?"
Maria told him in three sentences. Her voice sounded distant to her own ears.
He touched Sophia's back.
"You're staying with Mommy," he said. "Nobody is taking you anywhere."
Sophia lifted her wet face.
"She said she's my mommy."
His eyes met Maria's above the child's head.
"Maria is your mommy. You don't have to call anyone else that."
Sophia pressed her face back into Maria's shoulder.
He turned to Rosa. "Please go upstairs with them."
Elena started forward. Marco blocked her path.
"I want to speak to my daughter."
Alessandro looked at her. Maria had seen dangerous men obey that look. Until now she had never understood what it felt like to stand inside its protection.
"You have spoken enough for today."
Upstairs, Sophia would not let Maria sit her on the bed. They settled in the armchair instead, shoes and all. Rosa brought water and a damp cloth. Maria checked the small wrist; there was no swelling, only a faint red mark that faded as she watched.
She kissed it anyway.
"Did I make her angry?" Sophia whispered.
"Her feelings were hers to handle. You didn't do anything wrong."
"Can I still have you?"
Maria bent over her so the answer could not be mistaken.
"You have me. Today, tomorrow, when you're big enough to reach every shelf in this house. You never have to ask for me back."
Sophia cried again, more quietly this time. Maria rocked her, feeling each small shudder ease.
When Alessandro came upstairs an hour later, the child was asleep against her chest. He knelt beside the chair and laid one hand over Maria's.
She looked at him with an exhaustion she could no longer conceal.
"I won't let her come into Sophia's life like this again," he said.
Maria nodded.
Only then did she realize she believed him.
